The Walls We Break

Walls.

They're immovable, resilient. Meant to keep things out and most the time they keep nearly everything out, except me.

I'm the "Mike". The middle linebacker for the Seattle Crusaders. It's my job to break through anything in my path and make it out the other side and I'm damn good at it too.

Until I meet Vi Nielson. A strong, hardworking, drop dead sexy single mom to an adorable little boy. I fell hard, fast. The problem? She has the most indestructible walls that I've ever encountered with no interest in dropping them. There's no turning back for me now.

I know what I want and what I want is her. I'll do whatever it takes to make her mine because make no mistake, Vi Nielson is mine.

This story would have been perfect and sweet, had the trauma at the end been left out. It was completely ott and painful to witness.

Contemporary, m/f sports romance
Single mom to a 4-yr old
NFL football
A perfect hero with big secrets
Works as a standalone

I devoured this book!

It’s hard to put my thoughts about this one into words. I’m speechless and want to yell at everyone to GRAB it and read it immediately. It’s a brilliant and beautiful story about the lengths people will go to for the ones they love. My emotions are all over the place. What a roller coaster!!!!

Declan has been traded to the Seattle Crusaders from his hometown NFL team in Tennessee and immediately falls for single mom, Vi. Vi is fiercely devoted to her young son, Tucker, and will do anything to protect him. She’s been hurt in the past and her walls are up. Once she meets the persistent and caring Declan, she can't help but let him in, even if they are both holding back some things.

Declan is a yummy cinnamon roll with those OTT possessive vibes that I can’t avoid falling for. This football player did more than make me swoon, he made my heart melt.

Declan and Vi’s story is beautifully heartbreaking. I have to stop here so I don’t give anything away.

This one is full of sweet and touching moments, but some topics may be triggering. Pay attention to trigger warnings.

• Single mom
• Football player
• He falls first
• Insta-love (please don’t let this scare you off)
• Touch her and die
• HEA
• Grab the tissues!!! (I cried)

She does it again!!
This books MMC is the SWEET to the loyalties we breaks SPICY.
Declan is sweet, gentle, kind, and swoony (but wait! He’s also Damn hot, don’t worry). He sets his sights on Vi and doesn’t take her rejection seriously; he just keeps pursuing her until those walls start to break.
At first I thought this was going to just be that; a sweet, swoony relationship. It’s a single mom trope and the way Declan and Tucker connect is absolutely heartwarming. Declan is SO good with him. But then in true Katelyn fashion, she blindsided me and took the story in a whole other direction. All of a sudden, life wasn’t so sweet and perfect anymore. I was hanging on by my teeth just to see if they could make it through the deep waters and stay together. Overall I would give it 4.5 stars- the writing was so well done, and I love not guessing every result of the plot. Loved Declan but no one will ever knock Sebastian out of top spot.

Some spoilers ahead in TW…..

This story contains heart wrenching moments of domestic abuse, attempted sexual abuse, a horrifying custody battle, and some graphic details (not too many).

Also contains sexually explicit scenes.

did I stay up til 2am when I knew I had to wake up at 6am to finish this book? yes

did I think the ending third was way over the top and out of place? also yes

did I thoroughly enjoy how much of a cinnamon roll the mmc was? DEF.

FMC is a single mom working two jobs. One day, a man comes into the diner just before closing. He orders a pie, and the two of them connect. He asks her out, she rejects him, but that doesn't dissuade him at all. **NOT IN A RED FLAG WAY BTW LOL. He just doesn't take the rejection to heart** In comes his determination to get to know her and break her walls down.

This was so incredibly sweet and swoony! There are some questionable choices and reactions in here but overall I ADORED this book. It was paced well, just enough angst to be compelling, and enough romance to make my heart sing.

The questionable bits are keeping this from a five star but still really liked this one!

DNFed at 47%, I just kept reading to see what happened with Tucker’s dad but even that spark of curiosity fizzled out by the time Mindi showed up.

And Declan. Really? Are we judging someone for marrying a wife who likes shoes, Declan? Shoes are wiping an NFL player’s bank account? We do not like hints of misogyny, my friend.

Also, converse do not equate quirky, thank you very much. And how did “Keep it. The company was well worth it.” equate to being called a prostitute? The context was clear. The situation was obvious. I kinda hate to say it, but Vi’s narration was honestly a teeny bit of a drag to get through.

Also, this lady sets up a date with a guy who’s practically stalking her and won’t take no for an answer, and she gives him the NUMBER OF HER APARTMENT on their FIRST DATE. WHERE HER KID LIVES. She doesn’t even know his last name! I don’t care if that’s literally brought up in the next minute. The point still stands.

Icks:
“Most women love football players.” Except for our heroine because she Is Not Like Other Girls.
“but I’ve dated my fair share of women, all who didn’t take much more than a few smiles and compliments to have them practically begging me to take them home. Not Vi, though.” Not Other Girls, Part 2

Thank you Katelyn Taylor for allowing me to read an ARC of The Walls We Break (Alphaletes Book 2). This is my honest and voluntary review.

This book features Declan Daniels, NFL Linebacker & southern gentlemen, who just signed with a team in Seattle after having only played in Knoxville. He’s playing in Seattle with a couple of teammates you may remember from ‘Loyalties’ i.e. Seb and Slater (Travis us in here too, but he plays for another team). One day, on Declan’s birthday, he stops into a local diner late at night for pie for his birthday. The only other person in the diner was the waitress, Vi Nielsen. Vi is a single mom and dismisses Declan’s attempts to ask her on a date. But, he’s persistent and he slowly starts to break down her walls and she finally agrees after 4-5 attempts to go on a date with him.

Declan is an absolute KING among men and treats Vi like a goddess. Their chemistry is off the charts. Declan has a dirty mouth and he sure knows how to use it - “Daddy Declan” sure has a nice ring to it 😮‍💨😉

When Declan meets her son, Tucker, that just about seals the deal. The relationship between Tucker and Declan is literally the sweetest thing and had me squealing at their interactions. Each time Declan calls Tucker “big man” and Tucker looks up at him adoringly, it’s just the best!

This book has some of the best side characters as well! Grandma Judy, an older woman who lives across the hall from Vi and Tucker who’s like an adopted grandma to them. Mindi, VI’s best friend, who has no filter and says whatever comes to her mind but you can’t help but love her. Suzannah and Rodney Daniels, Declan’s parents, who are so supportive of their son and bring that southern hospitality with them everywhere they do. And of course, most of Declan’s teammates (except Chad 🤬) bring a lot of the story as well.

TW’s - Of course it can’t all be sunshine and rainbows though. This book speaks of domestic violence, attempted assault and a bitter custody battle. All of these things are hard to read, but they brought so much depth to the story that I couldn’t stop reading to find out what was going to happen next!

Will Declan and Vi get their HEA? Will Tuck get the Daddy he has been asking about? You’ll have to read to find out exactly what happens - just be prepared to have your heart ripped out and pieces back together a few times…but there’s no one better to do it than this swoony southern gentlemen Declan Daniels with that dirty mouth of his!

This book was exactly what I needed. While also being exactly what I wasn’t expecting when I picked it up. The first book in the series was set in college and I assumed this one would be too. But once I picked it up, I didn’t care at all that it wasn’t set in college because I was so busy falling for these characters and waiting for the drama bombs to start dropping.

From the first page I was in and needing to know exactly what had happened to get Vi to that point. Then we jump to the first chapter and Declan was beyond perfect, and an idiot, at the same time, but in all the right ways and for all the right reasons and I just couldn’t get enough of him. Their relationship happened so organically and realistically and just smoothly but with so many little strings left dangling that I couldn’t put it down. I had so many theories of how things were going to be revealed and what was going to be the fallout of each revelation.

We got the perfect amount of the OG characters and a great introduction to some new characters. But I was so busy obsessing over Vi and Declan and how perfectly they handled everything involving Tucker. I had all the feels while reading this, but the main one was just pure swoon over Declan. I am off to add the next one to my kindle. Toodles

Katelyn outdid herself with her exquisitely heartbreaking story about learning to love again.. We are introduced to Vi Nielson, a single mother of the cutest little boy ever, Tucker. Vi has made every effort to avoid contact with the football industry, and especially football players, as a result of her abusive past. Now juggling two jobs and being a full time mommy, Vi has put aside her dating life and has focused only Tucker. Working late at the diner, she wasn't expecting to meet the hottest man entering this late at night. The drool worthy man who’s about to change her life.

Declan Daniels, quarterback of the Seattle crusaders doesn’t want anyone recognizing him or wanting to be with him just because of who he is. When he walks in to a diner and sees the most beautiful woman ever he decides to hide his true identity. As their relationship grows, and walls begin to be torn out, Declan knows he must come clean to Vi.

Will everything be okay once she knows who he really is? Or did Katelyn give us another plot twist? Be ready for some sexy dirty talk and some very hot scenes! Declan’s dirty talk was absolutely everything! He’s got the best combination of sweet with just the perfect amount of possessiveness. I can honestly say he might just be my favorite from this series!! I won’t give any more away but just do yourself a favor and read this asap!

Fav quote : “That’s so fucking hot, I love the idea of someone coming in here and seeing me claim what’s mine. Because you are, Vi Nielson. All. Fucking. Mine.”

4.5 ✨for Vi lol
5 ⭐️ and beyond for Declan 💗💗💗

Declan is swoon worthy.🫠

I honestly fell in love with him. Vi definitely makes him work for it but he knows she’s worth everything. The way he treats Vi and her son I can’t even.

Vi is a bad a** single mom. Who hates football okay so she doesn’t technically hate football but football players. So when she meets his guy at the dinner she’s working at and starts feeling things she gets a little scared. But she realizes how good Declan is for her and her son.

“I’d run to the end of the earth for you, baby.”

Katelyn really did an amazing job with this book.🤍

🖤 Sports romance

💙 Single mama

🖤 He falls first

💙 Strong FMC

🖤 Touch her and you 💀

💙 Declan – Vi – (Tucker)

I knew.. I KNEW this book was going to tear me apart. But it also put me back together again.

I know, I say it for all of Katelyn’s books, but can you blame me??? HELLO. Her books are phenomenal.

💐 Vi- Badass single mama working to give her baby the world. I love how she is portrayed, how she fought for herself and her son. She is not your typical FMC, she is not very “well off” but she provides and gives her baby everything. Her story is so heartbreaking but such an eye opening one to real issues in the world.
She is closed off but knows that there is something special when Dec walks into the diner she is working.

🏈 Declan- NFL player, southern gentleman, SWEETHEART, teddy bear, caring, hunk of a man. The way he wore his emotions on his sleeve, was so open and honest, and vulnerable. Shew. SWOON. He is also not your typical MMC, he is opposite of most, falls first, caring and the way he steps into that Daddy role effortlessly. YES PLEASE.

🥞 Tucker- Vi’s son is this adorable, mickey mouse loving mama’s boy. I connect with him because I too love a good stack of pancakes, especially chocolate chip.

Their story. 🥹

Where. Do. I. Start.

The way it just fell into place so seamlessly so quick had me on the edge of my seat. But Declan was hiding a big part of himself and Vi was keeping her past a secret too. I knew deep down that I was about to get my heart shattered in some way. But I kept on going and trying to convince myself that it wouldn’t happen, that they would continue to be this perfect little blended family. I knew better. I really did.

When the twist came I literally had to put my kindle down and stare at the wall for a moment because I was actually like wait.. what? 😦 No. No way I read that right. Shit. I DID read it right.

I was mad. Sad. Shocked. You name it I experienced it. The way this book ended was perfect. I mean absolute perfection. We had to go through the darkness, the really hard stuff, the rock bottom of situations but it was worth it in the end.

If you want to read Declan & Vi’s story pre-order your copy today. It releases on February 6th!

Thank you, Katelyn, for allowing me to read & review an ARC of The Walls We Break I will forever support you. Your books have really helped me through some difficult times, and I cannot thank you enough. I am so glad I found you!

This was so beautiful, it's hard to put into words.

If you are new to my reviews you'll notice I am 1. Not a Sports Romance Person 2. Not a Sappy romance person 3. Hate the single mom trope. 4. I never cry in books. 5. I rarely read books with a southern character because I'm southern and well... yeah.. not normally going to happen. For more me: Instagram.

Do you know what Katelyn did here, she basically said "hold my drink and watch this."

description

I adore this book and she made me love a book that would usually be absolutely not for me. I loved Loyalties and so, of course, I wanted to continue but when I saw the tropes I was hesitant. Do not let that get in the way of a fantastic story!

This story is so different from Loyalties and that is a relief because while you want them to all go together, you will also get bored reading the same story repeatedly. She made this a standalone worth its weight. You can read this story without reading Loyalties if you wish and nothing will be missed. She gives just enough information without ruining the first book for the characters.

She even made me love a cinnamon roll MC, not that he is complete without teeth because he absolutely has some. I love Declan. When it comes to Vi, honestly, I don't know if I have ever read an FMC that I truly truly love and feel like she is me in a fictional format. But here we are.

The spice I would say is not as much as Loyalties HOWEVER this is a perfect case of quality over quantity!! There is spice and it is nice (yes I made a rhyme).

There is a part that made me sob like a baby at 2 am and let me tell you there are only two other books in this world that have made me cry as of now. This book is now number three. I loved the sappiness of it, I loved the heartbreak and I just love this book.

I finished reading and this was pretty much my expression:

“You are everything. Absolutely fucking everything. You are mine now, forever. You got it? “

Vi is a single mum working two jobs to support her family. It’s been many years since she let another man in on her life. The walls start to crack when a guy named Declan walks into the diner just before closing one night.

What a book! I enjoyed the first book in the series but loved this second book so much more. The first book is set in college but this one isn’t and I appreciated that. It’s set many years later when they’re drafted to football teams.
Starting with Vi who’s 24 she is a strong FMC for what she has been through in her past and she is such a good mother to Tucker. That women deserves the world. Declan 27 is incredibly thoughtful, patient and persistent. This man treats his woman like a queen that she is and don’t get me started on the interactions with her son Tucker who is 4. Cutest and one of my favourite fictional kids for sure. Every side character involved was fantastic and Judy gets a shout-out as she had me laughing.

The storyline was brilliant and the plot twists at the end got me and I was shocked. My heart in the last 20% was racing and I even shed a few tears as I felt for the characters.

Looking forward to reading the next book!

I am kicking myself for not picking this up sooner! I loved this single mom romance so much!

This story follows Vi and Declan. Vi is a single mom and working two jobs to keep afloat. One evening, Declan comes into the diner she’s working at and after the most heartwarming encounter, he is determined to win her over.

This romance so swoony and I couldn’t stop smiling and kicking my feet. Towards the middle-end of the book, we get to some really emotional scenes but seeing how these two navigated it together was so beautiful. These two are soulmates!

I can’t recommend this enough!

i would def rate this book a lot higher if they got together later or there was more tension/angst/growing of their relationship or maybe his football career before they actually got together. because the author is def capable of it based on the last 1/4 of the book. that was my favorite part by far and actually had my heart ripping out of my chest. this book is so cute but it’s a bit too long for its story progression in my opinion.

This book… putting my thoughts and feelings into a review has been so hard.

I really enjoyed it. And when a book provokes emotions in you, that’s when you know it’s good, right?

I read the content warnings, I was prepared.. and yet I wasn’t.

Declan is such a sweet dumbass, haha. He’s swoony and sweet and just wants a chance… but god- he made me so mad at some points.

Vi is such a strong FMC. Doing whatever is necessary to care for her son. But she also made me mad. Her walls are so tall, and I get it to an extent, but lumping all football players into one category and writing them ALL off based on a past experience is…. Extreme. I get why Declan went about things the way he did- to an extent. At some point his omission went way too far, and I was over it. This is where the book lost a star for me.

The writing is well done and the story is great. It’s emotional and heartbreaking, sweet, but real… and at some points very hard to read.

I wish as a reader we got to see a little more of the resolution and healing. It felt a little rushed and I just wanted a tiny bit more.

I loved Declan and Vi's story. Their story is an emotional rollercoaster, but their love was amazing to read. The strength, fight, and determination that they had for each other to be together was heartwarming.

Everyone who played a part in their story made it so much better. Little Tucker was adorable, and Grandma Judy was hilarious. Mindi was a fierce best friend, and I loved reading more about Seb, Erica, Slater, and Trevor. I can't wait to see who we will see in the next book!

DNF at 80%. I tried, I really tried to get through it but couldn’t. Thinly veiled misogyny? Check. Not like other girls trope? Check. Horribly written and inconsistent child? Check. Incredibly inaccurate depiction of being a single mother? Check. Boring writing style? Check. I spent the entire time being angry at the book before deciding it wasn’t worth the effort to finish

DNF at 4%. FMC is a quirky not like other girls stereotype and I’m willing to bet we’re meant to see her as “sassy” because she puts her hands on her hips and says dumb one liners. MMC is misogynist and annoying. Dialogue is unrealistic and annoying.

The way I feel about Vi as a human and as a mom is unreal. If I was into girls I would be into Vi. She is such an amazing mom and all around strong person. I love the way she holds herself with so much strength. I loved seeing her let herself and Tucker be loved by Dec because they both deserve so much love. It hurt my heart that Vi was almost all alone before Dec. I loved getting to see someone else take care of Vi since she's been taking care of herself and Tuck for so long. Her obsession with flowers and converse just made me smile because the girl is too damn precious.

𝐇𝐎𝐋𝐘 𝐃𝐀𝐃𝐃𝐘 𝐃𝐄𝐂𝐋𝐀𝐍. Man is the most persistent guy ever, he refuses to give up on Vi and good thing because that woman deserved so much love. The giant tatted southern boy is such a soft caring soul for those he cares about. For those he doesn't care about he truly is a brick wall that allows nothing through that will hurt those he loves. I need a Declan in my life, he cares and loves so damn hard.

“I can't help it, though. The man looks like a Greek God and is the biggest sweetheart that has ever lived.”

Katelyn truly blew me away, you can feel the emotions through the pages of the book. Katelyn put her whole heart into this book and she absolutely deserves all the love this book gets. I loved Declan and Vi and don't even get me started on Tuck, I am such a sucker for little boys and Tuck is truly too damn cute for his own good. I loved watching his bond grow with Declan, it was amazing to see them interact. You can tell how much all 3 of these people truly care for each other and it just made my heart so happy. Tropes:
- Sports Romance 🏈
- Single mom

- Strong FMC
- Cinnamon roll MMC

This had all the makings of a heartfelt, Southern-tinged romance with emotional depth, found family, and that protective cinnamon roll energy we can’t resist.

The story follows Vi, a single mom clawing her way through life, doing everything she can for her son Tucker. Then we meet Declan, the southern football star with dimples sharp enough to cut glass and a heart made of melted marshmallows. From the jump, Declan is smitten with Vi, but it’s not just her—he falls head over cleats for little Tucker too, and that right there is where this book flirts with perfection. A man who not only cherishes the woman but embraces the package deal? Swoon.

But let’s talk third-act breakup—because of course there is one, and yeah, it was the kind that makes you groan and grip the book harder than necessary. Enter Tucker’s biological father, stomping in like a toddler denied his toy. He doesn’t want Vi back out of love, no—he wants control, revenge, and to make her life hell for daring to move on. His actions are petty, cruel, and scream “man-child in emotional crisis.” The drama feels a bit forced, like it’s trying too hard to ignite a fire that never quite catches.

Now here’s where the truth bites a little: the story had potential. You could feel the love brewing between Vi and Declan. The emotional beats were there. The struggles, the sweetness, the family dynamics—it all circled the bullseye but never hit dead center. Instead, it skimmed the surface, giving us all the tropes but not quite enough depth.

The Walls We Break by Katelyn Taylor.

Thank you Katelyn for the ARC!

This story touches on some really hard topics that are unfortunately all too common. With that said, Declan makes my heart sing. He is so sweet. An absolute dream. I found myself smiling often and big throughout this book. Also genuinely laughing out loud at times. (Judy is a hoot.) Vi is a single mom that hasn’t had an easy life. She’s doing the best she can for Tucker. He comes first. Always. Declan is very insistent on taking Vi out and after many refusals she finally relents. They really hit it off and start building a beautiful foundation until VI’s past catches up to her. I won’t share more but I will say what comes nexts rips my heart out and this is a different kind of pain. One that I didn’t see coming and it’s devastating. Bawled my eyes out. Because this book hits on hard truths I think it’s even more powerful. Here’s to the woman who never stop fighting for their children and a better life.

“Just Breathe”

"It's life. I have too much to be thankful for to focus on what I don't have."

“Red… Orange… Yellow… Green… Blue… Purple… Rainbow.” IYKYK OMG 😭🥰

"Everyone needs somebody, baby. Let me be that person for you."

Description:

Walls.
They’re immovable, resilient. Meant to keep things out and most the time they keep nearly everything out, except me.
I’m the “Mike”. The middle linebacker for the Seattle Crusaders. It’s my job to break through anything in my path and make it out the other side and I’m damn good at it too.
Until I meet Vi Nielson. A strong, hardworking, drop dead sexy single mom to an adorable little boy.
I fell hard, fast. The problem? She has the most indestructible walls that I’ve ever encountered with no interest in dropping them.
There’s no turning back for me now.
I know what I want and what I want is her.
I’ll do whatever it takes to make her mine because make no mistake, Vi Nielson is mine.

I was introduced to Katelyn Taylor last year when she released “The Loyalties We Break” and to say that I loved it would be an understatement. When she announced TWWB I KNEW I had to read it as soon as possible (obviously).

I will say there are definitely trigger warnings that come with this book. Katelyn very clearly lays them out before the book begins.

Possible triggers are:
Domestic violence
Physical and psychological neglect
Trauma
PTSD
Attempted sexual assault

Okay, so if you could tell already I LOVED this book. It was a great read and I flew through it! The story of Vi and Declan is absolutely perfect🥹The Walls We Break made me smile and laugh but it also made me upset and when I tell you I sobbed, I sobbed. Katelyn did a wonderful job of bringing VI’s character to life. I felt every one of her emotions right along with her. Ugh, I don’t have words..this was a beautiful story of love, family, and healing. Oh and did I mention that it’s spicy? Because it’s spicyyyy. Let’s have a moment for daddy Declan😛 So, here is your sign to add this to your TBR immediately because it is out February 6th!! You can pre-order by clicking on the link in Katelyn’s bio! It will also be available on Kindle Unlimited💙
