An interesting play about climate change, dealing with the role of scientists and the compromises they make with the government. Clearly very well researched but it is also weighed down by the research. The characters are not particularly likeable which is a shame as greater empathy with some of them might have made the play more urgent. But what is really disappointing about it are a couple of casually racist gags which may have been considered witty in 2009 but now leave a very bitter taste in the mouth. Contrast this play with April De Angelis’ more accessible, shorter and angrier play, Extinct (2021), which takes an international look at climate change and the deficiencies of The Contingency Plan become very apparent.
Great topical piece on family and global warming! Would have loved to see this onstage (with the miniatures of London flooding) would have been quite the spectacle!
