As the Civil War rages among mortal men, Cin Craven is locked in an epic battle of her own—fighting the renegade vampires whose unquenchable appetites she knows all too well. At her side are the immortal warriors of The Righteous—among them her husband, her lover, her soul-mate Michael. With a passion bordering on possession, Cin’s love for Michael knows no bounds. But when a ruthless plantation owner kidnaps Cin’s cousin, the most terrifying battle of all awaits. Cin is drawn to the irresistible lure of dark magic to stop their enemies, while Michael staunchly opposes it—putting their love and loyalty to the ultimate test. RT Book Reviews raves that Jenna Maclaine's Bound by Sin drops "more hints about a dangerous future ... ensuring that readers will want to stick around for the whole ride."
Jenna Maclaine has a BA in history from North Georgia College & State University. When she isn't writing she spends her time caring for the 80+ animals that share her family farm in the beautiful foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Third in the Cin Craven historical (1862) urban fantasy romance series set in the 19th century focused on Dulcinea Macgregor Craven, a.k.a., Cin, now married to Michael. Part of The Righteous, Cin and Michael are partnered with Devlin and Justine to carry out vampire law for the High King.
My Take It's absolute fluff and a great read in spite of Maclaine's haphazard approach to cultural mores and intercourse. The trick with handling a story this way is to not make it obvious. To not distract the reader with the irrelevancies, and Maclaine does do a good job of this.
Rather a lot of tidying up going on in Bound by Sin. Raina is worried that her youngest daughter, Claire, will never marry and after her disastrous first marriage, she is even more concerned. Yet Claire bounces back in a way no one could ever expect…except the Morrigan. Evangeline receives her revenge and the slaves at Kenneway get an extremely hopeful future. Hmmm, you'd almost suspect that Cin had Foresight…
Cin in particular manages to gain a sight of Hope when Pandora helps her to face her black dog. To understand why Cin has struggled so hard with the black magic with which she's been infected and why it affects her as it does. As Maclaine writes of Hamlet, "There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so."
The Story Called back to Ravenworth Hall by a powerful magic, Cin discovers almost all bad news. News which requires that she travel across the ocean to a blockaded Savannah, Georgia to rescue her cousin from her kidnapper, Adrien Boucher, the owner of the Devil's Island plantation.
It's not difficult to find. It's not even difficult to meet with Claire. Getting her to safety even turns out to be child's play. If you have the money. It should be a simple matter of waiting for Justine and Devlin to return to Georgia. It should be if you don't take Adrien's overweening conceit into account. From here on, it's black magic, a snarky ghost, a passionate Claire, the usefulness of war, and ambushes.
All to fulfill a long-held plot.
The Characters Cin Craven, the Red Witch of the Righteous, a.k.a., the Devil's Witch, was turned in 1815 and is now married to Michael, the Devil's Archangel.
Devlin, Dark Lord and leader of the Righteous, was once one of Edward III's champions. He is partnered with Justine, the Devil's Justice, a former courtesan and opera singer.
Aunt Maggie's been dead 10 years now and her granddaughter and Cin's second cousin, Raina Macgregor Mahone (married Tristan from Cin Craven, 2), is now the Macgregor Witch. Claire Mahone is Raina's youngest daughter with an ability to see ghosts, fairies, and other supernatural sights with a newly interesting condition. And Cin has just discovered that her beloved friend, Fiona, died last year in 1861 at age 68 before Cin got back to Ravenworth. Janet is Fiona's only daughter.
Adrien Boucher is a lazy scumbag with delusions of grandeur and no qualms as to how he achieves the heights of which he dreams. After marrying Evangeline Peyton, he had control of her family plantation, Kenneway,.
Pandora is a slave at Kenneway. A slave comfortable with black magic hiding a deep secret from everyone. Ulysses is her husband and both came to Kenneway when Boucher married Evangeline.
Elizabeth McCready and her children are happy enough to see the back of Mr McCready, the overseer for Kenneway.
The Cover and Title Oh brother, someone has taken quite a bit of license with this cover — a 19th century ninja! Or is that ninja-ess?? Cin is clad in her beloved breeches wearing a black corset, its seams outlined in red with red cording tying the front together. Posed in a lunge inside a cemetery, her long red hair unbound and clustering around her neck, Cin is glaring out to the side, a sword in one hand and a dagger in the other. And yes, there was a cemetery in the story. But it was a slave cemetery. I very much doubt they had much in the way of marble statues and fancy tombstones. Even Cin's stance is more of a summary of her usual actions.
At least the title fits in with the cover…more license. The only correlation I can find between title and story is Claire's extracurricular activities.
I blasted through this book like a blowtorch through tissue paper!
Plot Summary: Witch/vampire Cin Craven and her husband Michael are enjoying Paris when she feels compelled to return home to England. One of her relations has used a summoning spell to ask Cin for help. Her cousin was kidnapped by an American, after Claire had come into possession of a very rare Greek urn. Cin takes a ship to America, along with Michael, Devlin and Justine, and they locate Claire on an island off Savannah. What should be a simple task of rescuing her cousin is far more dangerous and complicated than Cin could have imagined. Her enemies exploit the vampires' weakness for sunlight, and Cin must battle the call of the dark magic inside herself.
I'm becoming very fond of historical paranormal romances, and the Cin Craven series holds a special place for several reasons. The first is because it follows the same heroine, almost like an urban fantasy series, and the second is because it covers a lot time and distance.
My favorite part of this series is how it changes location. This time Cin and Michael must travel to America and run the Union blockade during The Civil War to rescue her kidnapped cousin. The story definitely took off for me once they were in the South, and I particularly liked several new characters who were introduced. Now I'm wondering where they'll go next. Will it fast forward 30 years to a rough and tumble western town like Tombstone?
While most authors end their series because the 2 characters are finally together and they therefore feel the tension is gone. Jenna Maclaine is just beginning. She skillfully maintains the deep love between the 2 characters and keeps a simmering, sexual energy brewing. It is never boring!
And although the main characters, Cin and Michael don't always agree, Michael and Cin each have a devotion for the other that carries throughout the entire series, even in times of crisis. Plus, it doesn't hurt that Cin's love interest, Michael is dangerous, gorgeous and loyal.
This series is constantly evolving; I can't wait for Jenna Maclaine's next book! If you haven't tried the Cin series I cannot recommend it enough! But I strongly suggest reading the first, Wages of Sin to really find the most satisfaction.
I have read as many of the Cin Craven books as I can, and all in the past week, so if any of this is repetative or if I go over something I used in a status update, I'm sorry. I got a bit confused by reading a Cin Craven short story out of order.
Now, this book has it all. There is a haunted plantation, a cat who only lets the ghost pet her, a murderer, a voodoo queen, Ares, the god of War, and Morrigan, the Celtic goddess. And vampires. How could I forget the vampires.
We enter into this book with Cin being summoned back to London from France, and her descendants asking her for help. One of her cousins has been kidnapped by an American who wants an urn from her. We also see a bit of sisterly bickering and bonding between Justine and Cin. One of the reasons for the bickering is that Cin has kept her human ties to her family and her old life, while Justine cut all ties with her human life after she was turned. I think this whole series has done a fabulous job of showing the bittersweet aspect of immortality, of watching one's loved ones die and getting close to the next generation only to watch them pass too.
Once the location is discovered, Cin, Michael, Justine and Devlin hop a ship to Georgia and think it will be an easy grab and go. In fact, they go right up to his house and knock on the door in the middle of the night. IN fact, Cin was worried about the propriety of one showing up on someone's doorstep in the middle of the night.
"The bastard had kidnapped my cousin. If that didn't warrant two vampires knocking on your door in the dead of night, I don't know what did."
The jerk wouldn't let them in, so Michael bought the island for Cin. Then they called in Adrien's mortgage and evicted him.
I think that the vampire aspect in this book was touched on, but it wasn't quite as involved as the previous 2 books. Here we deal more and more with Cin's dark side, and how all the voodoo on the island is calling to her dark magic. In fact, Pandora, the voodoo queen from New Orleans, helps Cin to understand that both the light and the dark magic are part of her, and trying to repress the dark magic will only make it "hungrier," so to speak. She needs to find a balance in herself and with her magics.
Michael hates the dark magic and worries constantly. Devlin and Justine are in Jamaica securing their return passage to England, so they aren't in the bulk of the action, but while at first I was sad they weren't in there, by the end, I realized why and how well it had worked.
***SPOILER ALERT***
Meanwhile, I do believe I mentioned a haunted plantation? The villain of the piece, Adrien, the kidnapper and coveter of the urn, killed his wife, and she still haunts the place. Miss Evangeline cracked me up. Seriously snarky ghost.
Now the urn that we've been touching on is the reason Cin's cousin Claire was abducted. It's an urn housing the Greek god of war, Ares. Claire accidentally summoned him, after Morrigan gave him unto her keeping.
Adrien wants to unleash Ares onto the battlefields of the Civil War and kill of the Yankees. Wow. But the urn has to be handed over, not taken, so he took Claire and is trying to "persuade" her to hand over the urn.
I'll stop the spoilers there, but let's jsut say the ending is soo open, and I'm furious that Jenna MacLaine didn't put an excerpt of the next book, after leaving me with that ending. Never fear, it's not quite a cliffhanger, but it's just enough information to leave me with my jaw droppped and flipping the last blank page, thinking "No, no that's not it! What happens next?"
Anyone who loves Cin, will love this one too, even if it's not as action packed as the previous books, we do see more of Michael and Cin,and we see Cin growing and learning to deal with her darker half.
A great book, a great series, and I'm dying for more Cin and Michael.
Starting this series, I mistakingly assumed it was a trilogy; considering this last installment was released in 2009. I -★ because, judging by the way Bound by Sin ends, it definitely is not and I don't foresee another installment ever releasing. Had I'd known that, I probably would have never picked it up in the first place.
Yet another fun installment in the series. This book takes place nearly 50 years after Cin was turned, and the first few chapters made me cry.
It was great to see both Cin and Michael come to terms with Cin's magic. I only hope that Devlin and Juliana can do the same - they are Cin's family, and she needs them.
I think my only real criticism of this book was that we didn't get much of Devlin and Juliana. *pout*
Can't wait to see more of Morrigan's plan play out. When does book 4 come out?! *stamps foot irritably*
I loved the third book in this series as much as the other two. This is definitely in the top 3 best vampire series' I've ever read. My only complaint is that there are no more books starring Cin for me to look forward to.
The author of this series did a perfect job of balancing a continuing series that expands and develops the characters and the world-building with creating a new and unique plot for each of the three books. There was just enough of both to make each book a terrific new read that also had new things to learn about the characters you love.
The one thing missing in this last book was that Devlin and Justine were only in the book briefly at the beginning and the end. They were fun, interesting characters that I liked almost as much as Cin and Michael so it was too bad they didn't star in this book, although it really wouldn't have made sense given the story.
I loved that there were some new characters to get to know in this book, and all of them were wonderful! Varied and unique, each with their own story and dramas for the reader to learn about.
The Civil War is a period I enjoy reading about, so that was just a bonus that this book was set in that period and some of that was worked into the plot, even if it was minimal.
Truly, I loved absolutely everything about this entire series and hugely enjoyed reading all three of the books. I am very sad that series isn't continuing, but I am so glad I found it, and got to read the three books there are in Cin's world. Highly recommended if vampires are your thing, especially if you love strong female characters!!
I have to change form 4 1/2 to 5... Jenna has really done a good job with this book it has romance and adventure. This book has lots of elements, I love including great sex, a plantation home with a ghost to boot, Ares’s the god of war (I loved how he was brought into the book it was brilliant ), Morrigan the war goodness of course, and Pandora the voodoo queen the story line was really good and different, with a great cliffhanger ending..
I love Cin she is one character I would love to be. Cin is a witch/vampire she is has good and dark magic that in this book she gets to explore more, a wonderful husband along with two friends that make up of the Righteous. If you haven’t been able to read the first two books please do it helps to understand Cin more. Now if you don’t want any spoilers please stop reading. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In this book Cin’s cousin Clair gets kidnapped, Cin and Michael has to go to America to find her this is where it gets good of course, Michael finds the only way to get Clair is to buy a plantation home along with slaves and the lands holds lots of dark magic. Clair holds something form Morrigan it’s a urn and in that holds the god of war now remember Cin is in 1862 so, you have the Civil war going on in America so, then you know the god of war will love the war or will he love something else?? You need to read to find out more..
I don't know why for the third book in Cin Craven series ,not make me want to give it 5 stars, but still its good. The synopsis sounds great, and I expect this book will better from the second, but I must admit, I'm a little disappointed.
With Civil War in America, between North and South side, Cin must help her cousin, when she abducted. Cin travel to America from English with her husband Michael, and find that her cousin, Claire, have something, an urn that can make the war in America getting worse. The urn Claire keep is urn that contain Ares, the War God from Greek Mythology. If Ares released, the man who abduct Claire, will get him to make his side as a winner in Civil War, but there are things that not expected, because Ares falling in love with Claire, so it make Claire in dangerous too.
In the other side, Cin must struggle with her dark magic, Michael afraid that she will succumb forever to the darkness. Cin become sad, because Michael still not believe her, even though they already become husband and wife. Then, Cin got a help from Pandora, Claire's abductor's daughter. Pandora said that Cin must accept who she truly was, why she has a dark magic. The question is, is Cin ready to released her dark magic?
The story still great like two books before, but the conflict sometimes feel flat for me. The ending make me wonder , is there a continue in this series? If the answer is yes, I can't wait to read the fourth book, and what adventure that Cin and Michael will face next...
I do have to give credit to the author who showed the downsides to being a vampire, having to watch all those you love age and die. I'll admit I shed a few tears in certain scenes of this book and at the same time I think some great characters got killed off. We do get introduced to new characters but I think a series needs those constant supporting characters to keep it going. If Devlin and Justine were in it more I think it would have been a bit better, but I found myself feeling disconnected to everyone in this book. Even Michael who I loved in book 1, at every turn he is doubting Cin and giving her the 'pity stare' which annoyed me to no end.
Another thing I noticed with this series is the age gaps between each book, I get that they are vampires and obviously live forever but there was like 20 year gaps between each one but Cin and Michael still acted like they didn't trust each other after 40 something years together. It just didn't make sense.
Lastly was the Epilogue with Morrigan...ehhhhh, It wouldn't have killed the author to give us a little more info on what's next.
Overall it wasn't a bad book, I did enjoy parts but I found myself getting bored. If there's another book I'll definitely read it but I won't be waiting anxiously for it.
Meh. I really liked the other two books in this series, but Bound By Sin just didn't do it for me. It was a pretty easy read, so I couldn't give it less than three stars, but I doubt I'll rush out to get the next book. I was a little annoyed that the description on the back made it seem like Cin and Michael were going to have some big fight over her using black magic that would put their love and loyalty to the ultimate test (insert dramatic music here). When in reality, he just kinda scowled, told her he was worried about her, and followed her around too much. Then she licked his wiener, and ta-da!, all was forgiven. It was cute in the first two books, but now their lovey-dovey crap is wearing kinda thin.
one of my very favourite series that i can read time and again. i absolutely love every story and the audio books are some of the best i have listened to - the voice seems to perfectly encapsulate the stories. the novellas add so much background and are definitely not just filler. a really great combination of witch, vampire and demon with just a little werewolf, some ghosts and gods .. plenty of action, plenty of romance and a lot of family
3/1/19 - still one of the best of the best. absolutely love this series
Great series!, don't miss this the chance to read this one.
The characters are very well defined, lots of depth and interest in their personalities. I love that the series, follows one character and how she interacts with her supporting cast. Rather than one book about character A, then book two about character B and so on. Don't get me wrong I loved Immortals After Dark, but this type of series is nice as well. I love that it's set in historical Great Britain and travels throughout the world. The paranormal aspects are nicely intertwined with the series as a whole.
I'd love to read a spin off from this series.
Thanks you Jenna for such a well written series of stories.
I wasn't sure what to expect going into this book. As I've said in my review of Grave Sins (book #2 in this series), I was pretty disappointed in it. So, I wasn't sure how I would like this one. Fortunately, though, I really liked this one and I thought it was back up to par with the first book in the series.
This story takes place in 1862, so this is 47 years since Cin was first turned into a vampire and 34 years after the last book. This time around, life has changed a lot since Cin was human. Most of the people she knew and loved as a human have passed on and their children are now having children. It's a sad time for Cin because she feels like she's losing every scrap of what was left of her human life. When she is summoned home to Ravenworth, she is worried about what she might find. She comes to find out that a family member named Claire (third cousin I believe?) has been kidnapped. She is asked to find her and bring her back home. This journey takes Cin and Michael to America where they end up on an island called Devil's Island just off the coast of Savannah, Georgia -- at the very beginning of The Civil War.
I thought this was a very fun and entertaining story. The villain, so to speak, wasn't that threatening though. But, I will say that since Maclaine didn't try to make this one a mystery, I enjoyed it much more. The last one was terrible as a mystery and I appreciated that she gave that part up in this book.
I also really like that Maclaine does her vampire series differently, in that she isn't afraid to jump years ahead for the next story. In many vampire series' it seems that the author limits themselves to the current time and that each book takes place one after the other. But the thing with vampires is that you have a limitless palette of time you can work with. In real life crazy things don't always happen one after the other, so I can appreciate that she spreads her stories out like that to show change and growing maturity in Cin as a vampire and also just the changes in the world around her.
This one ended pretty crazy. It was kind of a cliffhanger. I'm not sure what to think about it because I've heard that the author's publisher didn't renew her contract. So I don't know if we'll get a wrap up of the whole series anytime soon or if it's just going to hang out for awhile until something gets approved and she's able to write another story for the series. I know there's a novella after this, but it doesn't sound like it has anything to do with what happened at the end of this one. Without giving too much away, it seemed to be driving at a larger story and bigger things at stake for Cin. So, to me, it would seem that the series would just start to get really going after this one, if she could continue. But I suppose we'll just have to wait and see what happens.
Overall, I thought this was a great book. I'm not as attached to this series as I am with others, but they're still entertaining enough books and I hope that one day she'll be able to continue on with them so we can find out what happens next!

Bound by Cin by Jenna Maclaine Paranormal Romance- December 29th, 2010 4 ½ stars
Bound by Cin is a exhilarating read that is sure to please devoted fans of the series and become a great find for lovers of paranormal, vampires and Urban Fantasy (although readers of very dark and moody fantasy may find it a little light). Jenna Maclaine skillfully writes a novel brimming with danger, mystery and mythical characters that raise the stakes for Cin and her friends.
In this latest installment, Cin (who is a vampire and powerful witch) is called back home to find a distant relative, named Claire who has been kidnapped to the Americas. There Cin finds danger and black magic which she has tried to suppress. And Cin must find her courage to overcome her darkest fears. Adding to Cin’s stress, the retrieval of Claire isn’t as straight forward as it appears especially when a troublesome ghost and interfering Gods have plans for Claire, too.
What makes this series extra-ordinary is the author’s ability to reinvent Cin by placing her in new and exciting situations that are thrilling and fascinating. Cin is constantly challenged and learns more about herself and her powers. Each story delves into the mystery behind Morrigan, the goddess of war and death and Morrigan’s deep interest in Cin’s destiny. (The author definitely does not take her readers for granted with recycled plots lines.)
Another reason I adore this series so much is because the main characters have a really feeling of camaraderie and I enjoy their interplay. And although each has their own past and struggles they are likeable and engaging. The story invites you to enjoy it.
But what I love the most about this series is something that is rarely found in any series. A strong, mature and loving relationship between the 2 main characters. (In most books once the hero and heroine have found each other the story promptly ends. But what happens later? Do they still carry on?) This series is a real treat because the reader gets to read more about the main characters’ relationship. And it doesn’t disappoint!
While most authors end their series because the 2 characters are finally together and they therefore feel the tension is gone. Jenna Maclaine is just beginning. She skillfully maintains the deep love between the 2 characters and keeps a simmering, sexual energy brewing. It is never boring!
And although the main characters, Cin and Michael don’t always agree, Michael and Cin each have a devotion for the other that carries throughout the entire series, even in times of crisis. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that Cin’s love interest, Michael is dangerous, gorgeous and loyal. (But don’t think he is a push over; he has his own strong personality, too.)
The 2 characters really complement and support each other. A nice switch from the heroine who has to do everything or the love interest who is: unemotional, unresponsive or questionable. And this is why I feel lovers of dark fantasy may not find this book as interesting because while there is plenty of tension in the story, the characters actually have a healthy relationship and are happy together. (Shock!) So, it doesn’t have the angst and despair found in many of the relationships in that genre. But if you are a little bit more of a romance reader like me and like the happy ending/couple and at least some resolution to your story you will definitely enjoy this series!
This series is constantly evolving; I can’t wait for Jenna Maclaine’s next book! If you haven’t tried the Cin series I cannot recommend it enough! But I strongly suggest reading the first, Wages of Sin to really find the most satisfaction.

WOW What a great end to a great series! I was iffy on the first 2 books but something made me stick it out - this third book was AWESOME!!!
I haven't seen anything about a 4th book - but she left it well open for another story to take place - or maybe another series that takes place along with this - like Rechelle Mead is doing with Vampire Academy and Bloodlines .... That would be cool!!! A whole new generations for Cin Carvan :)
Ok this book was awesome - I missed Justine though - she and Delvin were off on a boat trying to find a ride back from America to London - which was a 2 week trip - So Michael and Cin went off to Find Cin's cousin Claire - WOW! Such awesomeness :)
Michael bought Cin an island - Island Esme - NOOOO It was .. what Devil's ilsand I believe :) PErfect name - Here we met a few new characters - Pandora - a voodoo witch whom helps Cin with her Dark Magic fears - Total Greatness with that part! I was shocked Michel took it so well - but then again - dancing to the beat of the drums .... ahhh yeah - that will be me and my husband tonight :) KIDDING! Geez
Anyways - SO We met Pandora - There is Lizzie - she is the island's new advisor who will be taking over with running things while Cin is off being a " Rightous " and bringing good to all that's evil :)
Then there is Savannah - the ghost of the island - she's funny :) And her cat that isn't dead but hates everyone but her :)
Oh ok well lots happened in this story I was really sad at the begining - but I think it really set this series apart from a lot of other Vamprire books I've read - For one - the years go by - The first book was 1818 or something like that - the second book was 13 years later - then this last book took place .. 45 or so years later - the part that set this book apart from the rest - she kept her ties with her Humans - Fiona - and her daughter Janet - Then Aunt Maggies Daughter Rainana? The sad part was that she got to experience the first death - and it takes a toll on her about her eternal youth - most books , once she's a vampire - she is dead to all humans - but this one really touched me :) She and Justine went to see Archie whom was on his deathbed - wont tell you what happens but you learn a little more about Archie then you did in the first book.
Well that's about it for me - I really did like this series a lot more then I thought I would - especially the 3rd book - if she has more coming out .. sure I'll read it - then I'll let you know :)
Bound by Sin is book three in Jenna Maclaine’s Cin Craven Series.
While in France, Cin feels the pull of a summoning spell which leads her back to her home (when she was human) Ravensworth in England. Summoned by a family member Raina, Cin finds out her cousin Claire has been kidnapped and taken to America. Cin also finds out a lot of those she loved during her human life have died due to old age which makes her question her own immortality as a vampire and witch. She promises Raina she will find Claire and bring her home safely, which requires Cin and Michael to go to Georgia during the Civil War where they end up on a plantation amidstslavery times. Cin comes into contact with Pandora, a Voodoo Queen, who tests Cin’s strength and hold on her own black magic. Add in Ares the Greek God of War and you’ve got a whole heep of action.
The loss of some of my favorite character’s in the series was extremely sad to me. I know how pathetic am I? This only made me love the story more as most vampire novels don’t start from the beginning of their “lives”s as vamps but are straight into the present time. With the loss of character’s, you begin to see what’s happening to Cin and her loss of humanity. Which makes you want to find out what Cin’s like in present day!
There are brief appearances by Devlin and Justine but this story centre’s around Cin and Michael. It’s not a story of The Righteous, the vampire organization that Cin, Michael, Devlin and Justine make, but a story of Cin coming full circle and learning how to conquer her two sides and Michael trying to except it. The love scenes between the two of them are steamy and loving, they’re the perfect vampire couple even if they still do have a lot to learn about each other. There are also a lot of new character’s, even a ghost, which makes me wonder how they will fit into future books. The ending, what an ending. Something big is coming in the next book that involves Cin and Morrigan, the overseer of The Righteous.
Jenna’s writing has gotten cheekier than before, though there’s a lot of saddness in the first few chapters the rest of the book is straight action and you have no idea what’s going to happen! Bound by Sin, easily became my favorite of the series and I truly don’t know how I am going to wait until the next book comes out! Who knew Historical Paranormal Romance’s could be this exciting and action packed?!
REVIEW COURTESY OF ROMANCE JUNKIES reviewer: pamelalynne Rating 3.5 Blue Ribbons
Cin Craven is summoned home by a powerful witch. When she arrives, Cin discovers that the witch is actually a relative and she needs Cin's help to rescue her daughter, Claire. Claire and her mother traveled to London to get away. While shopping one day, Claire was given an urn by a widow. An American showed interest in the same urn and kept offering to buy it from her. Claire's mother believes she was kidnapped because Claire suddenly disappears with the urn and no location spell she uses can find Claire. Then wonder of wonders, the American is gone as well.
Cin uses her magic to locate Claire and is soon on a mission to bring her home. The American is holding Claire hostage on his plantation until she gives up the urn. Cin doesn't understand Claire's reluctance to give up the urn, but soon will. Cin cannot set foot in the American's house since being a vampire requires an invitation. Cin's husband hatches a plan and they buy the American's house out from under him. Since they now own the house, entering it is no issue.
The American is forced to leave the premises, but they all know he will be back. Meanwhile, Cin needs to deal with some problems of her own. Something about the island is making her ill at ease and her black magic is becoming a tad out of control. Not only is it scaring Cin, but it is causing trouble between her and her husband. There is terrible danger lurking ahead and Cin must fight with everything she has if she wants to survive.
Cin Craven is back and better than ever in the third book in the series, BOUND BY SIN. She is constantly overcoming obstacles and never fails to regain control of the situation at hand. Cin is a kick-butt heroine and she is even sassier in BOUND BY SIN. Jenna Maclaine is an up and coming star in the paranormal romance genre. She does a wonderful job creating such relatable characters. BOUND BY SIN was one wild adventure that left me on the edge of my seat right up until the end. I loved BOUND BY SIN and cannot wait to see waht else Ms. Maclaine has in store for me next.
I love that this is set in Savannah during the Civil War. I’m always curious to read how vampires handled the problems they had to face when they lived back in the past, not just a brief flashback or mention from modern day vampires. This covers a lot of the complications that a vampire has traveling by sea as well as staying in regular hotels and inns. Devlin’s shipboard situation is very ‘human’ and shows just how dedicated this foursome are to each other.
I love Cin and Michael, but they are either too lovely dovey or completely at odds, seeming to distrust the other on barely a whim. Not a way to have a solid relationship. In this one, in spite of their problems, they keep their relationship true and don’t fight: as much. In fact all the conflicts in this book are too easily solved.
The antagonists are too wimpy. You’d think that Adrien Boucher would be a lot smarter about some of his actions, being as he came up with this plan to change history in the first place. And Mr. McCready may as well not even be there. And they’re are completely outnumbered by the good guys.
It’s sad that Cin’s connection with Ravenworth is disappearing. She had goof friends and family there. Fiona’s last laugh with the inscription on Cin’s grave is cute. But the inhabitants of Devil’s Island are also interesting and hopefully will provide her with a new human connection. I especially like Miss Evangeline and her cat.
Towards the end you can see the two purposes for their trip to Savannah. The current story crisis of rescuing Claire and the series thread of Pandora teaching Cin how to handle her dark magic. Cin’s accepting her dark magic seems to be the whole point of this light weight story, while the intriguing conclusion of Claire’s divine situation would make an entertaining series spinoff.
The paraphrased quote from ‘The A-team’ at the end is nice. “I love it when a plan comes together”.
Fave scenes: Archie’s death, Cin’s confrontation with Ares and her final battle with Adrien.
Synopsis: As the Civil War rages among mortal men, Cin Craven is locked in an epic battle of her own—fighting the renegade vampires whose unquenchable appetites she knows all too well.
The sad part of this book is that it's the last one of the series due to the publisher being stupid and not renewing it. I like this series, and encourage those who like PNR romances to read it. Yes, it is a historical piece. Yes, this put time flashes from 1828 to the US Civil War and Cin's family is slowly dying off.
If you want to read all the books, please make sure you read the Anthologies STRANGE BREW (JULY 2009): This anthology features a short story from Cin's world titled "Dark Sins," set in 1818., HUNTRESS (JUNE 2009): This anthology features a short story from Cin's world titled "Sin Slayer," set in 1889. THE MAMMOTH BOOK OF VAMPIRE ROMANCE (JULY 2008): This anthology features the short story titled "The Righteous," set in 1675. This is Devlin and Justine's story and a prequel to Wages of Sin
Here's hoping the author self-publishes any future releases soon.
I'm in love! I like that you can encounter love, friendship, adventure, and mayhem in every single book in this series that you pick up. I've been waiting for this book, and it was so worth the wait. It was fabulous! Jenna McClain is by far one of my favorite writer's. Her books are about people and connections. It makes me feel like you belong to a part of something whenever you read one of her books. I also like that the characters are relatable... to?. (Not a real word?... Do I need a hyphen?....oh well *shrugs*) The sadness and struggle the Cin goes through, I can feel that. It makes the reading believable and enjoyable. It connects you to the characters. I LOVE that Cin's such a strong female lead. Mostly Heroine, some Hero. :) Very empowering. I like that in this book Cin gets reconnected to humanity; another link to make life less lonely. Buuuuuttt I haven't found anything about the fourth book except that Jenna says she's writing one. Makes one antsy! Especially with the ending. I can't wait till they catch up to the 21st century. These characters are really filling out. I'm eager to read the short story about Devlin and Justine, and the other in-between stories of Michael & Cin.
More 3 than 4 stars (3.5) This one is harder to rate. I guess I'd give it more of a 3.5, although there are some aspects I reallly liked. Hopefully although the author lost her publisher she will be able to contniue with the series.
The antagonist and tensions of the main plot line were strong, as in the other books of the Cin Craven series. The pacing was well played out. I really enjoy how decades pass with each instalment of this vampire tale. Going through the passage of time with them rather than in flashbacks from present day is a nice take by the author and allows some poignant scenes near the beginning that were a standout part of the book.
However when stories start adding Greek mythology characters into the mix that better been done REALLY well or things move into the territory of hoaky super quickly. The author did a fair job with it but overall I found that particular plot line distracting and the actions of the fallen mythological deity not really believable, even within the fantasy world of a witch turned vampire novel. Still overall a good light read.
Another 4.5 star book in the Cin Craven series! I normally don't love historicals but this series is written with a more current vocabulary and I think that makes it more platable for me. Cin and her vampire Champion husband, Michael, are so totally in love still when this installment takes place - about 50 years after the previous book ends - that I got misty-eyed in a couple spots and sincerely coveted Cin's marraige. Their co-horts in The Righteous (Devlin and Justina) are separated in much of this book but we are introduced to new friends after they make the long trip from England to Savannah, Georgia to thwart a kidnapper. As with the previous two stories, there continues to be lots going on and I loved every minute of it! Unfortunately Ms. M's website doesn't say when to expect the follow-up. Bummer.
Cin gets summoned home to Ravenworth. Her cousin has been kidnapped by a Georgian plantation owner. Cin and Michael must go to Devil's Island to try and get her back. Only problem is that there is a user of dark magic on the island, and it calls to Cin's magic, making it hard to control.
I absolutely adore this series! I love that Cin has ties to the human world that keep her and the Righteous grounded. They are all great characters, strong, loyal, and easy to love. This book is feeled with action, romance, adventure, and mystery. With vampires, witches, gods, and ghosts, this book is a thrill ride a minute!!
I adore this series and can't wait for the next installment to see what Cin will get herself into next!! 5stars!
I really wish I hadn't read the third book first...well this wouldn't be the first time. Good news...it can be read first or simply read alone. It give enough background on the characters to help the disclose the familiarity between the characters.
I will be going back to read the first two books (in order). I will learn how everyone came to be together and how Cin Craven was turned.
Great read, engaging, exciting and refreshingly pleasant.
Okay - so I thought Grave Sins was going to be my favorite in the series... I mean the necromancer twist was unexpected... but Belladonna was no big surprise... she was just too convenient a scapegoat.
But this one I really liked. This is my new favorite Cin Book.
Vampires, Voodoo, not to mention a God of war. Yum.
Best book so far in this series. Cin really finds herself in this one (without giving out too many details). I do wish I hadn't read the epilogue- this was definitely planned as more than a 3 books series (and 3 novellas). (No book 4 as far as I know)
I really enjoyed this series and I think that this book was by far my favorite of the series. I am unhappy that this book is the end of the series. I realize that sometimes it just happens that way but I was all caught up in this series and then it is over.
