I'm finding books to help me understand the position of First Nations people. This book is a well written record of the part that Elijah Harper played in the rejection of the Meech Lake Accord. The author is a journalist who based it on interviews and records of the participants and reflects native views foreign to most settlers. A friend was telling him (Harper) what to do with some personal financial problems. The author wrote 'Harper listened to his friend, as always; but panic and a sense of urgency are foreign to him, as they are to many native people. Patience is the virtue," explained one Manitoba native leader. "Urgency is not a concept. I don't know of any tribe that has a word for it. The time in which things get done is less relevant than the doing. Inherently, there is a faith in our culture, in the outcome of life."
