Natsuki Takaya (高屋 奈月 Takaya Natsuki, real name Naka Hatake) is the penname of a Japanese manga artist best-known for creating the series Fruits Basket. She was born on July 7, 1973; (Tanabata). Takaya is left-handed and once revealed that she wanted to be a mangaka since first grade, when her sister started drawing.
She was born in Shizuoka, Japan, but was raised in Tokyo, where she made her debut in 1992. She enjoys video games such as the Final Fantasy series or Sakura Wars, or working on her different manga series, such as Fruits Basket, which is the second best-selling shōjo manga ever in Japan, and the top selling shōjo manga in North America. This is a review of volume 1 and 2. I read them in an omnibus which isn't listed on Goodreads. The page numbers match up so I'm going with it!
From the mangka who brought us Fruits Basket, we have a new series set in a small town in the countryside, close to the sea. Sakuya, a high school girl lives with her cousin, Kanade, who is acting as her guardian. She lives a simple life and when times are painful or sad she star gazes with her two friends, Yuuri (a boy crush in her) and Hijiri (a strong willed girl), and is filled with the beauty of the sky. Then one day a boy, Chihiro, comes to her house and poses as her boyfriend...
I picked this up as a lark in the library, feeling the art style was familiar but I couldn't place it until I got on Goodreads! I quite enjoy the unique style of Fruits Basket and it compliments this story as well. The characters do get a little confusing to keep straight but its a very down to earth style that suits the humanity in the story. I did eventually get everyone down and it became easier to read.
There is this huge discrepancy between how Chihiro acted when he first met with Sakuya at her cousins and how he acted when they meet later. Its the mystery of this 180 degree change that intrigues you to keep reading. It's that simple of a plot... but it was quite compelling even though it was obvious what would happen next!
Even to Chihiro, he had to know he would end up at her school... so why did he do that initial meeting?! Then there are times he acts at odds with his professed hatred of Sakuya! There is nothing special about Sakuya but she's a good girl who her friends love. She is living with her cousin, who isn't much older than her and is quite temperamental (in a totally fun way, I really got a kick out of him!) I liked her two friends too... but why the extreme feelings about her?!
This is a rather quiet story. There is the mystery at its core but Sakuya is the real mystery to me... I'll need to keep reading if I want to understand. I did enjoy this and the omnibus made the story fly by!!

I get a little crazy fan-girl about Natsuki Takaya....
This isn't as good as Fruits Basket, if that's what anyone was hoping (I know I was.. Shamefully) But it is still a capturing tale!
The artwork is beautiful, I adore her style, even down to the frame layouts. It's all so crisp and clean and easy to understand. That said, as with many of these that are translated, there is often a few errors in understanding, but these were few and didn't take anything away from the enjoyment.
The storyline is odd at first, and I'm still not sure I get it, but stick with it 'cause it's worth it. (At first I was convinced the main guy was gonna be something supernatural, but apparently I was wrong! Ha!)
I lapped this up like a cat to cream.

Hace unos años me hice la colección completa del manga, publicada por Norma Editorial.
Son once tomos en total y, cuando me la compré, tenía cofre incluido. Fue una edición muy cuidada cuando se publicó, allá por el año 2009 (o 2010, por esas fechas aproximadamente). No sé si habrá habido una reedición del manga a lo largo de estos diez años, pero la primera edición debo reconocer que estaba muy bien hecha. Me encantó la primera vez que la leí. Las sucesivas relecturas que he hecho del manga a lo largo de todos estos años solo hacen ratificar mi opinión al respecto: es el mejor manga de Natsuki.
Cuando escuchas el nombre de Natsuki Takaya se te viene a la mente su manga más popular: Fruits Baskets. Sin embargo, poca gente conoce este manga de su autoría: La melodía de las estrellas. En mi caso particular me gusta más este que Fruits Baskets por varios motivos. No solo por su dibujo (precioso) o la historia en sí misma (redonda), sino por los temas que trata a lo largo de este manga.
Tengo que reconocer que no es un manga para personas sensibles. Es un manga mucho más profundo a todos los niveles, aunque parezca un shojo o un slice of life a ratos.
Durante once tomos Takaya nos hace un retrato del maltrato infantil desolador, dentro de la sociedad japonesa. Si bien es cierto que nos muestra un halo de esperanza, a lo largo de la historia te das cuenta de que ha hecho un retrato crudísimo. Esto no pasa solo en Japón, también ocurre a lo largo del mundo: niños y niñas desprotegidos, siendo objeto de maltrato físico o psicológico por parte de sus propios responsables, sus padres. Y sin recibir ningún tipo de apoyo o ayuda por parte de la sociedad que no les escucha, no les cree y mira hacia otro lado.
Por supuesto esto tiene consecuencias para estos niños y niñas, especialmente cuando van creciendo y entienden que los adultos no les van a ayudar.
Una parte de estas consecuencias están expuestas en este manga. Si bien es cierto que a veces queda dulcificado, emboscado, están ahí.
Dentro de lo que cabe, el tema está bastante bien llevado. Takaya no pretende dar soluciones, pero sí mostrar una realidad mientras te cuenta la historia de varios adolescentes en el tramo final de su etapa como estudiantes antes de entrar en la universidad.
Ha sido uno de los mejores manga que he leído por cómo trata este tema y cómo lo muestra. Y, por supuesto, me gusta mucho más que Fruits Baskets por eso mismo.
Os la recomiendo totalmente, siempre y cuando tengas disposición de comprender que vas a llorar mucho mientras la lees.

Sakuya es una adolescente que vive con su primo Kanade porque sus padres se divorciaron, ninguno quiso quedarse con ella, y acabó viviendo con su padre y su madrastra que la maltrataba psicológicamente.
Actualmente es feliz asistiendo al instituto y compartiendo su vida con sus amigos Hijiri y Yuki, con los que ha fundado un club de astronomía para mirar las estrellas juntos.
Su vida comenzará a complicarse cuando Chihiro, un joven de su edad, aparece en su casa para celebrar su cumpleaños.
A partir de aquí nos encontramos un manga donde se complementa la vida diaria de Sakuya con sus emociones hacia Chihiro al tiempo que intenta lidiar y superar los sentimientos negativos que le provocó su pasado.
Es una serie que, aunque conserva el estilo de dibujo de la autora y ciertos momentos de profundidad emocional, se me ha quedado un tanto corta en el sentido en el que la protagonista es bastante simple y se deja machacar de forma continua por otrxs lo que te genera una sensación de falta de asertividad y de "no evolución" que es un tanto agridulce.
Las comparaciones son horribles pero, si quieres conocer alguna obra de la autora recomiendo encarecidamente "Fruits Baskets".

Check the content warnings for this if you have any triggers. There is some real rough stuff in here, including child abuse/neglect, grooming, and su*cide. The grooming is portrayed as romantic, funny, and charming and starts when the guy is around 18 and the girl is in the 5th grade. 🚩🚩🚩
I LOVED Fruits Basket, so I was excited to read this. It follows a similar formula of cheerful girl lives with older guy because she has nowhere else to go. She heals the hearts of all the abused people around her with her constant optimism in the face of personal tragedy.
The art is not great and the hair styles are constantly changing, so sometimes it takes a minute to figure out what character you are looking at.
I cried a few times. Bawled really.
The last chapter does NOT quite deliver after all of the angst. It is told from the POV of a side character that we don't ever like or know well. We don't get what we want on-page. Leaves you with a "Oh. It's done. Ok" kind of feeling after that looooong trip.

11 volumes de la série lu - Je n'ai pas autant aimé cette série que Fruits Basket mais je m'y attendais. J'ai bien aimé les personnages (particulièrement celui de Kana) et leur relations entre eux. J'ai beaucoup aimé en apprendre plus sur leur passé mais j'ai été très déçu par la fin abrupte de la série. J'ai l'impression que la résolution était beaucoup trop rapide et l'absence complète d'épilogue (qui s'étalait sur tout un volume dans le cas de Fruits Basket) m'a pas mal déçu. J'ai l'impression de ne pas trop savoir ce qui est arrivé au personnages auxquels je m'était attachée. J'ai tout de même apprécié la lecture de cette série que j'ai terminé en 3 jours.

Un premier tome qui nous présente des personnages attachants et mystérieux. La relation entre Sei et Yuuri est particulièrement drôle. L'ambivalence de Chihiro assez déroutante. Le côté bourru de Kana est très mignon, ça va bien au personnage de "grand frère" qu'il tient à la perfection. On sent chez Saku une blessure qui pour le moment reste cachée.
Les dessins sont mignons et très axés sur les personnages mais dans un shojo c'est ce qu'on attend après tout. L'intrigue plein de douceur et de mystère donne l'envie d'aller voir dans les tomes suivants ce qu'il se passe.

Hard to say to much since it's only the first volume. I admit that takaya's series 'fruits basket' is my favorite Manga of all time so this was bound to pale in comparison but I might adjust the rating after I know more and I'm curious to know more. So still a lovely start :)

Well, I'm curious to see what the next volume holds in store. The story started kind of slow. Nothing much really happened and I wasn't really into volume one. But hopefully the story will pick up and get more interesting

I have always found Natsuki Takaya's stories exactly when I needed them. As a kid, Furuba helped me excise the demons that come with abuse and neglect. In college, Hoshi wa Utau let me face the crippling depression that comes hand in hand with growing into adulthood.

Sakuyas 18. Geburtstag verläuft völlig anders als erwartet! Statt einen gemütlichen Abend mit ihrem Cousin Kanade zu verbringen, taucht der gut aussehende Chihiro auf und überrascht sie mit einem ganz besonderen Geschenk! Erst am nächsten Tag stellen Sakuya und Kanade fest, dass keiner von ihnen Chihiro vorher kannte und Kanade ihn nur aus einem Missverständnis heraus eingeladen hatte... Wer ist der mysteriöse Gast, der Sakuyas Herz so sehr zum Klopfen bringt?

Das Cover finde ich ehrlich gesagt nichts aussagend. Wir sehen hier lediglich Sakuya - welche ich aber optisch nicht ansprechend finde - sowie einen blau-lilanen Grund, der bei jedem Band der Reihe als Haupterkennungsmal dient. Nun kann sich der Betrachter durch die doch recht einfach Gestaltung nicht wirklich etwas zum Inhalt der Geschichte vorstellen und auch der Titel ist nicht sonderlich förderlich. Um ehrlich zu sein habe ich deswegen den Manga sehr lange einfach nicht beachtet und nur auf eine Empfehlung hin zugegriffen.
Eigener Eindruck:
Sakuya lebt bei ihrem Cousin Kanade und ist ihm dafür sehr dankbar, während die Nachbarschaft den eigenbrötlerischen Kanade dafür verurteilt, dass er das Mädchen angeblich ausnutzen würde. Doch Sakuya hat niemanden weiter. In der Schule beteiligt sich Sakuya mit ihrer besten Freundin und ihrem besten Freund an einem Verein der Sterne beobachtet, was von vielen ihrer Mitschüler einfach nur belächelt wird. Neben der Schule arbeitet sie als Aushilfe in einem Laden und versucht so etwas für ihre Unterkunft bei Kanade zuzusteuern, was die Nachbarschaft natürlich noch mehr aufrüttelt. Als Sakuya Geburtstag hat und selbst ihre besten Freunde scheinbar keine Zeit haben, findet sie zu Hause einen Überraschungsgast vor, den sie zuvor bereits auf der Straße getroffen hatte. Chihiro verbringt mit Sakuya und Kanade einen schönen Abend und Sakuya scheint sich sogar ein bisschen in den jungen Mann zu vergucken. Das Problem: Erst am nächsten Morgen bemerken Sakuya und Kanade, dass sie Chihiro gar nicht kannten und nur angenommen haben, dass er ein Freund des jeweils anderen ist. Während Kanade fuchsteufelswild über diese Situation ist, fragt sich Sakuya, ob sie Chihiro jemals wieder sehen wird....
"Twinkle Stars" aus der Feder von Natsuki Takaya lässt mich hin und her gerissen zurück. Einerseits kann ich für mich noch nicht ausmachen, ob das Ganze nicht doch noch einen magischen Hintergrund bekommt oder ob es sich bei dem Manga lediglich um eine romantische Geschichte zwischen Menschen handeln wird. Außerdem bin ich einerseits von den Zeichnungen fasziniert undandererseits gefallen sie mir nicht so. Sakuyas Freunde und Kanade finde ich zeichnerisch wirklich ansprechend, aber Sakuya selbst und Chihiro gefallen mir so ganz und gar nicht vom Stil her. Ansonsten bedient sich die Mangaka eigentlich dem üblichen Schema bei romantischen Mangas, wie ich finde. Wir haben hier eine Protagonistin die keinen weiter hat außer ihrem Cosuin und so dankbar ist, dass sie dort unterkommen konnte, dass sie es auf sich nimmt noch neben der Schule zu jobben. Das klischeehafte starke Mädchen wird hier also dargestellt. Eines, das mit allem zufrieden ist und für alles mehr als dankbar. Dass das natürlich von ihrem Umfeld skeptisch gesehen wird, das kann man sich gleich denken und es kommt auch so.
Was mir in dem Manga gut gefallen hat waren die Details. Die Mangaka versucht viel durch die Handlungen und Worte der Protagonisten zu erklären, damit der Leser die Thematiken schneller begreift. Außerdem meidet sie krasse Szenensprünge, sodass man doch recht gut hinterher kommt. Erst am nächsten Tag stellen Sakuya und Kanade fest, dass keiner von ihnen Chihiro vorher kannte und Kanade ihn nur aus einem Missverständnis heraus eingeladen hatte... Wer ist der mysteriöse Gast, der Sakuyas Herz so sehr zum Klopfen bringt?

Das Cover finde ich ehrlich gesagt nichts aussagend. Wir sehen hier lediglich Sakuya - welche ich aber optisch nicht ansprechend finde - sowie einen blau-lilanen Grund, der bei jedem Band der Reihe als Haupterkennungsmal dient. Nun kann sich der Betrachter durch die doch recht einfach Gestaltung nicht wirklich etwas zum Inhalt der Geschichte vorstellen und auch der Titel ist nicht sonderlich förderlich. Um ehrlich zu sein habe ich deswegen den Manga sehr lange einfach nicht beachtet und nur auf eine Empfehlung hin zugegriffen.
Eigener Eindruck:
Sakuya lebt bei ihrem Cousin Kanade und ist ihm dafür sehr dankbar, während die Nachbarschaft den eigenbrötlerischen Kanade dafür verurteilt, dass er das Mädchen angeblich ausnutzen würde. Doch Sakuya hat niemanden weiter. In der Schule beteiligt sich Sakuya mit ihrer besten Freundin und ihrem besten Freund an einem Verein der Sterne beobachtet, was von vielen ihrer Mitschüler einfach nur belächelt wird. Neben der Schule arbeitet sie als Aushilfe in einem Laden und versucht so etwas für ihre Unterkunft bei Kanade zuzusteuern, was die Nachbarschaft natürlich noch mehr aufrüttelt. Als Sakuya Geburtstag hat und selbst ihre besten Freunde scheinbar keine Zeit haben, findet sie zu Hause einen Überraschungsgast vor, den sie zuvor bereits auf der Straße getroffen hatte. Chihiro verbringt mit Sakuya und Kanade einen schönen Abend und Sakuya scheint sich sogar ein bisschen in den jungen Mann zu vergucken. Das Problem: Erst am nächsten Morgen bemerken Sakuya und Kanade, dass sie Chihiro gar nicht kannten und nur angenommen haben, dass er ein Freund des jeweils anderen ist. Während Kanade fuchsteufelswild über diese Situation ist, fragt sich Sakuya, ob sie Chihiro jemals wieder sehen wird....
"Twinkle Stars" aus der Feder von Natsuki Takaya lässt mich hin und her gerissen zurück. Einerseits kann ich für mich noch nicht ausmachen, ob das Ganze nicht doch noch einen magischen Hintergrund bekommt oder ob es sich bei dem Manga lediglich um eine romantische Geschichte zwischen Menschen handeln wird. Außerdem bin ich einerseits von den Zeichnungen fasziniert undandererseits gefallen sie mir nicht so. Sakuyas Freunde und Kanade finde ich zeichnerisch wirklich ansprechend, aber Sakuya selbst und Chihiro gefallen mir so ganz und gar nicht vom Stil her. Ansonsten bedient sich die Mangaka eigentlich dem üblichen Schema bei romantischen Mangas, wie ich finde. Wir haben hier eine Protagonistin die keinen weiter hat außer ihrem Cosuin und so dankbar ist, dass sie dort unterkommen konnte, dass sie es auf sich nimmt noch neben der Schule zu jobben. Das klischeehafte starke Mädchen wird hier also dargestellt. Eines, das mit allem zufrieden ist und für alles mehr als dankbar. Dass das natürlich von ihrem Umfeld skeptisch gesehen wird, das kann man sich gleich denken und es kommt auch so.
Was mir in dem Manga gut gefallen hat waren die Details. Die Mangaka versucht viel durch die Handlungen und Worte der Protagonisten zu erklären, damit der Leser die Thematiken schneller begreift. Außerdem meidet sie krasse Szenensprünge, sodass man doch recht gut hinterher kommt. Auch baut sie viele humorvolle stellen ein und schafft es auch ungeahnte Situationen einzuspielen, die den Leser regelrecht überraschen. Twinkle Stars est une œuvre de Natsuki Takaya, la mangaka de Fruits Basket que je ne porte pas particulièrement dans mon cœur.
C’est tout l’inverse avec ce manga là qui nous offre une histoire touchante avec des personnages que j’adore.
Le jour des 18 ans de Sakuya, Chihiro se présente à la maison où elle habite avec son cousin Kanade. Sur un malentendu, ils l’invitent à partager leur repas puis le garçon disparaît dans la nuit.
Les personnages sont emplis de blessures, que ce soit Saku qui n’a plus de famille, Kana qui semble souffrir d’une grave dépression, et Chihiro, si distant.
Ils ont pourtant au fond d’eux cette petite étoile qui ne demande qu’à briller.
Heureusement que dans ce premier tome il y a Sei et Yuuri, les membres du club Hokan, pour mettre un peu de bonne humeur avec leur dispute. Sans oublier le chien Ponta.
Le graphisme n’est pas transcendant, certains personnages ayant une forte ressemblance avec ceux de Fruits Baskets, mais je trouve qu’il y a quand même une certaine amélioration.
Ce n’est pas un manga très surprenant, dans le sens où le scénario semble quand même assez couru d’avance, mais il a une très belle atmosphère, à la fois nostalgique et sombre, qui me plaît beaucoup.
Avec sa narration toute douce, ce manga donne une impression de bonheur doux-amer assez étrange, mais qui m’a séduite en un instant.

This is the follow-up series of the Fruits Basket mangaka and it has no mystical powers as far as I can see - actually the way it develops is lot more in the direction of Kare Kano, but in a Takaya way. The eventual love interest of the heroine has a really dark personal past (but not as over the top as in Kare Kano) however Sakuya herself may be acting all optimistic (like Tohru) but she herself has lived a life of being an outsider and only now has a balance that makes her be cheerful.
She basically just has the bad luck to fall in love with a guy who is carrying a heavy load and is not interested in opening up to her at all. If you've read Furuba you know that Takaya has developed a way of foreshadowing all kinds of stuff that we won't get into for volumes yet, so you better be patient, otherwise this won't work for you.
Her art hasn't changed from the end of Furuba, so it remains hard to seperate characters occasionally.

Che strano numero introduttivo!
Mi ha confuso più che altro. A parte i miei soliti problemi a distinguere i vari personaggi, non ho ben capito cosa stesse succedendo. C'è lei che vive con lui e un giorno compare un terzo individuo che li inganna per passare con loro il compleanno di lei. Poi sparisce e alla fine del volume di scopre che . Non si sa perché.
Poi ci sono gli amici della scuola, tra cui una migliore amica che promette faville.
Bah, vedremo come procede.

Hmmm...bingung nih ama ceritanya...temanya belum jelas..tokoh utama karakternya mirip ama tokoh di fruit basket...seorang anak perempuan yg hidup dengan tegar dan ceria meski mempunyai masa lalu yg kelam.Dikelilingi oleh teman" yg menyayanginya karena sifat nya itu.Trus ketemu cowo misterius yg awalnya sangat ramah,tp belakangan malah bilang benci banget sama si cewek...Greget utk komik ini belum dapat sih..tp bolehlah dilanjutkan utk baca buku berikutnya..3 stars utk permulaan :-)

I love this series and author so much
The first volume of Twinkle Stars is best described as bittersweet, there isn't much I can really say for this book without spoilers so I'll simply say that it's equal parts sad and soul crushing but also so hopeful and romanticized the small pleasures in life in this case star gazing.
If you're a fan of Fruits Basket you should check out this series you won't regret it though with how hard the English editions are to find your wallet might.

Karakter2 dorky dan quirky ala Takaya selalu bisa membuatku tertarik. Langsung tanpa pertimbangan apa2. Ditambah kemampuan Takaya untuk menyuapkan twist dan plot langsung ke pikiran pembaca, tanpa permisi dan langsung mengakhirinya. Hanya saja...sedikit lame di bagian tokoh yang secara kebetulan sekolah di tempat yg sama. Tapi sementara ini coba tunggu dan baca lanjutannya saja.
