DECEITS AND WISHES

This is maybe the most famous tale part of the One Thousand and One Nights (also known as The Arabian Nights) but ironically…

…it wasn’t part of the original book!!!

It was later added by Antoine Galland since he heard the story, he liked it and he thought that it could be works as part of a revised edition…

…and he was right!

I liked the story but I think that it has just too much “climaxes”, I mean, when you think that the tale is finally over and everybody will live everafter, there is yet another menace to solve, and they’re kind similar, so it was like dragging the plot to make the narrative longer than it was iniitally conceived…

…but also it has some changes, well, not changes, elements that I didn’t see in the adaptations (mostly the animated and live-action by Disney) like having two genies…

…but I didn’t like that they put the princess as someone too easily tricked (it’s not like Aladdin is a cunning mastermind impossible to fool, but certainly the tale puts the princess as someone easier to deceive (and sometimes, it wouldn’t be that easy if Aladdin just explain her the importance of the lamp (so, she’s easy to trick and also Aladdin didn’t trust her…

…this book certainly wouldn’t be famous for feminist value! Geez!)

This story isn’t so “Arabian” as you may think or it’s more international as I’d expected since Aladdin was living in “one of the greatest cities from China”, and he meets a sorcerer is from the “Maghreb” (which is an archaic way to name the central and nothern areas of Africa)…

…in any case, the evil sorcerer tricks Aladdin and his mom to help him to look in a cave, to do that, the sorcerer gave a magic ring to Aladdin (this is quite relevant since Aladdin is able to summon a less powerful genie from it) and there Aladdin finds the famous magic lamp which contains a way more powerful genie (who is the one which people is more familiarized) who ironically the first time to be summoned is by Aladdin’s mom!

Obviously, with a magic lamp, Aladdin wishes what any man would wish…

…having a castle and marry a princess!

But you can trust that the evil sorcerer (and also his, also evil, brother, geez) won’t be thrilled about it and they’ll employ their deceitful ways to mess with new “magical” life of Aladdin.

pretty simple and pretty different from the film
the names are so strange even I as an Arab have never heard of such name as (Badr-al-Budur) or (Abanazar)

It's a great read for complete English beginners.
In my case, there are about one or two unfamiliar words and expressions per page.
I sometimes wonder, "Isn't this too easy?"
But I think it needs to be a bit easier to read.
It's also quite short, which is nice.
If, like me, you're just starting to read English books, I highly recommend it.

I remember liking this book a lot. I wasn't very fond of reading at a time, and my English wasn't as advanced as it is now, but I was able to finish it with no problem.

I was already familiar with the story, and I will recommend these short books for anyone who wants a quick read as well as to start reading in English.

I might give it another read someday after all these years lol.
