This is another book from my childhood courtesy of Scholastic books. Surgeon's Boy is about a boy on his way to colonial Australia to start a new life with his dad Unfortunately, upon their arrival they are kidnapped by pirates desperate to escape their convict life.
Eventually they are able to escape, and amidst a variety of adventures, find freedom in New Zealand.
I loved this tale of early Australia when I was young. I don't know if it's still around, but I hope so as I'm sure it would be as exciting to kids today as it was to me 25 years ago.
