In the not-too-distant past, I regularly reviewed children's picture books. I loved reviewing them because I fell in love with reading as a child. But far too often, I found the picture books uninspiring and even annoying, sometimes a little too preachy and sometimes just not well executed. I'm so glad I started reviewing picture books again, and that I started with this book! It has everything that I love in a children's picture book. It's bright and colorful. It plays with words. No grammatical errors jumped out at me. The author uses language skillfully. The wordplay is fun—including made-up words (that completely make sense) and skillful word choice. She also uses words and images to tie the end of the story back to the beginning. The book's message is good, but it doesn't feel overly preachy. She empowers children by showing Earth kids being the ones who solve the robots' doubt monster problem! The images are well done, and many are darn right cute. The pages have a lot going on and are perfect for child interaction, like having them find solar system planets on a page. I love that the author included, on the page before the story starts, a somewhat whimsical drawing of our solar system and the made-up solar system of the space robot. If you buy this book, you should definitely go over that with the child you will read it to, as they will learn a little about the makeup of our solar system and will probably be amused—as I was—by things like thinking of Saturn rings as racetracks and the showing of the Tooth Fairy's home as being on the moon! Such whimsy and fun, along with a wonderful message and a little learning, make this a cracking good read. Highly recommended.
I received a free copy of this picture book, but that did not affect my review.
A WISHING SHELF BOOK REVIEW 5th December 2022 TITLE: Novo, How to Shrink the Doubt Monsters AUTHOR: Charly Froh Star Rating: 5
‘A clever little book full of very cool robots, very funny-looking zogs (I want one!) and the TERRIBLE doubt monsters. Lots of fun, and a good message too!’ The Wishing Shelf
REVIEW It's so important when finding books for young children to find books that not only enthrall them but also, possibly, will help them to understand important life lessons. In this picture book by Charly Froh and sweetly illustrated by Zuzana Svobodova, the author attempts to help children to understand how important it is ´to be all you can be´ and not listen to doubters. All in all, I think most young children, say, six, seven or even eight year olds, will find this book fun to flick through. There´s so much to look at, from super-cool ´Wroom! Wroom!´ space scooters to multi-eyed (and very sweet looking) monsters. And the story is fun and exciting too as the little robot (Novo) shoots off to another planet (which most readers will recognise!) to discover a way of stopping the doubt monsters from destroying his world. I must say, this author, helped by the fantastically talented illustrator, pack this book full of inventive fun. I particularly loved the page where the robots are staring down the doubt monsters, along with the line We talked about all the things that made us AMAZING, and remembered how BOT-TASTIC we were. Well, this book is BOT-TASTIC and if you happen to be on the hunt for a wonderfully fun story which might just keep your child enthralled for hours, this might be it. HOW TO SHRINK THE DOUBT MONSTERS by Charley Froh focuses on Novo the Space Robot from the plant Infinita.
Novolina or as their friends call them Novo, is a little robot who is suddenly overcome with ‘doubts’, doubts in the form of colorful doubt monsters who begin to affect all of Novo’s friends as well. In an effort to escape Novo heads to the planet Earth where they will discover the doubt monsters have followed. With the help of the Earthlings, Novo will push the doubts away, making them smaller until the doubts are no longer troublesome.
HOW TO SHRINK THE DOUBT MONSTERS is a cute story for the very young although some of the language is may be above their comprehension. The images are colorful and bright; the story is cute.
Everything is going well for Novo the space robot until the doubt monsters arrive. Suddenly, no one has any confidence, so Novo jets off across the universe to discover the answer and meets some earthlings with some not-so-surprising advice.
This book is fun any playful and full of only slightly distracting illustrations. The protagonist doesn't exactly solve the problem, but he comes close, so while I can't give this one full marks, I am pleased with how it turns out. The wordplay is fun, and the little details are silly, all while offering a meaningful message.
Novo is a space robot from the planet Infinita. He is happy living there until his planet receives a visit from the Doubt Monsters from planet Worria. Those monsters make the spacebots feel fear, doubt and lose confidence. He headed to planet Earth looking for help. A beautiful story about getting confident and overcoming fears and worries. Fun to read and it contains wonderful illustrations. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This was a book I needed to read. As I work in a software development job, I am constantly faced with errors which create huge self doubt and I read this book exactly when I was particularly in doubt over my career choices. But this book, even though it's a children's book, helped me because I was able to see how children and bots alike were able to make doubt go away with merely believing in oneself. I would recommend this book to children and also to people who are in self doubt.
This will be a delight to many little robot lovers, but I am not sure it will be loved by all children. It is very difficult to read as an ebook as the printing is very small and lots of text on each page. It would be far easier to read as a hard-cover book.
The book is colourful and if a child likes it, I would imagine he or she would want the full Novo collection.
This book is just so cute. And my daughter's reaction to it made it that much more better. She keeps going back to this book and now I will probably need to get more at this rate. Great family bonding time and reading just means the most to me. Thank you for allowing me to experience this book with her.
Such a cute story for kids about fighting off doubt. Fabulous illustrations, words that flow with story, just cute books to enjoy reading and teach lessons with your littles. I have read other books by author and love this robot series. While I don't have any grandkids yet when I do these will be favorite books I'm sure! I won this book in a goodreads giveaway thank you.
Great illustrations to go with a great story. The author did a good job creating a fun home world for the robots and kids will enjoy the fluffy Doubt Monsters! I would say the age range is closer to 4-6/7.
A gorgeous book about believing in yourself and fighting away any doubts and worries. The story is really child-friendly in how it is written, the language used, and the choice of characters (robots). The illustrations are fantastic.
My 6 year old loved this book! We've already added this as a favorite to our book routine. The pictures kept her engaged. Well definitely continue this series!
