When can waiting for a party be both a trick and a treat? Just ask Julius! This sweet and simple board book for the youngest readers features Julius, star of the Kevin Henkes classic Julius, the Baby of the World. The charming board books featuring favorite preschool characters from Kevin Henkes All five are also available together in a A Box of Treats.
Kevin Henkes is an American writer and illustrator of children's books. As an illustrator he won the Caldecott Medal for Kitten's First Full Moon (2004). Two of his books were Newbery Medal Honor Books, Olive's Ocean in 2004 and The Year of Billy Miller in 2014. His picture book Waiting was named both a 2016 Caldecott Honor Book and a Geisel Honor Book. It was only the second time any author has won that combination of awards.
I was disappointed with this book. Kevin Henkes is a favorite author/illustrator of millions, including me, but this book doesn't deliver his characteristic wow factor. The illustrations are terrific with the beloved Julius in an always entertaining Halloween party setting, but I was amazed that the editors and Henkes missed the opportunity to use this as a counting board book for toddlers.
I think is was Isaac's FAVORITE halloween time read this season. we read it every day and we even made some cupcakes just like Julius's candy corn cupcakes in the books. Isaac was quite excited about that, even if he doesn't even like candy corn. hahahaha.
This is somewhat of a counting book. But it's also about Julius doing something he shouldn't be doing, and not being held accountable for his actions. Still, pleasant story.
Like most of Kevin Henkes' books, the illustrations here are cute, colorful, bouncy, and feature baby animals. I've noticed that some of the parent reviews online have dissed this book for teaching children to "obey the letter of the law while disobeying the spirit of the law." I didn't really find that to be a huge problem, especially if you discuss it with the child after reading it with them (besides, this is intended for babies). The story features repetition, so it's a good easy reader that kids will delight in.
This is a cute series by Kevin Henkes; for several holidays, there is a book based around an appropriate treat. This one is for Halloween, featuring candy corn, one of my favorites. What is fun about the stories is that even though they each feature the treat, they are not cookie cutter. Each one has a unique story with developed characters from Henkes picture books. This is my least favorite in the series since the story is more about being mischievous, and Julius never really has a conflict.
Not good. Julius misbehaves and doesn't have any consequences. It was also boring. The illustrations were nice, but not enough to add any stars. My 7-year-old gave it zero stars. My 3-year-old wasn't especially interested in it either.
This was a simple story about Julius, who got away with eating the candy corn off of everyone's cupcakes before they saw. There was no recourse. He simply got away with it. Not one of my favorite Henkes stories.
For a simple board book, this really is quite good. Kevin Henkes's character Julius comes through in these few pages just as lively as in Julius, the Baby of the world. This is a fine story.
An excellent early/beginner readers book that is centered around Halloween. It consists of basic words and vocabulary along with pictures that illustrate the text perfectly.
One of my favorite children's books of all time. Hilarious and makes the kiddos giggle everytime. We love to make cupcakes and act out the story in the fall. Kids love it!
