Rylie Coleman was building the life she always wanted. She had a job as an oncology nurse, a great boyfriend, and amazing family and friends around her. What more could a girl want? But after deciding to protect herself from the same fate as her mother, her “great” boyfriend decided the scars were too much to take. To remind herself of the strong woman she was, Rylie decided to take a break from dating to focus on herself. But wouldn’t you know it? Her old high school crush showed up with his perfect smile, sweet words, and his sights set on Rylie.
Mason Clark always trusted his gut. When he saw the beautiful brunette, he knew he wanted to know her. Too bad he already did; he just didn’t remember her. Determined to put the past behind them, he worked hard to break down Rylie’s defenses and show her the man he'd become. Not the teenager she remembered him to be.
Just as things began to fall into place, a body count started to rise, and the killer remained on the loose. Could Rylie and Mason keep their past behind them and survive their present?
High School crush ? Hot Cop ? Everything not as it seems?
Murder, Obsessive crazy ex's, explosive sex let me tell you i am here for it all!!
KL Motts Mason is so good!! Rylie is the woman most girls/women relate to - crush's that weren't returned? a crossing of paths that was dictated by a manipulative bitch and future views tainted by the actions of others.
Can you unlearn what you thought to have known to be true for so many years?
Can Rylie shake her own insecurities and finally accept herself? To allow anyone truly in and to love her wholly? Flaws and all?
Can Mason change how he is perceived in the eye of someone he wants with his entire being?
Troubles escalating and getting a little too close to home for the pair.. When the mystery is uncovered will everyone have survived to be able to finally start living or will the desperate obsessive actions of another be the ending before its ever really begun?
I loved exploring the growth of these characters and the hard hitting subjects and awareness that was raised within the pages of this book.
I cant wait to read more from KL Mott based on this book! Would recommend!
If you need a small town romantic suspense that brings all the FEELS, then this is the Perfect One to grab NOW!
I'm shocked this was a debut book by this author to be honest. She brought a great deal of details and emotions in this story. Her characters were well thought out and had that relatable aspect to them. Once I started this book it was one that I loved to get lost in the pages as I was reading. It has so much going on in it, but it has a great flow and transition from the dual POV of Rylie and Mason. It's a slow burn with a few spicy moments mixed into this amazing story.
This book follows Rylie, an oncology nurse that has some self doubt from a previous surgery and the reaction she gets when she discloses the issue to her past boyfriend makes her feel unloved. She was such an enjoyable character from her sarcastic witty banter between her besties and even Mason, made me absolutely love her. She's a feisty but sweet girl who gives so much to others. She's a character you can easily relate to, and following her journey from a girl who felt unloved and less than, bloom into a girl who gained confidence from the one man she thought did her wrong in high school was absolutely perfect.
Mason might have been the hot jock that was oblivious to Rylie in high school, but as a grown man now known as the hot cop, he's so much more. His character is one that seemed to fit the role of jerky jock when Rylie knew him but Mason all grown-up now is the sweetest and most caring man ever. He's what you would call book boyfriend/husband material for sure. He's cocky but swoony in the best of ways. I loved how he made Rylie his number one priority and gave her the confidence to feel loved and whole finally.
So if you love small town romantic suspense this book has a ton to unpack. You have a stalker/killer lurking about bring an added bonus of a mystery to figure out, with a second chance at love scenario, and slow burn and angsty romance, to finding a HEA. I highly recommend this book and I'm definitely excited to see what this author has to bring next. She has such a gift with bringing out details that setup this little world and it's highly relatable characters. It's a definite must read. Overall: 5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Spice/heat level: 2/5 🌶🌶
A debut novel. Definitely kept me entertained. Small town vibes with a little suspense thrown in. He’s a cop. She’s a nurse. Great supporting characters. I’m looking forward to reading more of the series and author.
I loved everything about this fast burn romance. It has action, suspension, murder mystery and some super sweet moments. The storyline was addictive and sexy. Highly recommend this series. Can't wait for the next instalments
firstly, the development of the mc from the heroine being hostile to the hero due to what happen in high school, to them declaring their love for each other is totally nonsense. there wasn't any kind of strong connection nor was their relationship developed through a great flow route. it felt too sudden to me when they said the "L" word, i was like "huh????"
secondly, after they said the "L" word, they were declaring their undying love for each other like every fucking moment and chapter. like, "yeah, then?"
lastly, the killer was pretty obvious right from the start. not much mystery though the author tried to add in other suspicious characters to divide readers attention. but come on.... for readers who have read tons of books would have guess it correctly.
the execution needs a lot of work... author probably needs to write another 5-10 books to up her game because books like this are dime in a dozen.
overall, i think it's a waste of my time to finish it. could have use the time to read better books.

This was a really great small-town romance. I loved the setting, and the characters, and thrown in on top of that was a little mystery.
K.L. Mott did a fantastic job mixing this sweet romance into a mystery with some suspense.
Our hero is a small-town cop and our heroine is a nurse. They went to high school together and while she remembers him very well he doesn't remember her, and when he learns about their time together he sets out to not only make it all right but to win the girl.
If you enjoy small-town romance and mystery then this is a story you'll enjoy. On top of that is a deeply emotional journey for the heroine.
I really liked this book and I look forward to more from K.L. Mott and the town and people of Sweet Springs. . . . Rylie Coleman is an oncology nurse working at the small hospital in her home of Sweet Springs. She has recently moved back and is enjoying her work and being home if only the man she moved home with hadn't been a cheating jerk. While she's happy to live her life as is for now her very loyal patients push her to go out and date again. In particular, Stacey, a woman she went to high school with wants to set her up with her brother. Rylie remembers him from high school and while she liked Cam it was always his best friend that Rylie wanted. Pity the big jerk broke her heart with his cruel prank. 'Mason Clark. Mr. Tall, Dark, and Handsome. Hometown hero. Homecoming King. My high school crush. I was always invisible to him.'
Mason Clark is helping out his best friend by picking up his sister from her hospital appointment. They are more like family than friends and it's hard for Mason to watch his friends struggle through Stacey's treatments. When Stacey is bought out by the most beautiful woman he thinks he's ever seen he can't take his eyes off her. And the unsettling feeling of wanting his friend's hands off her only makes Mason more aware of her. While most women are happy for his attention this one seems to want nothing to do with him. In fact, she names him Officer Dickweed much to his surprise and interest. Now Mason is determined to get to know Rylie because everything about her so far he wants.
Rylie is surprised when Mason starts to show up in more places and makes it known he wants to get to know her more but Rylie can't just forget about the past and how Mason made her feel. But Mason had no idea about what happened in high school and with his brother filling him in he sets out to make sure Rylie knows the truth because he wants her to be in his life.
Rylie is afraid of the part of herself she keeps hidden from almost everyone. Her ex really messed with her head and hurt her badly. She's now terrified of what will happen with Mason when he learns what she's hiding because as much as she didn't want to fall for him Mason is quickly becoming everything to her. "I will worship your body. Worship you. I love you, Rylie. Let me love you."
Meanwhile, the town is facing a violent attacker that Mason and Cam are trying to track down. When Mason realizes that all of the victims look a lot like Rylie his protective instincts kick in further and on top of that her ex has been showing up and getting too pushy. Mason wants Rylie by his side forever and he needs to keep her safe. He and Cam will work to find the culprit threatening their town and he'll win Rylie's heart as well.
For a debut booked, it was knocked out of the park.
I was quickly enthralled Rylie character and her sassy one liners and kind heart. She is one feisty nurse that advocates for her patients and just wants to bring them comfort while they go through gruelling cancer treatments.
One of the patients she is caring is woman that she went to school with and just happens to have a connection to her child hood crush. A crush she thought was long buried especially when they meet again and he doesn’t recognize her.
Mason is a town cop and didn’t expect to receive an earful when he comes to pick up his best friends little sister after her treatments. One look at Rylie along with a snarky comment is all he needs. He may not have remembered her in the moment but decides this is a woman he needs to learn everything about.
As the story continues, we learn of a serial killer who is harming women that looked an awful lot like Rylie. When things get a little close to home, it’s decided that Rylie should stay with Mason and that is when things get interesting.
The banter had me laughing, the mystery had me on my toes and the emotional moments stripped me bare. I honestly wasn’t expecting to connect to the characters like I did but certain parts of Rylie’s story really hit home for me.
This is a story I would highly recommend and I can’t wait to continue in this world.
"You’re mine, Rylie. You. You’re my weakness. My strength. My reason.”
This book had the perfect mix of romance and suspense. Coupled with laughs, tears. The side characters and families added so much to the story.
I was hooked from the moment Mason was shot down by the beautiful Riley. A brutal hit to his ego that only made him want her more.
Riley is a single oncology nurse that has insecurities when it comes to worth, thanks an ex who made her feel ugly and unloveable. Enter Mason, the "hot cop" that falls in love instantly. But, he doesn't remember that he has a history with Riley, one where he broke her heart; while he didn't even realize it.
While these two are trying to get together, their small town has a killer on the loose, with victims that resemble Riley. Mason wants to do everything he can to protect her.
I didn't want to stop reading about Riley and Mason. I hope to see more of them in future books He is such a sweetheart and ooey gooey man when it comes to Riley, and she finally feels loved, beautiful and accepted with him.
I first want to say is that I first read this book back in 2022 on Kindle Vella. This book was brought to my attention by the Author, K.L. Mott. I worked in the same department for a while with her and we bonded over our love of reading.
A little background about this book, this book was written with the thought that “Not all scars are visible.” During tough times some of us read to escape our reality while others like K.L Mott write. I am very impressed with the detail and character development in this story. I was moved by the story of Rylie and all that she went through but to still come out on the other side with her head held high and her spirit still shining bright. I fell in love with her positive outlook. The story between Mason and Rylie is the type of story you could tell for generations. The biggest takeaway from this book would be that all though the stack of cards you have been dealt, you always have at least two options. Two very different outcomes but what you can make of it and the people you surround yourself with will be how you make it your story.
OMG! Where do I begin with this AH-MAZ-ING story? Well I suppose from the start.
Rylie is an oncology nurse, and she has some wounds to heal before getting back in the dating pool. Heading home, she is working at the local hospital. Her old high school crush showed up with his perfect smile, sweet words, and his sights set on Rylie. Yep, you guessed it, Mason!!
He's a "playboy", and she's not looking for anything at all. So how will this go? Oh, let's throw in some murders happening in their very small, quiet town.
DID I MENTION MASON IS A POLICE OFFICER?! UH HELLO!
I don't wanna ruin it for anyone else, but SERIOUSLY Y'ALL NEED TO READ THIS BOOK!!
This is also K.L.'s DEBUT book. Like really, her FIRST!! I can't wait to read more of her books, and about these amazing characters she introduced to me in this one. I loved the storyline, the plot, the characters, EVERYTHING!! You never know what was going to happen with the next page. OMG! Chapter 31 I bawled reading it! Thank you K.L. for letting me read this amazing story!
Some of my fave quotes from the book: 1. If someone doesn't want you scars and all, then they don't deserve you. - PREACH IT SISTER! 2. I was a damn fighter. A fact I would never let myself forget, but sometimes I just didn't know that I would find the right man who would love all of me. - I bawled like a freaking baby!! 3. Slowly, he breathed air back into my lungs when I didn't even know I was drowning. - OMG! MY FAVE!
I love romantic suspense, so, even though I knew who the bad guy was early on, I still enjoyed that aspect of it.
Rylie and Mason were both likeable characters, however the romance was way too insta love for me. I just didn't believe it. I felt the author told more than she'd showed the developing relationship.
I loved Cam and Stephanie. They were great secondary characters. However, I found Haley to be absolutely obnoxious.
It also irritated me that Rylie seemed to believe the lies that Faith was spewing off about Mason. Rylie supposedly loves him and trusts him, but instead, she suddenly believes his manipulative witch of an ex? I understand her insecurities over her surgery and scars, but still, she should've known better. I'd have dragged that woman out by her hair and called the police.
Unfortunately, I didn't enjoy this enough to continue the series.

This is the debut book for @k.l.mott.author and I am amazed at her writing. Mason was such an incredible book from start to tearful finish! I was hooked from chapter one.
My heart broke for Rylie. But she was such a strong woman, I loved her message she put off in this story. Such an inspiration!
Then there was Mason. He threw me for a loop in the beginning but I fell in love with him. Everyone loves a brooding cop.
Mason is a great suspenseful romance that will most definitely bring you to tears….I k ow it did for me! ——————————————- It releases December 15th!
This book was so sweet. I found myself melting over Mason along with feeling the heart wrenching emotions that came from Riley. What I loved about this book was that yeah it had the juicy suspense that a book like this should have, keeping you on the edge BUT this story felt like it had real life problems in it and it wasn’t sugar coated. It made everything feel more raw and real when trying to relate to the characters. Speaking of characters you would think the main characters were my favorite, nope lol Haley was my absolute favorite character in the book, she was hilarious and so witty. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If you’re looking for a book that’s sweet, with a second chance at love I definitely recommend this one!
Mason was a good read. Rylie is a great character. She's been through a lot. She's a sweet, down-to-earth girl. She's been in a bad relationship and is not looking for a relationship, but then she has a connection with Mason that may change her mind. Mason is a sexy cop that didn't seem to notice Rylie when they were in high school, but he notices her now. He's a good sweet guy. I liked these together. While their relationship is building, there is also a mystery of murder in the town. I thought I knew who was doing the murders, but I was wrong. I liked the storyline not being predictable. This one was a good read.
I received this as an arc from the author and I’m voluntarily leaving my honest review.
This was a great small town romance. I was quite surprised when I found out that this was a debut novel, it was really well written and put together. The storyline was cohesive and interesting. I was invested in the characters and their motivations. Rylie and Mason had great chemistry and I really liked the way their relationship grew. The storyline had me guessing a bit and even though I wasn’t surprised by the ending I still really enjoyed it. I hope that the author will continue the series.
“Hallmark After Dark” was a catchy description I heard about this book. If I can define that phrase as a romantic, lusty, suspenseful, story about seemingly familiar characters in a small town, than that’s the right phrase. KL Mott’s writing is completely relatable. Her writing is descriptive and realistic. The characters have depth and their relationships to one another unfolds organically. This is the author’s first novel and an excellent start to hopefully a long series.
A really sweet story with a touch of spice. As well as being a romance, it had a touch of suspense which kept me guessing right up until the very end. I loved the fact that the FMC and MMC had history seeing as how they went to high school together. Mason really had to earn Rylie’s trust as he didn’t make the best first impression when they were reunited. A really enjoyable story with two very likeable lead characters, I’m looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
I’ll be honest— I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when I dove into this one. This is K.L.’s debut romance and it is fire 🔥🔥🔥 Mason is perfection & his feelings for Rylie are almost palpable. K.L. does an AMAZING job developing these characters & building a world you want to live in. Protective, growly, alpha cops…how could you not?? I am extremely impressed by her writing & I can’t wait to read more of her work. Im crossing my fingers that we’ll see more of these fabulous characters soon!
For Mason to be a debut novel, I’m extremely impressed. I love small town romances but sometimes they can be a little bit lackluster for me. With Mason, there was a very unexpected element involving the FMC I don’t think I’ve ever read in a romance. Which I very much loved and appreciated. I especially loved how Mason made Rylie feel “normal” even though she already was.

What a debut!!! This book had everything, romance, small town vibes, character growth, spicy times and a bit of mystery. Everything was well written and well thought out and you could tell the author did research for the medical pieces. I loved the whirlwind romance and it was definitely THAT kind of love. I hope there’s more to this series bc i am thoroughly impressed!!
This book is so good! I couldn't put it down. It's full of steamy hot romance, mystery and thrills...it's got it all! I highly recommend reading this one and the second book in the series called Camden. This author is so very talented!
I went into this blind and I'm pleasantly surprised.
Mason you sweetheart. Rylie you badass. Add in a stalker, the suspense, body confidence issues, romance, spice and the additional characters like Cam, Steph and Hales. Overall, a good read!
Small Town romance that kept my attention but did not blow my mind. I felt like it went from 0 to 100 really fast. Also it was really predictable. I knew who the killer was a quarter in the book.
Now… let’s get one thing straight. I adored everything!! There was a bit of second chance and there was romance and there was suspense. Ugh I was hooked from the very beginning!!
The characters were written so well!! Rylie is the cutest and most caring human being who has some insecurities from her past & a past relationship. Mason is the kindest soul when it comes to those he cares about. He took one look at Rylie and knew that she was it for him. I swear I swooned throughout the entire book reading about all the amazing things he did to prove his love to her.
There was great mystery and suspense which I absolutely devoured and it had me guessing throughout. It was fun playing detective (but I will admit, I’d be a horrible one since my guesses were always wrong haha). I adored this from start to finish and highly recommend if your looking for a fast paced read filled with great chemistry, an overprotective/ head over heels for her hero and insane suspense ❤️ So grateful to have gotten to read this ARC, this is my honest review <3
LOVE LOVE LOVE these characters! Strong plot with a satisfying ending! The spicy in this book is perfect and fits well with these characters! This book did leave me wanting more on side characters! Can’t wait for book 2!
