What about my shredder is an autobiography written by The Smallest One (often referred to also as ‘duck’ or, incorrectly, as ‘David’). It details his life and relationship to his most precious of items, his personal home shredder. Throughout the novella, Smallest One showcases how you don’t need fancy words and metaphors to effectively tell a story.
It opens with the simple phrase ‘what about my shreeeddddddderrrrrrrr’, which instantly hits you with the extent of Smallest One’s love for his home office equipment. This further emphasised by follow up phrase ‘My personal shredddderrrrr’. The fact that the author refers to it as a ‘personal’ shredder suggests that he sees it in more than just a practical item, and more like a friend. A part of the clump.
The further through the book you progress, the more the tone shifts from one full of passionate warmth, to a desperate longing. ‘What about my shreddddder?’ where is the shredder? Why is the shredder? It gives the reader the lesson that Smallest One and shredder are one in the same; attempting to separate them is a crime. The pain of this delicately illustrated within the simple phrases. While the other one may never see him as a friend, the shredder is always there, always near and ready to shred, with all the power of an overzealous rock guitarist. You are left with the gut-wrenching feeling of The Smallest One’s distress at the thought of having the shredder ripped away, not allowed to be included in the electricity shenanigans; their future seeming as shredded as the paper the personal shredder consumes.
As the book draws to a close, the reader understands the deep relationship the two share. Very few can hope to find as deep a connection with any electronic equipment, especially not the unreliability of a wifi router. They are dependent on one another; shredder needs Smallest One in order to be plugged in, and fed with no-longer needed documents, while Smallest One needs shredder for his business, private business.
In conclusion, The Smallest one demonstrates a skilful way of expressing to the reader the depth and breadth of ‘human’ emotion through simple repetition. It will leave you in laughter one minute, tears then next, and then a strange combination of tears and laughter that will have you questioning why you have that strong a reaction to a text about shredders? What time is it? Who are you? But that’s the power of this book. One can only hope that one day we may know the Shredder’s side. Does it have as much of a passion for Smallest One? Or, given the opportunity, would it power itself with batteries and flee. However, like the content of that book and what exactly The Smallest One planned to do with that rock, we might never know the answer.

If you don’t watch “Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared,” don’t read this book. If you DO watch DHMIS, you’ll understand why it’s 5-stars.

Such a fantastic book to start off my year. It begins and ends with such a philosophical question that sends you into a whirlwind of contemplations and discussions: "What about my shredder?"

Filled with absolutely turbulent highs and lows, twists and turns you'd never expect. It will make you laugh. It will make you cry. It will most definitely linger in your mind for months and years to come. Duck Guy did such a fantastic job with this, I'd even go as far to say this is his best novel yet.

Perhaps someday, we'll find the answer to such an existential and life changing question. But today is not that day.

Inspiring and breathtaking. I can't believe we've never heard this side from Duck Guy. It gives great insight into his life and his relationship with his personal shredder. It's such an emotional and gut-wrenching story that left me near tears. It's so heartwarming to read.

My favorite line in the whole book was "What about my shreddeeeeeeeeer?" I almost cried when I read it.

Duck Guy is basically just me and I didn't realize that we were so similar. It makes me wonder why there's so little reviews about this book. I would recommend it to anyone who's willing to read this.

It’s a truly moving piece about a duck and query for electronical devices. The first few chapters were a little tricky to push through but after a good sitting it really gets the ball rolling. It’s beautiful, it’s touching, it’s creative and keeps you thinking.
