DMP introduces new artists of the manga industry in this collection of doujinshi one-shots showcasing the US debut of Kometa Yonekura, Shiori Ikezawa, Haruki Fujimoto, and Goroh, among others!
Tell Me You Like Me by Saki Takarai: 4 stars; office romance, comedy, yaoi-a stoic but shy uke (Chouno-san) and a playful but sexy seme (Nakahara) on a date. Throw in a case of mistaken identity, a quickie, and you have a short entertaining comedy of sorts. I found Chouno-san very endearing and Nakahara's insecurity very sweet.
Perfect Age by Goroh: 3.5 stars: school romance, drama, quirky comedy, one-sided love. Quirky comedy moments balance this short sad drama.
Sakuragawa University Cheer Squad by Neri Koizumi: 2 stars; teacher/student romance, drama. A lonely man, looking for love in all the wrong places finds himself drawn to the uncle (the cheer squad captain) of one of his students.
Boyfriend by Haruki Fujimoto: 3 stars; school romance, friendship, sexual identity, drama. A boy deals with the fact that his friend is gay and in love with another student, who happens to be a mutual friend. Very touching and tender story.
Catch by Saito: 4 stars; school romance, yaoi. A boy confesses to his sempai after they are accidentally locked in their school classroom. This is one of my favorites in this anthology.
Caged Bird by Kometa Yonekura: 4 stars; school romance, yaoi, drama. A boy comes to realize what his feelings are after being confessed to and being with a fellow student. Another favorite, very sweet and sexy.
It Falls at Night by Shiori Ikesawa: 4 stars; school romance, yaoi, comedy, friendship, ghost stories. A bet and a haunted building bring a couple closer together. A very sexy and fun short story.
Dear Boys by Misora Hatori: 2.5 stars; I'm not really able to define this story. It hints at bl but it's not clearly established as the story ends on a cliffhanger. It appears to be a chapter in an ongoing novel/series; but it actually leaves you with a feeling of anticipation on what will happen next. Whether or not it is continued in the future, well we'll see.
Office Mermaid by Yomayoi Greenhouse: 3 stars; office romance, bl, comedy. A man with obsessive compulsive qualities falls for a beautiful man he compares to a fish (he's a tropical fish fanatic!) His brother and another fellow coworker spring a trap to bring the both of them together. Nice and sweet.
Tri-Color Love Song by Kazuha: 2.5 starts; school romance, bl, possible love triangle. A boy fights with the idea that his boyfriend's best friend (who is supposedly straight) might actually be in love with his boyfriend. Much like Dear Boys, this story is the beginning of a story-you only get the 1st chapter and so you are left with an interesting cliffhanger. Now it's a matter of waiting if the story is to be continued in the next volume of this anthology. Nice beginning though.
Happiness, Fun, Kindness by Midori Nishiogi: 3 stars; bl, angel/human romance. The final story in this compilation was a short and quirky comedy where a human meets and angel; while the perverted human is trying to keep playing with his angel, the angel is trying to understand why his human finds intimate physical contact so interesting. Or something along those lines.
All in all I found this anthology a nice addition to my Yaoi collection and I look forward to reading future volumes; whether it's continuing stories such as Tri-Color Love Song & Dear Boys or completely new additions.
I think I might have read this one before, which means it's fairly forgettable, but not bad overall. Lots of short stories, some in multi-part arcs, and some with no firm conclusions - maybe to be continued in Volume 2?
Reversible is essentially a series of one shots with no exceptionally bold theme. I did have trouble maing heads and tails with some of the short stories as I wasn't able to work out who was who but for the most part it really was an enjoyable read. There are a variety of stories, some chaste, some not, some sad and some happy. I almost wrote glad and then I'd have been doing horridly done poetry in its loosest form.
It's fun seeing the variety of art styles used by each individual and how they put their stories together to fit their limited space but convey their stories as well as possible considering. Some were obviously attempts to lead you to look up more of their work which was sneaky of them. To be fair, it was a success because I'm now curious about following up on them.
I'm glad I ordered this when I found it online because I was bit hesitant as anyone who has delved into anthologies will be aware, it's a gamble on the quality of the content however I was pleased with pretty much everything in the end aside from my inability to keep track of who I was meant to be in one or two stories. I'm chalking that more up to my drowsiness than anything else though. I'd reccomend the book should you be able to find it somewhere. *smiles sadly* Have fun though if you are successful though and tell me about your favourite story if you like. *waves goodbye as I flee into the night clutching my bookish feelings close to my heart*
This was an interesting anthology with a variety of artists. Some stories were better than others, IMO, and some stories seemed like the start of a new series which left them open-ended, obviously. I enjoyed the art very much and will be looking forward to more of some of these artists.
