The Eldar craftworlds – massive drifting starships that are home to the last survivors of a race that once ruled the galaxy – are scattered across the stars. Now the Eldar teeter upon the precipice of annihilation and must battle constantly against the other races of the galaxy, even resorting to piracy in their fight to avoid extinction. Codex: Eldar is one of a series of supplements for Warhammer 40,000. Each book in the series describes in detail an army, its history and its heroes.
A guidebook on how to play the Eldar faction in Warhammer 40k. Yet, at the time when I purchased it, I was merely interested by the specifics on the Eldar civilization, which used to be my preferred team on Dawn of War.
A fearsome ancient species, the Eldars have lost their hold over the universe yet, they still master the arcanes of travel in the Warp, a parallel, pure-energy dimension allowing them ingress and egress in the physical universe. As a consequence, they are able to teleport with ease, granting them the lead when it comes to guerilla tactics and attrition wars.
I have grown out of favouring them. Their frailty and poor opening offering a narrow range of units and fewer options than most opponents in the first stages of the conflict being too much of a drawback and too high a price to pay for versatility and flexibility in the late game. Enjoying skirmishes on small to medium-sized maps, I took up playing factions with a stronger onset, such as Chaos, Necrons and Orks. Again, this applies to Dawn of War games from the first installment to Dark Crusade, as I have never played to the board game :)
I think this is my favourite codex of the new bunch so far. The fluff really is excellently written. I have the feeling the rules do not live up to it in places, but that is a different story all together. I am interested to see if the Iyanden supplement will be as good...
It was okay for a codex. It's more up to date than the last one I read, but still leaves out some new details on the Eldar. I enjoy reading these, but they really need to update to 7th Edition. It was alright. The codexes are improving at least! 4-Stars.
