Current Anthology #1

Current: An Anthology for Jackson, Mississippi

Rate this book
Jackson, MS is a city full of history and culture. It's also a city suffering from local, state, and national neglect.

In August 2022 when newspapers announced that the city had issued a boil order for the city's water, many were reminded of Flint, Michigan, and other working class, primarily Black cities around the country who have been left without a vital service for days, weeks, months, and years.

Safe drinking water is a human right.

The rising crises around water are worrying, and it is easy to be overwhelmed by so many concurrent crises. However, the desensitization of many to the pain and suffering of Black people spurred the creation of the CURRENT ANTHOLOGY.

I read Alpha, Lover, Friend by Dria Andersen. Black love. Lion shifters. Friends to lovers which is not my jam but I really liked the way she handled them being lifelong friends as well as mates. Dealing with the death of a parent. And I loved the arc with his ex.

A great mix

I enjoyed this collection of stories, namely Dria Andersen's, since it was my first pleasurable paranormal reading experience. More importantly I was glad to help such a great cause. I already have volume two.

tbh, I only read two books in the anthology and those two are what my 4 stars are based on.

This is the first of a pair of short story romance collections created to raise money for the people of Jackson, Mississippi, to have access to clean drinking water and reproductive services. Human rights, as it were.

PENETRATION TESTING by A. H. Cunningham - 3 stars. Emile and Keyiara transform their friendship to romance, with family help. I liked how important communication was to their relationship.

SANCTUARY by Meka James - 2 stars. A modern Masquerade ball but with all Sapphic participants. It felt unfinished, like this was the beginning of a book, not a self contained story.

ALPHA, LOVER, FRIEND by Dria Andersen - 3 stars. A different shifter, fated mates universe, but I liked it.

COMING HOME by Karmen Lee - 3 stars. A Sapphic second chance at love between childhood friends. It's very sweet.

LIKE I LOVE YOU by Jayce Ellis - 5 stars. This is an excellent novella of gay best friends to forever loves, with some serious angst. You can tell these characters are adjacent to a previous story, but you don't feel like you are missing anything essential. All the beats are perfect.

DESSERT FOR THREE by Nicole Falls - 3.5 stars. This is a fun polyamorous romp with a happy for now ending.

OVERALL RATING: 3.5 stars

PENETRATION TESTING by A. H. Cunningham - 2 stars
- didn’t have time to connect with the characters and relationship very well.

SANCTUARY by Meka James - 5 stars
- loved this erotic short story. loved that it didn’t try to force a whole romance but let it be a “what might happen?” type ending after the nighttime orgy.

ALPHA, LOVER, FRIEND by Dria Andersen - 4 stars
- liked that it was a friends-to-lovers story and didn’t try to force in a new romance. also thought the paranormal worldbuilding was pretty well balanced for a short—easy enough to follow and understand.

COMING HOME by Karmen Lee - 1 star
- the order of events in this story is nonsensical. why is tysha suddenly bringing up high school when it’s not relevant to the moment at hand, which is a discussion about the implosion of their adult relationship? and it’s not clearly explained when coming home is such an issue for her, despite it being vaguely brought up multiple times, or why she was “voted most likely to go to juvie.” this particular story doesn’t have enough details to make sense in this format—it needs to be a longer story that can be fleshed out better. this story in particular could’ve also used a bit more editing.

LIKE I LOVE YOU by Jayce Ellis - 4 stars
- this story was super cute. the relationship transition was a little abrupt even for a short story, and i probably would’ve enjoyed this even more as a full length, but it was an enjoyable read overall.

DESSERT FOR THREE by Nicole Falls - 3 stars
- pretty average short for this anthology—not the best, not the worst. and the pet names on practically every line of dialogue was a bit much.
