Witness Lee (李常受, pinyin Lǐ Chángshòu) was a Chinese Christian preacher associated with the Local Churches movement and the founder of Living Stream Ministry. He was born in the city of Yantai, Shandong Province, China, in 1905, to a Southern Baptist family. He became a Christian in 1925 after hearing the preaching of Peace Wang and later became a close coworker of Watchman Nee. Witness Lee moved to Taiwan in 1949 as the Communists were advancing in mainland China. During the 1950s, his ministry extended throughout Southeast Asia and in 1962 Lee moved to the United States, relocating the base of his ministry to Southern California. He gave his last public conference in February 1997 at the age of 91. Many of Lee's spoken messages have been published in over 400 books and translated into more than fourteen different languages. Lee's major work is Life-study of the Bible, comprising over 25,000 pages of commentary on every book of the Bible from the perspective of the believers' enjoyment and experience of God's divine life in Christ through the Holy Spirit. Lee was also the chief editor of a new translation of the Bible entitled the Recovery Version.

I read this book and then I read it again later. It is not just a biography - it is a great review of the life and the many aspects of the ministry of brother Watchman Nee. It is a very comprehensive spiritual biography of this brother, who truly is a seer of the divine revelation in the present age, and most believers today benefit from his spiritual insight and experience with the Lord. Thank You, Lord, for such a gift to Your Body!

There are quite a few biographies of brother Nee out there, but this one is outstanding, since it is written by a close co-worker (Witness Lee) and it has in view not only what Nee went through but also what God has revealed to him and has recovered through him. Some biographies are written to arouse the symphathy of the readers - especially since brother Nee was persecuted and imprisoned under the Communists in China - but this particular one strengthens our faith, encourages us to go on with the Lord, edifies us in the truth, and lays forth a pattern of a man who was completely open to God and was a seer of the divine revelation in the present age. My prayer is that there would be many like him - maybe not as capable as him, but as open and willing as he was, so that God would end this age and bring in the age of the kingdom!

A must read in order to see a pattern of a genuine, balanced believer in Christ. Watchmen Nee is an inspiration to me having read this. Besides his vast knowledge of the truth and deep experiences of God, his fine humanity comes out in this book. I was on the verge of weeping sometimes.

This book is more a defense of Witness Lee's relationship with Nee than an eyewitness biography. I found little that was not already in Angus Kinner's biography, Against the Tide. Lee quotes from Nee in a way that is sometimes embarrassing.

Here's an example: In 1936, Nee says, "Sometimes when they rejected my views, I went to a lonely hill to cry before God. At these times I wrote some hymns on bearing the cross. For the first time I experienced the significance of 'the fellowship of His sufferings'(Phil. 3:10)."--p.79. The "they" is his Christian coworkers.

Why should Nee cry? They did not reject him, they differed with him. They just rejected Nee's feelings against current Christian practices. Even the unbelieving world accepts disagreements. Not everyone at work or at church will agree with you. But for Paul "the fellowship of His sufferings" has to do with the outright hostility and public rejection of many toward Jesus and Paul. Paul and Peter disagreed. Paul never called it suffering. Paul understood that his suffering are from those outside the church that might lead to his execution. It did.

When my children were young we taught them to get along with others, even those who disagreed.

Clear view of who Watchman Nee was and how he had a clear revelation and truly lived for God. He was a legit lover of Christ and seeked only the things of Christ.

Patience is Christ.

'Whether that co-worker is wrong or not is another matter. While you are accusing your brother before me, are you like one who is bearing the cross? Are you like a lamb?' pg 20.

It is not a question of right or wrong; it is a question of whether or not one is like the bearer of the cross. In the church, right and wrong have no place; all that counts is bearing the cross and accepting its breaking. This produces the overflowing of God's life and accomplishes His will. pg 21

Watchman Nee was a very truth seeking person who acquired a lot of knowledge to understand God’s revelation very well, this book portrait the life of a truth seeking person, a martyr for the truth he has seen.
