The macabre humor and Gothic settings characterized many cartoons, first apparent in the New Yorker, of known American cartoonist Charles Samuel Addams.
Chas Addams best created "The Addams Family" comic characters, adapted for a variety of media. His signature style involved single panels.
A "mysterious and spooky," yet "neat, sweet"" and highly entertaining, collection of cartoons by Charles Addams. It's a unique kind of dark, dry comedy where the scary and paranormal are highlighted in a funny way (a style that was accurately replicated in the hit 1960's TV show "The Addams Family" which was inspired by these cartoons).
Even darker than expected. Still mostly timeless, although a few gags don't work in 2014 and a couple are borderline racist given a half-century of societal growth.
A great anthology. Not only do you get bits of the Addams family which inspired the eponymous TV series, but many other random in cartoons as well. They are delightfully bizarre and wondrous. Some don’t age well, but over all a delight to read.
Nightcrawlers by Charles Addams is a delightful graphic novel brimming with humor and charm. As my first read of the year, it proved to be an enjoyable ride with captivating graphics that made me wish the book never ended. Addams’ unique blend of humor and satire sets it apart, though some elements felt too Western for me to fully grasp. Despite this, the clever wit and entertaining illustrations kept me engaged throughout. While it differs from other graphic novels I’ve read, its charm lies in its originality and artistry. A great start to the year, I rate it 4 stars.
This has been on my shelf for a long time and I'm sure I've read these single panel cartoons before, but just never marked it on GR. Uh, no rating. A lot still hold up and the cutely creepy vibes set a precedent that spawned a tv show and several movies, but there are a few pretty shockingly racist/xenophobic panels in here. I mean, product of its time blah blah but . . . yikes. Those aged like milk.
Rating is for this edition - way way too small a printing. Can't read most of the jokes - as in, his images were not meant to be printed to tiny. Love the book - but skip this one and go straight to a larger edition.
I’m a huge huge fan of the Addams Family. While I would have appreciated more comics of them in this book, the other odd random ones are quite enjoyable
