I'm still torn on whether Egypt did the right thing in making peace with Israel or left Palestinians high and dry, but over all the book left me with a great deal of respect for Sadat and his wife.
The book is touted as her plan for peace, but I'd say that is not at all what it is about. The greater theme of forgiveness and understanding definitely applies, but some of her specifics are all wrong. She thinks there is a resolution to the refugee problem in letting them return to the region, but not Israel proper- which I think is absurd. I'm still going with one state as the fairest solution, but I realize that one will come with conflict as well.
It was interesting to read a bit about their lives and Sadat's legacy of democracy and peace. He did what he believed in and was willing to pay for it with his life (and did).
She writes about Islam and what it means to her for a bit as well. This is perfect for those who are intent on telling as many as possible that Islam is not a religion of peace, "they" all want to kill us, true Islam is what extremists practice, where are the moderates, etc.
She is a bit confused about Christianity, which is understandable. I thought many of her contrasts with Islam, however, were invalid because she used examples from Catholicism and Calvinism, which in many ways I don't believe are supported by scripture. This in no way invalidates what she says about Islam of her practice of it. The West could learn a lot even if one disagrees with it.
She also writes about feminism. While she encourages independence, she also speaks to the Christian (and Muslim) value of the sexes having different roles, but being partners as well. Often in the US it is a choice- are you a feminist or do you take care of the home?
All in all, it's a good read and short, too.

قرأت الكتاب لاتعرف علي اسره و الشخصيه الغير معلنه لأمور السادات بالرغم من العنوان المخالف لذلك.
وجدت أنه محبوب جدا من أسرته.
بشكل عام الكتاب جيد و عاطفي الي حد ما.

املي في السلام .. رحله خفيفه تربط بين ماضي قريب و حاضر واقع و مستقبل مزهر يرتبط بالسلام .
الكتابه بتأخذنا في رحله و تستعرض مقومات السلام السابق بأسلوب سلس دون الخوض في تفاصيل عميقه قد لايهتم بها القارئ الغير متخصص
بتعرض اشكاليات المراه المصريه والعربية و تطور قوانينها و علاقتها بالمجتمع و التحديات المستقبلية لها
بتعرض إشكاليه نظره العالم للإسلام بشكل عام و للمراه المسلمة بشكل خاص

Though this book contains information about Jehan Sadat's life and her husband, it's focus is more on the political than the personal. Jehan grew up in a middle class family in Egypt, and her father was Muslim while her mother was a Christian. I found it very interesting to see her view (as an educated Muslim woman) of events in the Middle East, on Islam, and on women's rights.
She discusses the history of Egypt (from about 1928 through 2008), of the modern idea of political Islam, and of the beginnings of modern terrorism (i.e. suicide bombings and such). She also discusses the recent history (1917 to 2008) of the Palestinian/Israeli conflict. She lays out what she believes needs to be done in order to achieve peace in the Middle East and stop terrorism.
She also describes the basic beliefs of Islam as well as some of it's history. She quotes statistics to support her statement that most Muslims do not support terrorist actions even if the terrorists defend those actions using verses from the Qu'ran.
In this section, she respectfully compares the teachings of the Qur'an with those of Christianity (rather than with the Bible--a good number of the practices and teachings she points out are Catholic doctrines rather than verses from the Bible or teachings also shared by Protestants).
Finally, she discusses what the Qur'an has to say about the rights of women versus what various modern societies have imposed on women. Jehan is a feminist and is clearly very passionate about women's rights. She describes her work to improve women's rights in Egypt.
Obviously, she describes the history she gives from an Arab viewpoint. She is generally level-headed, fair, and doesn't jump to conclusions about her subjects. She doesn't hide the mistakes that were made, but she does paint her husband and Egypt in the best possible light. Though I don't agree with all her views, she makes a lot of important points.
Overall, this book was very informative while still being easy to read and understand. I'd recommend this book to anyone interested in recent history or word affairs, especially those interested in the Middle East.

Of all the heroes I have ever had in life, there is no one I have admired more than Anwar Sadat of Egypt. Since he was assassinated, I guess the next best thing would be to hear his wife's story of Egypt. The book turns out to be a hodgepodge of history and personal memoir of Middle Eastern conflicts. It is worth reading just for the history alone.
One chapter I enjoyed in particular was the one about Egyptian women who fought for women's rights in Egypt. They include Huda Sha'arawi, Ceza Nabarawi, Amina el-Said, Nabawiyah Musa, and Suheir Qalamawi. I would certainly like to learn more about them and their struggles.
Perhaps one flaw is that Mrs. Sadat seems to have her head in the sand somewhat about radical Islam and about Islam in general. No moderate point-of-view can take away some of the more ridiculous lines in the Koran, any more than it can from the Bible.

August 5, 2011I liked this book. More people need to read it and especially the people caught in this situation. I think Mrs. Sadat's main purpose in writing this book is to promote greater understanding but also to help continue the work her husband started in the late 70's. Peace is possible but only if all the parties involved are willing to come to the table to discuss openly and fairly and set aside past differences. I found her chapter on Egyptian women to be very interesting. I had never heard about any of these women so I felt I learned something new.

The content of the book didn't really mirror its title. Johan Sadat wrote little of her hope for peace and took the opportunity to address certain historical issues as well as justified some of the actions her husband took as president at the time.
But to be fair, perhaps when talking about the Middle East, history does entail a large part of it. It was really an informative and insightful book, nevertheless.

Jehan Sadat, the widow of Andwar Sadat, reaffirms his vision for peace in the Middle East. She confirmed my belief that all good religion is about God (however you define him/her) and love. Included is an abbreviated history of the Middle East as well as insight into the woman's movement. This would be a great book discussion book.

An excellent story that recounts Mme. Sadat's political life in Egypt, her husband's political agenda, his death, their Muslim faith and how it is different from the way it is perceived by most people affected by Western journalism, and her thoughts on how to wage peace in the world. Very thought-provoking. And a reassurance that if women were in charge, there probably wouldn't be wars.

أعتبر الكتاب عاطفي نوعا ما فهي اي جيهان السادات تحاول من تعظيم إنجازات زوجها من رغم تأييدي لمبادرات الرئيس السابق أنور السادات.
يذكرني هذا الكتاب بكتاب الشاهبانو زوجة شاه إيران, فكانت دائما تحاول إظهار زوجها بأنه الرجل المثالي بدون ذكر عيوبه.
قراءة سريعة. كتاب يستحق القراءة و الاستفادة منه فهي في نهاية المطاف مُحاضرة في جامعة القاهرة سابقا وأستاذه( زائره ) في الجامعة الأميركية .

If you want a simple, easy to read description of Islam and how it differs from the fanatical definition that we are constantly being shown by the media, this is a good read. I have a special interest in Islam, but I learned a lot in this book.

Fascinating book and very well written. Sadat was privy to so many historical events, and she relays their stories beautifully. I would love to hear her speak sometime.

Read this for AAUW Adelante book group. Dr. Sadat's work as a speaker and in academia is important. This gives some good background on her husband's life and efforts toward peace.

Book tells a great lot about Sadat's philosophy and awesome insight. It also tries to show that peace today could be attained if people really want it. Good to read it.
