Melinda Metz grew up in San Jose, California. People sometimes ask if she knows the way there. She kinda does, but she has an off-kilter sense of direction, so to be confident of arriving, it's better to consult some kind of navigational device.

Her mother tried to teach her to read in kindergarten, but Melinda had no interest. She also had no interest in learning to write her name. (FYI, when Melinda was in kindergarten it was all about finger-painting, play time, and naps.) Eventually, she mastered both and even majored in English at San Jose State University.

After college, Melinda moved to Manhattan to seek her fortune, which involved learning to identify fruits and vegetables while working at a grocery store,
making $2.73 working backstage for an off-off Broadway play (her part of the box-office profits), and editing books.

Melinda and the lovely and talented Laura J. Burns pretty much became unofficial writing partners when they were editors at the same company. They teamed up to brainstorm story ideas, and at some point their brains fused in some key places. Later they worked on the Roswell High book series, Laura developing and editing the series, Melinda writing.

That series led to Melinda and Laura, now an official writing team, writing two TV pilots, moving to L.A. to work on the Roswell TV show, and briefly living in Toronto while on the writing staff of 1-800-Missing. They both continue to write books, together and separately.

Laura and Melinda's new book, Sanctuary Bay, a YA thriller, is coming out in January 2016. It's set at an ultra-exclusive private school on an island. Once a student is accepted to the school, they must stay until graduation. No visits home, no contact with the outside world at all. Find out why in January!

The first four books in Melinda's new middle-grade mystery series,S.M.A.R.T.S., are out now. The books involve a group of kids in a makerspace club and they all have lots of science info. For all the cool geeks out there!

Melinda lives in Concord, NC with her dog, Scully (yes, she loves the woo-woo so much she named her dog after a kickass X-Files character). She has never regretted learning to read and write her name.

Ok, this book was pretty awful. I felt from the beginning that it might be that way but I wanted to give the book a fair chance, as some start off slow and then they improve. But this one only grew worse and worse as the pages went by.

For one most of the characters seem to go insane for no reason. Insane and violent. It really bugged me. Other authors seem to handle that sort of thing ok, where it makes sense to the storyline, but in here I only found it very annoying. Maybe too many things were just happening out of the blue. Too much too fast. Or maybe it was something to do with how the characters were written? I don't know but I didn't like it.

I also really hated the one character that was torturing animals! No, I'm not going to read that.

Another big problem is I didn't care about the characters at all. And it's certainly not their age because I read lots of teen books...I think it's the writing style. Maybe the characters had too many problems? One had an eating disorder and had killed his friend years ago, one boy was in a coma, one was seeing visions...it's just that they all seemed to have major issues. Then when you throw in the other stuff...the ability to control animals, etc...I guess it was just too weird?

There also didn't seem to actually be a main character. The viewpoint kept switching from one character to another..

I did enjoy the short diary entries from 1702 that were in here. That writing captured my imagination. But it was too little too late. And it was just a tiny fraction of the story.

This book isn't for me.

Raven's Point is a decent book for those into the horror genre. It's not perfect (it sometimes prolongs in something I consider trivial and then rushes in something I consider important) but it manages to draw one's attention until the last page and stay loyal to the story. I found it scary in The Crazies kind of scary with a blend of Ghost Whisperer (the not-childish episodes). I had a few problems with the main characters but their good points even out the bad points.

Jane, Tavia, and Seth have been experiencing pretty strange and unbelievable stuff. Jane has been seeing visions of the past. Tavia can communicate with animals. Seth is being haunted by ghosts. They don't understand what's happening to them, but they know they have to figure it out soon. Their town is being stricken with madness and the only way to stop the being behind it is to use their powers to defeat it.

So, this was my second time reading it and oh boy... so many details are so specifically a certain time period that it was a real throwback read. The writing is fairly juvenile, but I think it suits the characters you explore the events through and is about style versus ability. However, there were aspects of the pacing that I didn't enjoy so much this time around, but that was never really what drew me in and made this book so memorable to be after the first read. What drew me then was how CREEPY it could be and very often this book still gave me the creeps. So, maybe it's not as creepy as I remembered it, but I liked the trip down memory lane and still got my creep show.

Terrible book by an author whose other books I loved. It didn't even seem like it was written by the same author. Strange, confusing, and badly developed plot/backstory and needlessly graphic, disturbing detail. Even if you loved Fingerprints or Roswell High pass on this book, it is nothing like them.

This book was superrr creepy and graphic. But Ms. Metz also tied in some romance pretty seamlessly. I enjoyed the book overall.

Excellent book! Loved the plot, characters, writing, flow, etc. One of the best books I've read in 2014. Nicely done. Recommend highly.
