When it's a crime for your bully to be that hot... Stryker: I've partied a little too hard a little too often. Now I'm locked behind these cold iron gates. A cool roommate would make things easier. Only they've stuck me with this scholarship kid. This so-called good influence. Guess the dean didn't notice the roomie's hot body. It's going to be so much fun putting this goody-two-shoes in his place.
Kingsley: Being a hacker was cool. Being on the FBI's Twenty Most Wanted Under Twenty... not so cool. So I've changed my name to hide out behind the ivy walls of this college for the rich and the spoiled. Funny thing. My cocky roommate thinks he's such an outlaw. Dude even thinks he can bully me. Another funny thing. He's hot enough to make me want to play along.
"Hot Roommate Blues" is a full-length 76,000-word gay bully romance novel that explores the early days of Stryker & Kingsley's young relationship. The Happy For Now ending includes some dangling threads. Their up-and-down romance concludes in an unforgettable Happy Ever After in "Hot Mafia Blues," a full-length 95,000-word gay romance with mafia themes.
While these full-length novels are written to be enjoyable as standalones, you'll get the most out of them if you read in this order: *Hot Roommate Blues *Hot Mafia Blues
The Last Chances Academy series is set in an elite all-male private college where gay romance between bad boys flourishes. Expect raw language, high-steam situations between high-energy men, and some on-page bullying and/or domination.
Maybe I'm being unfair giving it 2 stars, but 2.5 is not an option, and I don't feel like rounding up to 3. It's not that it's horrendous, but it's just weird.
So first, the dynamics between the characters are really strange. I can kind of understand what the author was going for - one of them has daddy issues and issues with control. But it isn't written very well. There's lots if talk about puppies, dominant males, alphas and betas. Thank god no omegas are mentioned. And the strange thing, this is not an omegaverse book. It just feels like the author read too much omegaverse, and can't let go of the terminology.
There's lots of uncomfortable power play in the beginning, and some borderline sexual assault. I cringed a lot. And then the MCs are suddenly in love, and I somehow missed all the build up to that, apart from one of them waving his dick at the other at some point, in a rather uncalled for manner.
On the side, it also tries to be a thriller. Secret identities, FBI and mafia are mentioned. Obviously, it fails miserably because: A. it's just a plot device to create some drama between the MCs and B. one genre is already more than this book can handle.
The ending is absurdly abrupt, even if it's supposed to be a build-up for the next installment. But I was thankful it's ended anyhow. No need for more of it, thanks.
While I thought that the two characters definitely seemed to have chemistry together, and that they were hot, I'm not sure that I was able to suspend my disbelief about this whole scenario.
Kingsley is the protege of a mafia don, who is also on the FBI's most wanted list, and yet, the FBI doesn't seem to actually be looking for him in connection to the mafia case. He's changed identities several times, to muddy the waters, and has finally settled into being Kingsley Blake - an orphaned teenager from Chicago who was valedictorian, an amazing humanitarian, and recipient of a new scholarship that allows him to pick the most backwards university in all of the US. Why did he make up a story that is so easy to disprove? Wouldn't it have been better to have been better than average, but not quite so outstanding?
Then there was Stryker. He is the son of the local billionaire and everything in the area is named after his family. Because of his father's money, he thinks that he's untouchable until his father gives him an ultimatum to go to the college named after them, or be cut off. While at school, Stryker bullies everyone because he "owns" the school, town, and county. He is incapable of even realizing that he is basically breaking the law with every other action he commits, and when confronted with the fact, he spouts some very Medici logic about how his county belongs to his family, not DC, and that they are just helping out the folks who help them.
When the FBI show up, Kingsley is immediately sure that they're after him, and Stryker is just as sure that it's all a senior prank. And here's another thing that was hard to suspend my disbelief about. Sure, I went to a decent university, but even the most lazy university seniors I can think of, were too involved in their own stuff to bother with something as lame as some sort of organized secret hazing of freshmen. Stryker's ego, and unfounded self confidence are never challenged, and the end of this book has him setting himself up for failure all while he's congratulating himself on how clever he is.
Overall, I am only barely ok with this book. Neither character was particularly believable, and neither character experienced any significant growth. We just have one overly capable teenager meeting another overly privileged one, they are attracted to each other, but nothing really happens.
Hot Roommate Blues, by Parker Avrile was a pleasant surprise. Interesting things happen when you combine the cocky, privileged and arrogant local billionaire’s son with an orphaned teenager, adopted by a mafia don, trained in the art of hacking… and who is also on the FBI’s Twenty Most Wanted Under Twenty list. Whew!
Stryker Dale, the golden child of Chestnut Dale County, has finally gotten himself into a pickle his father’s money can’t rectify. Given the ultimatum of going to Chestnut Dale University or being cut off, he accepts the proposition, but concocts every scheme imaginable to float through the experience, including intimidation and harassment while hiding behind his family name.
‘Hot Roommate Blues’, by Parker Avrile was a pleasant surprise.
Kingsley Blake, aka Kyle Pressley, picks Chestnut Dale University as the place to hide out and create a new life for himself, using a scholarship his skills put in place. Without the shadow of the Joseph Demayo crime family hanging over him, he portrays himself as the goodie two-shoes valedictorian of his high school and a humanitarian who helps the homeless in his spare time. Secretly, he is an expert hacker and trained in the art of Muay Thai, who has been taught how to evade the law.
Kingsley and Stryker have a somewhat Dom/sub relationship Stryker thinks he controls, but does he? As roommates they engage in hot and demanding sexual encounters that, at first, are just that. Yet, a connection is there and as time passes a reluctant bond forms. Their on again, off again relationship is, at times, painful to witness, but when they connect there is a passion that surpasses everything.
When the FBI comes knocking, Kingsley fears that they have found Kyle Pressley, whereas Stryker dismisses it as senior hazing of the new guys. A twist here puts Kingsley in a precarious situation, one that he has to play along with to remain under the FBI’s radar, where he eventually uses his mafia skills as a way to turn the tables on the rogue FBI agent seeking to bring down the elite of Chestnut Dale County.
I found Hot Roommate Blues to be a unique and engaging story. I did have to overlook some of the slightly implausible scenarios and situations these guys get themselves into. On the flip side, both Kingsley and Stryker pulled off their respective personas quite well, as the intelligent teenager with a hidden past and the privileged brat.
Their on again, off again relationship is, at times, painful to witness, but when they connect there is a passion that surpasses everything.
Hot Roommate Blues is the first part of a two-part series that concludes when Hot Mafia Blues is released. As such, there are things left unresolved which I assume will be divulged during our next visit to Last Chances Academy.
What a transition from bully to friends to lovers. Stryker and Kingsley become unlikely college roommates.
Stryker ends up behind bars and his father pulls a lot of strings to get him out of trouble. His final chance is to go to college and stay out of trouble. Kingsley is a hacker. Ends up o the FBI list and seeks to hide out at a college for the wealthy. His new roommate is not what he bargained for.
Stryker believes he is truly bullying Kingsley. Kingsley is intrigued enough to play along. The perceived weaker man ends up being the stronger of the two.
Follow these two on an interesting ride.

It was difficult to finish this book. I really hate giving such a low rating, but here we are.
The writing was juvenile and awkward. The characters needed to be fleshed out more. The plot needed a bit more complexity. The editor needed to do their job.
Bully to friends to lovers I was really excited when I read about this book and couldn’t wait to start reading it. Stryker is a spoilt brat who is the son of a billionaire who thinks he can get away with anything. He’s been in trouble with the police before and once again he’s in trouble for stealing a liquor van and having a party. But this time he’s gone too far.
Kingsley hasn’t had the best of starts and he has come to college to better himself. But what people around him don’t know is that he’s changed his name because the FBI are after him. So on his first day he is called to the deans office and told that his roommate is no other than Stryker because they feel he can learn a lot from Kingsley but it’s an instant dislike for Skyler. Stryker wants to party, wants to have fun, want to drive around in fast cars. Kingsley want to none of that. Stryker thinks that he can bully Kingsley but the attraction between them is obvious. But it isn’t long until Stryker need Kingsley and Kingsley helps Stryker. And it isn’t long till friends turns into lovers. But when the FBI come looking to talk to Kingsley he thinks that he has been found but it doesn’t seem the case but what else can they be after.?? I really struggled with this book because I found that I really couldn’t take to Stryker He was such a spoiled brat. He thought he was entitled to every think and then you have Kingsley he’s really just trying to make something of himself. But when they’re together it’s Kinda right. Together they are very addictive and exciting. I really liked the storyline and cant wait the see what Parker Avrile has in store for us next.

Troubled teens, enemies to lovers & Corrupt FBI agent; An enjoyable book
This book is part of a series. The story does not end at the end of this book. You will need to read the second book in the series.
This story is told from two point of views; the 'adopted' son of a former mob boss who is also one of the FBI most wanted under 18 hacker (Kingsley) and the delinquent son of an extremely controlling billionaire (Stryker). They end up as roommates in university and eventually fall in love. However, a corrupt FBI agent targets Kingsley to spy on Stryker's father. Things eventually start to go wrong and the story continues in book 2.
I enjoyed the way the story was told. It was clear that both Stryker and Kingsley care deeply for each other; eventually (enemies to lovers). I would definitely recommend reading this series if you found the blurb to be interesting

I’m a start off and say this wasn’t like the bully romance books I’ve read before. It seems a bit different plus. I didn’t understand this book being an “academy” book like I was confused about that.
Plus they didn’t really smash at all lol. The only thing I read was kissing, sucking D’s, and sometimes fingers lmao. I’ve read MM ROMANCE before like I said this was a different type of romance to bully among other things. I also want to know what the mafia comes in at besides Kingsley aka Kyle step - foster dad...
Plus it sucks that he couldn’t tell Stryker about who he really is heck I even want to know who he really is myself. That’s why I can’t wait until I read book two because I want to know what they going to find on Stryker dad and how Stryker going to react to finding out Kingsley real name among other things.
Stryker Dale is one step away from doing time but his father has gotten him off after a stupid stunt involving a beverage truck and a party all Stryker needs to do go to college and stay out of trouble easier sad then done.
Kingsley Knight (Kyle) this low budget college perfect place for him to hide and know one will know who he is a hacker and the adopted son of a Chicago crim family now doing time. Hes burned his bridges and a life of crime till things heat up between him and his new roommate Stryker he's trouble then the FBI comes knocking.
There is a on again off again relationship that becomes something more a mystery surrounding both these guys and a FBI agent so I can't wait to see were that all leads.

A bullying to friends to lovers romance. Stryker is something else. Overbearing, dominating and a bully to Kingsley who is fierce in his own secretive right. Together these two find themselves roommates and lovers on a mission. Together they deliver a light romance with a happy ending. I’m not sure how the story continues but I can see it explaining some of the situations left open ended. An interesting storyline and what follows should be just as engaging from my previous experience with this author.

This book is an interesting mesh of tropes: it’s an enemies-to-lovers story about two college roommates, which would be drama enough. But one is a hacker with mob ties wanted by the FBI and the other is the son of a shady billionaire. Add a corrupt FBI agent, some well-laid, and not-so-well-laid plans, and you have this book. Stryker and Kingsley definitely have chemistry, and while their storyline might strain the bounds of credulity, it’s fun watching them interact.

Stryker and Kingsley are polar opposites. Kingsley wants to be in the shadows and quietly create a new identity. Stryker wants to party and be the center of attention. They feel attraction, but while Stryker embraces it looking to dominate, Kingsley fights as he spirals into Stryker. Neither expects romance to bloom, but sometimes what you need is not what you expect. Who is really the badder of the two bad boys?

Normally I don’t read stories about bullying, I went through too much of my own, but something about this book drew me in. The characters are so different and extremely interesting. The bullying actually felt like “pigtail pulling” to me with both characters being attracted to each other. All in all, I’m glad that I took a chance and read this. I really enjoyed it. I liked Hot Roommate Blues. It's the first book in the Last Chance Academy series by Parker Avrile. I liked Stryker and Kingsley. I thought the story's flow was really slow and probably could have been thinned out to make the story move along faster. I didn't really like Stryker initially, but as the story progressed, Stryker grew on me. I liked Kingsley from the very beginning. I look forward to reading the next book in the series when it comes out.

This is not necessarily a match made in polite circles. In this enemies to lovers story with an element of bullying thrown in, we have one guy who is a hacker with shady ties who is on the FBI wanted list and one guy who has a father who is an unscrupulous business guy. In some ways it was the very fact that these two tended toward naughty that made their story so engaging and a bit zany.

I liked this book about two college freshman who become roommates. It always tickles my fancy when the perceived weaker person has more strength and control than originally thought. The constant push and pull battle for dominance creates quite an interesting dynamic between these two roommates, especially when they are alone! I look forward to reading the next book in the duet.

I didn't really like this book, but I didn't hate it either. I think it was a frustrating read. The page count is really too long for the story being told. Stryker was really annoying, with little to no redeeming or interesting qualities. Kingsley/Kyle, as a character, was a bit more interesting but his attraction to Stryker really lessened his appeal. By the time I finished reading I still didn't know why these characters liked, let alone, loved each other.
This was a good book even though I found it to be a slow read. It's funny how people from different worlds can wind up making things work, at least for awhile.

This is an interesting story with strong characters in Stryker and Kingsley. The author brings drama and romance and gives them a strong chemistry. It's a friends to lovers romance , is well written , moves fluidly and is a great read.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book. All opinions in this review are my own and freely given.
This was my first read from this author. I usually read gay stories from author Aiden Bates. I really liked Stryker. His monologues made me laugh, especially at the beginning of the first chapter. This was a good story and I will read more from this author in the future.

This was a light read for me - and it was mostly enjoyable. There were a couple of sections where I got lost because events were alluded to that happened off screen, but those were for the most part very minor plot points.
Other than that minor quibble, I thought the characters were fun and I cared about them.
Not a bad story, but it finished off like this was an English Comp assignment and the author had reached the "required word count" and just quit. 98% of the book was building the plot, and then in 5 paragraphs, just ends it all, no real detail, no real wrap-up, just "he thought he would play me but I played him instead..." Very disappointing. Not sure I will continue with this author...
I finished reading this out of desperation that it would somehow get better. It did not.
A book full of fake posturing and irritating characters. The phrase "alpha male" is used so many times. All of the characters are absolutely ridiculous (and I'm cringing too much at the attempted "alpha"ness to even be able to find it funny).
Loved the name of one of the MMC’s (Stryker) and the premise, but of course when things got interesting after an inordinate period of time, it ended on a cliffhanger.
