The next Lakandian is here…

Somewhere in the Mountain Province amongst the Ga’dang tribes, lies the highland town of Nabbobawan. It’s in this particular barangay where our story of the Ga’dang epic hero Lumalindaw begins. As is true with all Lakandians, he is but a few years young and a child at heart, but his physique is that of a full-grown man. He has already embraced his role as Lakandian and has been revered as the champion of many tribes and peoples across the Cagayan Valley.

Lumalindaw is imbued with the power to summon The Voice of Nanolay, giving him the ability to be heard through vast distances and across the dense jungles and staggering mountains. Its intensity can kill birds in the sky or knock down trees with a word.

But destiny awaits him in another barangay where he must face a powerful dalaketnon, a creature of darkness and evil. And in this fateful meeting, he will come face to face with his personal realities as his test of strength intersects with the growing challenges of his evolving character.

Accompanying him in this adventure is Kidul, an anito trapped inside an enchanted ayoding, more commonly known as a zither, who helps Lumalindaw navigate his adventures as he, the young warrior is slowly coming into his own. Through these mythical exploits, Lumalindaw will learn what it means to be a man worthy of life, love, and the honor of being a true Lakandian.

I started a little late with this book because of life stuff, but I finally got around to reading it. Oh boy, was it worth the wait!

After reading the stories of 2 Lakandians, I can confidently say that each character was written very differently as they should. Each book had a different tone as each hero lived very different lives. Taguwasi was more of a rescue-adventure story and Lam-ang was a coming of age monster quest.

Lumalindaw is more of a comedy-action book with a very heartbreaking ending, an ending which leads directly to Taguwasi. I really should have read them chronologically. The banter between Lumalindaw and his spirit guide Kidul was super funny. This was also a deep dive into the world of the Poons and Kaluwalhatian with an amazing battle scene that I won't spoil here.

Overall, another excellent book from Sir Herbert! I'm just waiting for my next paycheck to buy the fourth book Urduja! So excited!

This review is long overdue, but better late than never.

The tale of Lumilandaw is not as popular in our country as Lam-Ang is. I have never heard of the original story, so this book is what introduced me to the world of Lumalindaw and his people. And since Lam-Ang and Lumalindaw are both Lakandians, I am looking forward to how the author will tell his tale in a way that will make it feel like its own rather than a replica of Lam-Ang. But I am not disappointed. The storytelling is completely different from the first book, yet it still gives out that adventurous vibes.

In this book, we already met Lumalindaw as a grown-up, well, at least years older than Lam-Ang when we followed his story. This gives a new perspective on how a Lakandian (like demigods) live their lives at different ages and places. I might say Lumalindaw is more entertaining. I laughed out loud a lot of times, and it felt cozy. At some point, I even thought the stakes were not that high. But when the story reached its peak, it plunged right into chaos and pain. And damn that ending is so painful that it will make you want to know what happens next.

Moreover, we get to see the other world and what's the status of the war that had been going on for years. Since this is the second book, I won't say much. But our knowledge of the other world had expanded quite a lot. We get to meet new characters, especially Kidul, Lumalindaw's katiwala. We also met new enemies that were far more dangerous than those we had encountered.

I won't spoil anything, but compared to the first book, I think this one is my favorite. I am so excited to read the rest of the series and know more about the world and the enemy.

Highly recommend! Please read the first book and dive into this book as soon as possible.
