I SUCK at remembering to log in and approve friends. I'm so sorry I've made some of you wait. Please forgive my apparent chill, I swear it's not intended. Come hug me!
The idea was interesting, but the execution didn't work for me. I also didn't understand how Damien could have been lusting after Rik for 10 years and be roommates with him, and 'share' woman and it comes to a head that way? Really? Totally random. Since I didn't see the friendship before this evening, I don't know how they interacted with each other before, but it wasn't loving/sexy/hot or anything else for me! It was aggresive which is ok, but more like a one upmanship and fighting. I guess vamp and were/human might be like that, but they have been friends for 10 years..and then the constant addition of woman to the mix, didn't add anything for me. I felt like it was trying to be too much, a romance, a mystery, a paranormal suspense ..none of it worked for me. Then the medical/lab work sort of got boring and then I didn't quite understand the 'solution'. And the ending left me scratching my head? is this the beginning of a series? Because 'The Keeper' didn't really solve much that I could tell.
Man, the premise of this book had so much promise. It was not delivered. Two prophecies, werwolves, vampires, saving a race...and what we got was all sex, bad dialog, no real world building and a weird ending that ended too fast to mean anything.
There is very little here to pick at, to dislike, to shake my head at.
It's a vampire/were story. But, wonderfully, Watts puts a beautiful spin on it. Makes it original, and in vampire fiction, originality is hard to come by. I was so pleased to read she had completed writing the second book in the series, because I was terribly disappointed to think it would end where it did. I'm actually excited for the next one.
Rik is the prophet of the vampires and werewolves. It's said he will figure out how to unite the two species as well as save the dying race of vampires. He's a well-rounded character, as is his romantic interest, Damien.
Damien, as you can imagine, is the vampire.
It's fast paced, quick, and really well written. There's sex, boy, is there sex, but it fits perfectly in with the pace of the story. I was sufficiently impressed, folks, and I highly, highly recommend the book.
Hmmm. This was a tough one. The concept was cool and the story line itself was interesting, but I had a hard time connecting with the characters. They were friends for years, but we never saw them as friends to see the chemistry between them prior to the initial hook up. It felt like it started a chapter or 2 late. As far as the sex between them, while it was hot, I couldn't figure out if it was true emotion or circumstance making them work, so it felt off. The scientific talk was over my head sometimes, but not enough to throw me out of the story. I felt like the book was ended too quick. I would like to know more about where the story could go.
It wasn't clear what Rik was supposed to "deliver" the vampires and werewolves from till later in the book. So it was hard to see what the problem from the prophecy was. I felt that the book could have used another 30 - 50 pages. Various scenes in the book would have read a little better if they were more descriptive. All the plot points were presented nicely, but some of them felt a little rushed and glossed over with too little detail.
Considering how the book ended, I was originally going to have a little snit because the overall story was not wrapped up in any way. The immediate plot points yes, but the overall story arc was way far from finished. And if she'd have let it stand like this, then I would have probably given this book a 2 or 3, just because there was so many unresolved or new plot points in the end. But I read another review and the reviewer said there's going to be a second book. So no snit.
I really liked that both characters were aggressive alpha males, always fighting to top. That was sexy. I also liked that once they hooked up, that didn't change. In most books with two alphas locking horns, one winds up backing down and becoming submissive. I didn't see that here.
The storyline was good, not the cookie-cutter standard plot line for m/m books.
I don't know any more about virology or gene therapy than the average educated person, so I don't know how plausible the genetic stuff in the book was. But the way it was written made it sound plausible enough that I had no trouble going with it. In some stories the science is so ridiculous that it's just impossible to go along with the explanation.
The sex was hot. :) Could have done with less girly bits, but that's just me.

The plot is kind of a mess, but it definitely isn't the cliched vamp/were tale. Lots of interesting ideas here. And there are no deficits in the hot chemistry and sex departments. So, a fun although imperfect read.
