Flipping Out

Rate this book
Tobias is a lawyer who spends his free time "flipping" houses, which means buying a fixer-upper and selling it once it's cleaned up. He met contractor Ven on his last flip, and decided he liked the guy a lot. He likes Ven's work ethic, his style, and maybe a lot more.

One evening when Tobias gets home late from work and finds the place has been vandalized, he calls Ven, who cuts short his night out clubbing and comes to help clean up and brings his two guard dogs to keep the place safe overnight. Can Tobias convince Ven to stay and help out with more than just security?

Do you want to participate in Generic_Author_Event?
Drop me a line, please! If you're looking for a book for donation or a blog post from me, I'm usually cool with that.
Are you going to write a sequel to Some_Book_You_Wrote?
The up front answer is no, unless the book cover indicates that it's part of a series. If there's going to be a sequel to a book, you'll know once I've signed the contract.
Who is this Dianne person?
Only the light of my life and all that rot. She e-sides here: http://www.foxwrites.com/ Without her, you wouldn't see much from me at all, not even the books that don't have her name on the cover.
Do you read your email?
All the time. I think the question you want is do I answer my email? Occasionally. Badly. I'm a terrible, terrible emailer.
You're reading X books at once?!
Only occasionally at once. I can read two books at the same time, but I get dizzy. Mostly, I just switch books depending on my mood. It's unusual for me to have less than four on the go at a time.
Do you read reviews of your books?
No, sorry! I'm here, yes, but I prefer not to read reviews (no matter how lovely they are) because once a book has left my hands and is available to the readers, my relationship to it changes. It's all grown up. :) I have a clutter of booklings to nurture so they will join the others on your shelves.
Will you read/review my book?
Sorry, but no. There are a number of reasons for this but the biggest is—I suck at doing these things. I'm a horrible procrastinator. I get wound up and then blank out what I'm supposed to do. My ADHD goes galumphing through my head like a bull in a china shop, wrecking everything.
I'm a writer and you hated/loved my book!
I'm sure you're a lovely person, either way. Please have one or both of: "I'm sorry!" or "You're welcome!"
Can I be excused now?
Of course you can! Thanks for reading.

Authors: Anah Crow and Dianne Fox
Publisher: Torquere Press
Word Count: 46,400
Published: 2011 (compilation)
Fictionwise: $4.99

I know I’m a bit late to this book, but I couldn’t fathom buying each short story, which was barely a few chapters, prior to the compilations being released. That being said, the stories didn’t seem as though they could stand alone, but perhaps that wasn’t the point.

I was excited when I started this story, as I thought the main characters had a lot of promise. There seemed to be reasonable yet meaty personal and familial struggles on both sides and a “realistic” reason bringing the two of them together. And suddenly, I was let down. While these characters and the plot could have been expanded upon and made into a great story, it just fell flat. There was hardly any connection between them once they had sex. The sex and their relationship was not at all related to their struggles – they didn’t really speak to each other, the action was never really furthered… all of that with lackluster sex thrown in! I kept reading on thinking that there had to be some grand redeeming point somewhere – why let these characters go to waste?! But I never found it – I even started the next compilation (Renovations 4-6) to see if things moved along there – more to come on that later. Sadly, it just fizzled (or does it need to start to fizzle?).

The sex was hot for about the first encounter – although it was not very loving or passionate throughout. It seemed almost technical and there were several times that I got bored reading it. I’m not sure if the boredom came from too much sex written in, or perhaps their roles and personalities tended to get mixed up. Either way, it was definitely sex for sex’s sake in this one (and vanilla sex at that).

Out of four…
Overall Read: ♥
Sex Heat: ♥
Plot: ♥

I am struggling with giving this a one overall since I’ve read much worse, I just don’t feel it was worth the time I invested, especially as it had so much promise! I would perhaps recommend this for a newbie who is trying to get a feel for reading about m/m sex, without caring much about the characters, plot, or investment into the story – everyone else will be a bit bored and disappointed.

Lawyer Tobias Archer has thirty days and thirty thousand dollars to turn around his fourth house, “a quaint little Colonial in desperate need of some TLC.” There is quite a bit to deal with, including the overwhelming smell of cat urine and squirrels in the shed. Luckily, Toby has hired contractor Ven Parrish to help with the renovations. The story spans the various stages of the “flip” throughout the month including appraisal, demolition, break in, completion, and staging. Along the way, the relationship between the men follows a very similar path, with interesting results.

Flipping Out is an enjoyable story about building a relationship. The interactions between Toby and Ven are playful from the start, with a bit of teasing going on. There is an instant mutual attraction and it leads to highly erotic and steamy sex scenes. As this is the first book in a series, we don’t get too much background about the men but hopefully we will learn more about them as the series continues.

I got a kick out of Ven’s two spoiled Rottweilers Blade and Whistler and am anxious to learn the names of the other three. A particular favorite of mine was the character of Ven’s brother Vashon, affectionately known as “Cake”. He is slow but still able to do excellent work alongside Ven and the relationship between the brothers is touching. This is the beginning of a Chaser series of three books and I am definitely looking forward to the next two releases. This is a wonderfully fun and light-hearted start to what is sure to be a great series!
