A mostly pictorial book with brief comments outlining the history of each building and its current usage. A nice light book, good for the coffee table. Doesn’t delve too deeply into things but whets the appetite to do so. I enjoyed learning the dates that buildings were established and their original purposes. It would have been good to have the exact addresses for each building stated. Some were, but the majority were very vague as to location. It’s so sad to see some of the beautiful buildings that no longer stand. The Federal Coffee Palace on Collins Street was breathtaking in its beauty but was knocked down in the 1970's and replaced with a modern monstrosity. We have to preserve these incredible historic structures. Today's buildings are so artless and lacking in style in comparison. More interior photographs would have been nice. Surely it wouldn't have been hard to get better contemporary photos.
An interesting pictorial book with good information on the history of Melbourne, its buildings of the better known sites in a 'then and now' format. A good memory lane book for the elderly, a look and learn book for the new comer or simply a coffee table adornment. It is recognised the book is light reading and was not designed as an architectural catalogue of Melbourne, but it does have some easily avoided annoying features, especially for the tourist or new comer. The addresses are regularly not given, the name of the owner/occupier not provided, the 'new' photographs are not dated.
A lovely gift book full of interesting photos of Melbourne City's landmark building and how they originally looked compared to the modern day. Although a lot of heritage buildings have been demolished in the past, it is surprising how many still stand. A great gift for tourists and locals alike.
Fantastic pictorial history of Melbourne and it's most historic buildings. It includes photos of the past then a more current photo allowing you to compare the landscape of this beautiful city.
