What happens to a small town when all modern conveniences disappear?
EMP, post-apocalypse, Pacific Northwest.
I liked the writing in this book better than the first! The flow was smoother, and the characters more developed. In book one, we met Cass as she travels south of Portland to the small town where her family lives. This book has Charlie, Cass’ younger sister, and their grandmother, Ruby.
There are also some new characters. Javier and girlfriend, Harper. Javier is in the national guard. This story is told mostly in dual POV, alternating between Charlie and Harper.
“Javier, what’s going on? My car wouldn’t start, and there’s no cell service.”
His eyes widened as he met Harper’s gaze, pausing for several seconds in thought. “It’s something big, babe.” He paused again. “Word is Portland saw some planes go down. Sounds like there was an attack.”
A little disappointed at the mustache twirling bad guys.
This jumps onto new characters, Cass’ younger sister (from the previous book) and a nurse who works at the local hospital.
No one knows why the power went out, cutting them off from the rest of the world but a few speculate that it may point towards a terrorist attack which will explain the planes falling out of the sky, but no one can explain why vehicles grounded to a halt.
These are quick reads ( four hundred pages or so) which is why I’m breezing through them, plus it’s so easy to get caught up in the storyline time ceases to exist.
In Book 1, we met Cass and her journey (that isn't over) to get to her grandma from Portland. Now in Book 2, we meet Ruby, her grandma and Charlie, her little sister. We see the events happen to them in parallel to them happening to Cass.
Things are strange in Meadowview, even without the no power thing. This was an interesting read, and I can't wait to see where it goes in Book 3. That last chapter too.... hmmm Like things aren't weird enough. HA!
I have been a lover of Sam J Fires's books for quite awhile and this series has only made that love stronger. The characters are relatable, the events are 'scary', but ya know, the world is a little scary right now anyways. Have a read, you won't regret going on this journey, but bring a blanket, it's a COLD winter right now.
As always an intriguing book that will have you gripped trying to find out what happens next. Technology is down, power is out. How will people manage. Danger and intrigue to keep you reading.
The sister of Cass makes an appearance, like Cass she is totally confused by the weather extremes. This story is totally believable and will engage you. I'm loving this series.
This seems extremely similar to the Edge of Collapse series by Kyla Stone. The first book focuses on a military guy and a woman with a dog, who are being tracked by someone with a grudge. Same as EoC. The second book has a teenager and her grandmother who are familiar with the prepper lifestyle. Same as EoC. The country comes to a halt because of an EMP. Same as EoC. There’s a sinister person who is determined to be the leader now that everything is in chaos. Same as EoC.
Grip of Darkness is the second book in the End of Days series by Sam J Fires. Grip of Darkness tells eighteen-year-old Charlie Drew's story. Charlie is the younger sister of Cassandra Drews whose story was told in book one Grip of Fear.
Charlie like her sister Cass lived in their parent's compound until the day came when they walked out leaving their parents and the compound behind. Both girls called their grandmother Ruby to come and get them. Cass hated leaving her little sister and parents behind. Cass made her decision to leave a few years before her sister Charlie as she was older.
When the power went out Charlie tried to do what she could for the folks in her neighborhood going around and checking on them. Charlie has a great big heart and liked helping others. On her first trip out to check on the neighbors, Charlie found one of their neighbors dead. It was assumed that she died of a heart attack.
Grip of Darkness tells the stories of all the people in Charlie’s neighborhood and surrounding town. It takes place in the first hours or maybe even days when the power went out. In the beginning, everyone was quite cordial but things would change after a while if the power didn’t come back on. The longer the power stays off the more afraid the people will become.
Food and supplies will start to run out when no one would be coming to bring more with all the vehicles and electronic devices not working as well. The people will start to fear for their safety. The evil will come out in droves.
I am afraid that the worst is yet to come and I am looking forward to that worse in the next book of the End of Days series. I am afraid that Grip of Fear and Grip of Darkness is just the beginning for Charlie and Cassandra. I am afraid that Grip of Fear and Grip of Darkness just gave us a small glimpse into Charlie and Cassandra’s world.
I highly recommend Grip of Darkness as well to all post-apocalyptic fans! Grab your copy of Grip of Darkness today for another great introduction to a brand new world!
Up until the end of this book, I had toyed with many theories. None of which seems like what may now be happening. Guess I'll read the next book in the series.
Oh lord how can u call this an apocalyptic book.. This book was a never ending, slow as malaise. Took my days to get through this book. Like I said before if I bought this book, book by book, I wouldn’t continue reading it but I bought all in one book and I am dragging ass trying to the will to open it and continue reading this not so Apocalyptic book…
What can I say about this number two book in the End of Day series? I loved it. It was slightly different in that it started at the beginning where the apocalypse hadn't happened yet, we have different characters and it's a new area too. It really is a read all at once book, there is no way I could have put it down. Every page flowed through and getting to know the new characters kept me engrossed as well. I can't wait for the next instalment the series Grip of Terror which is out in July.
Homeschooled - but now living with her grandmother The world is falling apart — and she tries her best to help her grandmother and all the people in their neighbourhood. . . . . a great part two to this series. Totally loved it - and anxious for the next book!!! I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All thoughts and comments are my own.
A really excellent second book in this exciting, new, end of the world EMP series! I really enjoyed it all, the characters development as well as the plot! Good ideas & a satisfying read! I do recommend! I can not wait for the next part!!
Grip of Darkness starts showing the true natue the a small town of Meadowview. People's true nature starts to show and is not always good. With NO information about what has happened or yet to come people start thinking. The "haves" want more and the "have nots" are worried as to what more trouble is around the corner. So few are prepared for what is about to come. Great Book Two. I can hardley wait for what is yet to come.
Can this series get any better? I'm loving all the new characters and can't wait to see what role they play as the story unfolds. Another sure fire winner from a great author.
As I began this book, I realised I’d missed the prequel, Surviving Chaos. As with the previous series, Murder and Mayhem, the first book is the prequel, followed by book one.
I wasn’t hindered in anyway not knowing the back story of Cassie, her ex Nathan, and how the end of the world happened for them. It would have been nice to get it first, but it can be read later.
I filly expected to be reading about Cassie and Issac from the first book and their continuing journey. Instead, it was the story of her younger sister, Charlie. I was disappointed at first, but soon got into the story, and quickly became engrossed.
I’m really enjoying the series. It well written and the only bit I didn’t like was the freezing snow!
Series, and apocalyptic lovers will get a kick from this. It will also appeal to those who like me, love shorter reads.
Grip of Darkness End of Days #2 Post-apocalyptic Sam J. Fires ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
This book was slightly different to the previous book. Instead of following characters on their journey to find family and answers etc, this book focused on the town of Meadowview and its residents. It was nice to meet the new characters and have their connections to other characters be revealed slowly.
The pacing was ok but it was a little slow at times.
It's never occurred to me how an EMP would affect anyone with a pacemaker or medical equipment before and this series has done a good job of exploring that and the consequences so far.
The last chapter from a different POV was interesting. It made the ending a lot more tense and I think the character involved has some sinister intentions.
Grip of Darkness: A Post-Apocalyptic EMP Survival Thriller (End of Days Book 2) , my third read from author Sam J. Fires . A well-written, entertaining read, 121-pages in length. We switch settings & primary characters going from Cass to her sister Charlie & Ruby. “I received a free Kindle copy of this book back in April and am voluntarily leaving a review." The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. Next up Grip of Terror : A Post-Apocalyptic EMP Survival Thriller (End of Days Book 3). (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).
This is a wonderful addition to this thrilling series! Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start. Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable. Great suspense and action with wonderful world building that adds so much to the story. Such a thrilling read that I couldn't put it down. Can't wait to read more of these. Recommend reading.
I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.
This story has believeable characters and a credible storyline with plenty of details and historical data about the characters and the town involved. Plenty of twists and turns and believable reactions from the people as a whole . A change from the zombie apocalypse books that seem to abound at present, I must admit to reading quite a few of them since retiring, and this makes a welcome change can't waiat for the next in the series.
Grip of Darkness introduces us to new characters, mainly Cass's sister, Charlie and their grandma Ruby. Same circumstances, diifferent place, different scenarios. How will the community survive without power and food supplies? Will being raised as a prepper, help Charlie and Ruby deal with the after effects of the EMP? Well written with fleshed out characters. Looking forward to reading the next episode. I received a complimentary copy and voluntarily leave an honest review.
I love an end of civilization type story. But they are suppose to be in a very small town. Everyone keeps saying everyone knows each other and all their business, yet tons of people keep asking who so and so is or have no idea what their back story is. I mean, it doesn't make sense that people that have been in the town for years wouldn't recognize the Chief of Police son, who has lived in this small town since he was a young child.
The peepers may have gotten it right, the end is near!
Power blackout, phones and cars not working and the damage appears to be statewide. Oregon is in trouble and one small town is already divided by the locals who have lived there for generations and the newcomers and tourists now isolated in the town. Selfish personalities are also striving for control and trying to gain power in the chaos.
We meet Cass’ younger sister in this one. She lives with their grandma Ruby. There seems to be lots of history with the town and the preppers outside of town. Drama is unfolding at the local hospital with Harper and her boyfriend who is part of the National Guard. The danger is real as warning signs for the power outage being more than the storm and we are left finding out about a cult who have the town in their sights. On to the next one!
This book like the first book lacks a clear plot line. The characters are okay but not great. There are things that don’t fit the characters as he’s developed them. Like the main character and her grandma with decades of prepped experience making a fire out of freshly dropped branches! Come on! Seriously? How could they think that would work?
This book is about a different set of characters than Cass and Isaac. I'm sure these characters will come around and join with Cass and Isaac's story, but I was more interested in Cass and Isaac's story. I believe the next book gets the story focused back on them. So, I'm off to read the next book to see how this all plays out.
This was a continuation of ‘Grip of Fear’, the chaos and danger escalated, continuously. Author does a good job of showing all different sorts of people in different walks of life and how they fare and handle the absolutely worst-case scenario. It’s interesting and feels real.
4 stars.
Audio: Overall the narrator does a good job and the sound quality is decent.
I read this book in just a few hours. I liked how the author introduced us to the people of Meadowview. The story flowed nicely and I am looking forward to finding out how the people deal with the challenges that lay ahead. I liked the fact that there was no foul language in the story.
After the intense, gripping start to the series in book one, Grip of Darkness fell flat for me. With a completely new set of characters, Cass and Isaac were noticeably absent, and I just couldn’t connect with Charlie or Harper. I pushed through knowing book three would return to the original characters, and I’m definitely eager to get back to their story.
