In the last book by Darlton in the series we had a dachshund robot, now we get walking cucumbers. Okay, imagination is limited and you can come up with only so many alien creatures. The Swoons are good at working with small objects. You see, because they are tiny and have better eyes they are better technicians. And so Rhodan tries (and manages) to get 20000 of these guys to start working for Terra. Against the Regent. And the Springers.
It used to be the case, when I was young, that a book with Pucky as the main protagonist could not be bad. But a few lame jokes are not enough anymore. Sad really.
I love the tagline on the book: "The series critics pan twice a month and readers love 24 times a year." That's gold. That kind of bird flip to snobs warms my cockles. Unfortunately, that was my favorite part of the book. I've been aware of the Perry Rhodan books for some time, and I even saw a dreadful film version from the 60s or 70s once. Some fantastic Space Opera art has been generated for these books. Not so much on the story & character front. But hey, I'm only reading #55 of apparently just shy of 3000 Rhodan stories, and a translation to boot. I'm sure I'm missing something. The goofy characters and low-grade humor that runs through the book makes it feel a bit like later issues of the Marvel "Star Wars" comics from the 80s. Not my thing. Even though the actual story of this book is only about 130 pages, I was skimming for the last 40 pages or so. It really didn't hold my interest. I gather the stories eventually became more complex and interesting, but I don't see myself trying to track them down. If they did a Perry Rhodan TV or streaming series, I'd definitely watch it. But I don't think I'll be reading any more of his adventures anytime soon.
