Barbie is a fairy...mermaid? I'll admit I never saw the movie this was based on, but read this because my child wanted to share the book with me as being one of her favorites. So while the story was full of adventure and interesting twists and turns, I liked the aspect of sharing this story with her more.
My biggest complaint? I sometimes was a little confused by the storyline. I think it would have helped to have seen the movies, which is the biggest difficulty in adaptations like this. Sometimes the author assumes the reader already knows more than they do. That's a shame, because I think this might have been a nice book on it's own with a little more explanation at times.
After the winning streak of the earlier Barbie films, Mermaidia is the first point where I think the movies stumbled into lazier, cutesier storytelling; I’m not a fan of this movie’s script although, like all the old Barbie films, it is a treat for the eyes (if you subtract a couple of disturbing creature designs). In the case of the junior novelization, the visuals are actually quite interesting because they consist of concept art for almost all of the illustrations, and there are a couple of cases where I actually like the concept art better than the products that made it into the finished movie. Nori’s original design, with her flowing lavender curls, is certainly a step up from her appearance in the film, and I prefer the look of the mermaid cove in the novel, as well—rather than the tropical paradise used in the movie, this is a softer-looking location that matches the aesthetic of Fairytopia more, which gives the films a sense of continuity. That doesn’t mean the book is a particularly great reading experience—it’s one of the better-written Barbie junior novelizations, but that’s not saying very much—but seeing the evolution of the production design makes it worth saving, at least to me, as a fan of the earlier Barbie visuals.
The book I read is Mermaidia Fairytopia. It is a children's story on forklore. It is lllustrated by Daniela Burr. This book is suited for young readers in preschool and kindergarden. The book is about the faiiries in their own world. The main plot of this story is a fairy name Elina who at the beginning of th story had no wings to fly like all other fairies because one of the wicked fairies out of jealousy blew a magic spell that had killed the plants and took away the power of the fairies, therefore leaving the poor wingless Elina to fight and safe the life of Laverna's sister Enchantress. Elina fought bravely and won the battle; as a matter of fact had gotten her wings back and was able to fly like all other fairies. Eventhough he looked like the other fairies, but different because she had special powers in her that made her so brave and courageous in doing wonderful things. From the begiining to the end of the story Elina is seen to have gone through tough trials and adventures. She is also known to be friend in deed because she had done a lot of sacrifices to save the lifes of other friend fairies. At some point she traded her wings for a tail that looked like a mermaid only to save Nori. she helped but was sometimes treated badly by mean friends, she had always tried not to be selfish. At the end her goodwill, courage and love and honesty was rewarded by her carrying a magnificient crest of courage on her wings.
I choosed this book because it is easy to read and understand. It is written in black and white ink and all the words are written bold print. The pictures are all very pretty little creatures all colored bright and beautiful. The words are on one side of the page and the pictures spread on the other side of the pages. The edge of the book had lines that were in the shape of a box and the lines were colored green, blue, purple and pink. The figure on the front page easily tells what the book is about even before you read the book. The most I like about this book is it makes me remenise about my childhood, growing up in an extended family where the role of the grandparents was to take care of the little ones and not only caring, but also to teach them cultural norms and values through storytelling and role play. One of the stories I still love and remember is the story of the the three little step-sisters, two grew up to be proud, rude and wicked and the other one who's mom died living her in the care of the step-mother was humble, courageous, and caring. She lived to be happy at the end just by caring for others but the two little sisters lived to suffer throughout. At th end of the story what i learned is what goes around comes around. since then I have learned to always have enpathy for others.
E is a fairie who doesnt have wings. Her friends, who are not really nice, have a tendency to get into trouble and E sacrifices a lot for them.. to get them out of trouble. When you read between the lines it pretty much tells kids that good things do indeed happen to good people if the stick to their guns and do what they know is the right thing to do. This book is a cute kids read and teaches them to try to be good people... we need more books like that for adults..lol
