times have changed: I feel that to-day, only half or less-than-half of this is actual Satire - of which I have such enormous respect I read little pseudo intermediate public middle-school textbooks as these. forinstance; the Dotty Parker story is simply a sardonic, exaggerated complaint, rant or internal monologue ~ as to *what* it satirizes, I have no idea\etc. -others are merely flip, glib or some type of what-if Sci fi (& yes; great respect there, as well!) but it *is* for students, attempting, in a 47 pp foreword, to define satire in academic terms. but *fun* is here, to be sure, & they have thoughtfully allotted in the very beginning of our book; George Albee's The Top, VS Pritchett's The Ape, as well as painfully (fun) & acerbic mocking by SV Benet, Welty, Angus Wilson, Lady O'Connor, & kitchen-sink entries by HL Mencken & Thom Pynchon! this little 1971 (?) edition is a bit stuck-in-time, but a good-enough 'academic' intro to satire with a generous bibliography - as if to cry: READ FURTHER!
