Going to be honest here, when I picked up this book I thought it would be pointless speculation and discussion. It was not. The psychology was interesting and beneficial and the book itself was highly motivational - focusing much less on the physical aspects of self-defence, and more on how to mentally prepare yourself to get out. Sanders did not criminalise all men or assume that only women get attacked. He also included interviews on convicted rapists, and unless there is a huge conspiracy among them to give us false information, providing useful information on exactly what they had wanted to happen in a rape situation for them to go through with it, and by extension how to avoid it. Not usually my type of book, but I thought it was extremely worthwhile reading.

I have just started reading How Dangerous Men Think and so far I have mixed feeling about it. It is a self defense book designed to help women protect themselves from men in cases of sexual harassment, sexual assault and rape. It focuses on the psychology of these dangerous men and gives strategies to handle various situations. I have several criticisms of the book's approach. Even though this book aims to empower and does not make excuses for these men, it still puts the onus on preventing these situations on the victim. The author appears to think that if a woman has the confidence to really fight back she will be able to get out of any dangerous situation. The stories I have heard, both from women I know and those on the internet, show physically fighting back doesn’t always work. The author portrays the freeze response as always unhelpful and fails to address the problems of victim blaming. It also fails to address rape myths or rape culture, which I think is a key part of understanding the psychology of rape. As this is written by a member of the police force, the case studies appear to be the types of cases that are easily prosecuted, rather than representative of typical rape scenarios. Keeping these things in mind, I think this book is certainly worth a read. It might not necessarily protect you from every dangerous situation, but there are situations where it might be useful, such as dealing with sexual harassment.
