Shell Maverick is so close to getting her life together. Right when she’s about to turn the corner from hot mess to self-sufficient, functioning adult, she crosses paths with the one guy she hoped to never see again: Evan Lawrence, her childhood nemesis. The worst part? He’s taller, smugger, and sexier than ever.
A coerced coffee catch-up and a little drunk texting later, Shell finds herself entrenched in a fiery fling with the only human on her bad side, and she hates that it’s more fun than all previous hookups combined.
Evan makes his living exposing people's secrets, but he wants his own secrets to stay hidden. After their surprise reunion, Shell is in prime position to discover things that should never see the light of day. And yet, he can’t force himself to stay away when messing with the bombshell is more fun than ever. Will the truth carry them into the new year together, or are old enemies best left forgot?
I received an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This was my first Mia Sparrow book and I will certainly be reading more! Auld Lang Syne was a very cute read! I loved the holiday theme (though I wouldn't classify it as a book that should only be read at the holidays).
Shell and Evan knew each other growing up and were very competitive - each using the competition to push themselves to do better. After high school, they lost touch with each other. The story revolves around their chance meeting at an event and the events that follow. The FMC struggles to reconcile her hatred of the MMC with the undeniable chemistry they have as adults. The MMC struggles with being fully transparent with FMC as a way to protect her from his own life's drama. The MMC was absolutely adorable and I loved reading his POV because he was completely enamored by the FMC.
Overall, this was a quick, cute read that I really enjoyed. I felt Shell and Evan stuck with me after reading, they were relatable and likable characters.
Auld Lang Syne is part of the Experience Series, but can be read as a standalone (I did - but I will be going back to read the others!)
- I don't trust you, and I don't like the way I feel when I'm around you. It's been a long time, but apparently it hasn't been long enough. I don't want to make nice with you, catching up as if we're old buddies." - His strong hands gripped my hips, long fingers digging into me through layers of clothing. I bit back a sigh. I was losing, and hated that I didn't hate it. - December went from amazing and full of hope to a smoking pile of rubble, and I needed a shoulder to cry on. This was why I let no one into my heart; they were bound to crack it in two. Or, in this case, smash it to pieces. - "Whatever you say, I'm not going to see you differently. You'll always be the same pain in the ass to me." - Since I was old enough to want girls that way, you were the brightest, the sexiest, the smartest. You were the light in my darkness. You always were. And you always will be."
Review: What a great follow up story to The Mystery Guy, I loved how we go a little more behind the scenes so to speak of our beloved Lia & Ralph and then got into the great story about the best friend. I enjoyed the banter between the characters and the sarcasm. The way they loved each other was clear from the start. Another great read Mia!
Tropes: - Romantasy - Hidden Romance - Enemies to Lovers - Guy Falls first
In this novella we have Shell and Evan two characters in a New Year's holiday romance. The story has some hot, steamy sexy times. These two characters were in school together and there was academic rivalry and some pranks. They meet again as adults and they begin to date but there are secrets kept that ruin things. This was a great romance to read as we prepare for the new year. This is the second book in a three book series.
