kirkus-

In this communal dung hill, the wife of ""Chief Basho,"" who remains frigid while he frolics, gets off much easier than the reader. . . she goes crazy and commits suicide. The love community otherwise consists of two frustrated lesbians, a fag who will eventually be whisked away by a Western movie hero, two inseparable twins (until one gets raped), ""Gretchen the tramp"" (worthy of the name), and an assortment of other slobs and sluts. They are the ""pets"" adopted by earthmother Enrico Tortini who presides over 180,000 acres and the ex-ghost town of Jackline, rechristened Jacklove by its new citizens in Monlana. Among other sordid trips, Basho creates a new high in low blows when he seduces his very willing mother while in the midst of a similar scene gritty Gretchen exclaims. ""Don't just stand there, put my foot in your mouth"" and later, ""You're too much, Studnuts, believe me."" Too much too much and as for the writing, Menegas can't even commune-icate.

Very strange book. Not bad, but not good either, and very much a reflection of the era in which it was written. You can see the author struggling with certain social issues -- free love, race, homosexuality, class, and more -- but it's all rather mixed up and his message (if there is one) is a bit unclear.
