Welcome to the first book in the Sons of de Lohr series – Christopher de Lohr’s sons (Rise of the Defender) finally have their day.
The Lion Cubs are about to take charge!
Richard “Roi” de Lohr is the second son of Richard the Lionheart’s champion, Christopher de Lohr. Roi was raised in the finest homes and with the finest training. Emerging as a powerful and intelligent knight, he married the woman he wanted and enjoyed the life of prestige he had earned. When his wife gave birth to a son, Roi’s life was complete.
Until tragedy struck.
When Roi’s wife dies in childbirth with their second child, he is devastated. But he’s a de Lohr and de Lohrs don’t crumble. He raises his son alone, proud that the lad promises to take his place among the great de Lohrs. He even arranges a marriage for his son with the daughter of a prestigious lord, an heiress of great wealth. Everything is going as planned.
But tragedy strikes again. Roi’s son is killed in a freak accident, leaving Roi shattered beyond repair. The prestigious lord, however, has no sympathy and demands that Roi fulfill the marriage contract or risk losing a strong alliance. With Roi’s son gone, that means Roi, a widower, must marry the young heiress he’s never even met.
Lady Diara le Bec is that heiress.
From one of the finest families in England, that prestige masked a problem - naturally vivacious and charming, Diara has earned herself a scandalous reputation that Roi wasn’t told about. He’s rather reserved by nature, serious and deliberate, and when he finds himself married to a woman who can light up an entire room with simply her smile, he’s taken aback. There are whispers of Diara’s flirtations and the men she has conquered. Roi suspects he has gotten himself into a miserable marriage. But that soon changes as he comes to know the lightning bolt known as Diara. Deedee.
And so begins a love story for the ages.
Treachery and deceit, it seems, aim directly for Roi and Diara as their relationship deepens. Join them as they navigate the turbulent waters of a romance that was never supposed to happen… and a joy that they could have never dreamt of.

This was a good read from start to finish. Starts with the death of Roi son. Roi is trying to cope with the death of his son . When his betrothed father comes insisting that one of the other male from the family, marry his daughter. Roi has been a widower for 14 years. He decides he will be the one to honour the betrothed contract. Even though he doesn’t want to marry again. Diara is glad to get away from her devious father. Good story with lots happening. Brings you near to tears and also makes you laugh.
Roi and Diara, what a dynamic couple. Their chemistry fairly streams off the pages. From their first meeting they are both very much sold on the prospect of marriage, and the idea of having a future together.
I say it frequently with Kathryn’s books, but make sure you have tissues ready, there’s a few moments to make your eyes leak. She has a wonderful way with words and always gives that little bit more in the emotional department, which I love.
This is an action packed, fast moving read that is hard to put down. Consequently I was up late again until I was finished, but so glad for it. Sometimes you just need a really good book like this to rekindle the joy of reading, this definitely does it for me. Excellent reading.
I received an Arc copy of this book and chose to post this review
So many characters to keep track of l, this would probably not be the best book to start in with. If you don’t mind not knowing the characters mentioned because there’s a lot of them and who they are to the mc’s then you should be good. A marriage of duty the two characters easily hit off and are very enamored together. Sometimes reading these books I am so glad that I was born in this age. To be called someone’s property and only be worth based on your title or money is horrid. The I love you’s after barely knowing each other has started to give me pause.. it’s understandable to want to look to best of an inescapable situation. But damn give me more pages of connection and tension. The FMC is incredibly kind, friendly and charismatic to the point she has men pinning after her. The MMC who is older widower coming from a knightly family with great connections. Is patient, understanding and smitten without FMC. I have to add that what I gathered from the book that it would be better to read the series as whole. Where you would be able to get a more detailed story of the characters and their lives.
Roi de Lohr has had a life of tragedy. Harassed by an allied father, he gives in and marries his daughter. The one that was suppose to be his son's wife. It's love at first sight for Roi, but her father takes revenge when Roi's retaliation for a slight is physical. Roi is lured into a trap and Christopher de Lor takes his revenge. A book that keeps you quickly turning the page for more. Some descriptive sex. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book
Lion of Twilight by Kathryn Le Veque is another of her long line of hit medieval romance novels. This one focused on Christopher de Lohr’s second son, Richard, know as Roi. Roi is adjudicator who solves legal problems for his king and locally. He has seen forty summers, lost his wife fourteen years ago, and has just heard word that he has lost his only son. His grief is deep. He rides to tell his parents, Christopher and Dustin, instructing his staff to bring Beck’s body to Lioncross Abbey for burial. Roi had allowed himself to be nagged into a betrothal for his son, Becker to Lady Diara le Bec by her father. It was a good match, but one Becket didn’t particularly want, or any betrothal for that matter. Now Lady Diara’s father must be notified of Beck’s death, which he did. When he arrived at Lioncross Abbey he discovered that Robin le Bec and was already demanding, loudly, that the betrothal be made good, with a substitute de Lohr groom. Roi was beyond furious that Robin had behaved so and let him know, but instead of sacrificing any of his brothers or nephews, he assumed the betrothal himself and left to meet his intended. He had seen her when he took Beck to meet her, but had not spent any time with her. What he discovered was an amazing young woman half his age.
No one can write a romance like leVeque. Roi was a wonderful character, a true de Lohr: brave, handsome, and intelligent. A well-written characters. Diara had a reputation and not a good one. She was beautiful and outgoing. Jealous women when she fostered made her out to be little better than a whore. She didn’t want Roi to have his reputation endangered over her. By the time she told him. It was too late, he was infatuated. The story took a turn toward the end, endangering Roi but as always his family and a friend intervened. She was a much better person than her father as it turned out. Even his wife was glad to be rid of him. Roi and Diara lived a long and happy life and had many children, as is always the case with le Veque’s novels. A welcome addition to the de Lohr sage.
I was invited to read a free e-ARC of Lion of Twilight by Dragonblade, through Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are mine. #Netgalley #Dragonblade #KathrynLeVeque #LionOfTwilight #DeLohr
I was very busy recently with very, very little time available to read and when I had some time to myself, I needed to read various non fictional books to catch up with work related stuff. But….. enough is enough!
I’m a big Le Veque fan because this author always delivers and before I’m even through with one of her books I’m already looking forward to reading her next one. I considered reading “Lion of Twilight” the most rewarding way to return to my fictional world!
The book sounded promising and seemed to have all my beloved features: set in medieval times, a “dark” hero, a strong heroine , a strong set of subcharacters and a villain who would be punished for his wrongdoing. Exactly what I was looking for! So far so good but this time I closed the book with mixed feeling, which had me thinking and finally I came to the following conclusion: It’s personal and has nothing to do with the book! What I’m trying to say is that it just didn’t sit well with me how Roi dealt with the loss of his son. Roi’s son didn’t impact the plot at all. His death, on the other hand, was a major angle point in the plot elaboration. Of course Roi and his family grieved! A lot of space was allocated to this process and some very deep and satisfying conversations between Roi and his parents or later in the book, between Roi and his wife took place in this context. Consequently I shouldn’t be focused so much on this aspect. True. However, looking back, I think Roi’s actions were incompatible with any mourning process and therefore incomprehensible to me. Unfortunately, what I don’t understand or if I can’t relate to something, it leaves me with an “unsatisfactorily” aftertaste, so that I just couldn’t war up to Roi…… As I already mentioned, it’s personal and doesn’t have to do anything with the book.
Generally speaking and besides above very personal line of thinking, the book was a classical Le Veque: well written, entertaining, a gripping romance and very nice HEA.
Love Comes Anytime or Any Age This is a Story of Second-Chances . From Tragedy to New Beginnings. Never to Old for finding Love. After a his wife died and never thought about starting over. He dedicated his life to make his son be the best Knight and follow in his footsteps. Only a horrible accident happened and took his life. How much grief could he handle ? The.Lady that his son was betrothed to had a nasty Father and Earl who wanted him to make good on the betrothal. How could he marry her though ? The Honorable explanation was Him ! What would he do with a young wife ? Did he want to start over agin and open his heart for more pain ? There are many questions to be answered along with a compassionate tale. Richard de Lohr the second son of the great Christopher de Lohr was known as Roi. He was mid age now with two daughter and his son as a Knight following in his footsteps. With his wife gone for many years he lived to see his son succeed. Until the fatal day he got news of the accident. Lady Diara le Bec was promised to Richards son. Her father was not a liked man. He had a mean streak and cared nothing about his daughter or wife. It was all about his controlling nature. Richard. And Diara meet when he is now betrothed to her. The Earl gets shadier and meaner. Diara never knew of loving and caring she is getting a new start. The two really have a connection . Age doesn’t seem to matter only love and compassion is what counts. Another Kathryn LeVeque special where tissues are needed . A Beautifully Told Story !
The Amazon blurb is incorrect Richard 'Roi' de Lohr's wife died in childbirth with their third child.
The precise has been written. 43 year old Richard, third son of Christopher de Lohr must marry his deceased son's betrothed.
Slowly he is charmed and falls for the beautiful Diara who sadly has an unfortunate whispering story attached to her that reaches the ears of the many de Lohr cousins. Richard champions his wife-to-be and the negative unfounded rumours are quickly and firmly squashed. However Diana's father is the key adversary in this tale and things cones to a violent and swift end after Richards answers a all for assistance from his father in law.
Now I really liked this story. It was fast moving and KLV was not coy about the wedding party the songs or the consumption.
But something was niggling and I realised it was unusual for de lohr stories to have so many personnel. The multitude of male relatives, brothers, cousins nephews and grandchildren were present and just once or twice I thought I was reading a De Wolfe novel.
Also there was a lot more casual written modern slang - a lot. Quite jarring! Some medieval courtesies seemed to have completely vanished, e.g. cursteying and knight's addressing seniors as 'my Lord'.
As always wonderful to welcome Christopher and Dustin deLohr. This book was enjoyable and highly recommend this new book from KLV.

Yet another outstanding book that reminds me why Kathryn Le Veque is the Queen of Medieval Romance! Widowed Roi agrees to a marriage between his son and his friend's daughter, but when his son dies his "friend" still expects him to fulfill the marriage contract.
Diara is very clever and shrewd, wise beyond her years, and even she recognizes what a weasel her father is. I really loved her character, her charming determination to do what's right and stand up for herself.
Roi is one of the most romantic heroes ever. He may be grieving too much at first to allow his heart to open up to his new wife, but he never wavers in his steadfast loyalty and leadership. When she tried to pull back because of the baggage she brought to his doorstep, his response nearly had me swooning on the floor! "I want to protect you. I want your burdens to be mine. I want to feel needed, because I most certainly need you."
I love even the battle scenes, and I especially love the swift and sure administration of justice. I adored the way his family rose to the occasion, despite a few hiccups along the way, and I loved the way Diara connected with Roi's young daughters. The HEA and epilogue were perfect in every way.
If you love timeless devotion set in the medieval world of knights of honor, then you need to grab this book. I can't recommend it highly enough. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
Richard (Roi) de Lohr is son to Christopher de Lohr. He lost his wife 14 years ago in childbirth and never remarried. Now his son is betrothed to the daughter of an ally. Diara is the daughter. When Roi’s son is killed in an accident, the ally demands another de Lohr marry his daughter instead. Roi takes on that responsibility so none of his single male relatives are forced to wed her. Despite the 20+ year age difference, Roi and Diara seem to be a good match. They become close very quickly. But nothing is ever easy. Gossip, rumors, deceit, betrayal, vengeance, and an ambush will keep you turning the pages of this book. I have read more than 60 books by this author and then took a break to explore some other authors. So this is the first KLV book I’ve read in a while. It was so nice to revisit the de Lohr family in this book. KLV makes you feel part of the the family in Her writing. Great familiar characters and some new ones as well. Off to the next one. I have 8 more waiting in my Kindle library.
Contracts, Deception, Betrayal, Family: Wow! Definitely deserves more than 5 stars. This story and characters blew me away. I can't say enough about the indepth emotions this author brings to the reader. You better have your tissue box handy. The story begins with a happy betrothal but then soon that cannot be fulfilled. Family challenges change to a very disturbing and unwanted betrothal. Or is it really? A dynamic story awaits from this point on. This story becomes a learning curve for Roi and Diara. We follow the two through many beautiful situations, along with disastrous anger that has vicious flames shooting off the pages, several heartfelt sweet honest confessions and a bit of humor throughout that takes us into an extremely terrifying conclusion and a happy ending. I loved this story and I highly recommend any book by this author. They are always dynamic stories. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy for my honest opinion.
Well-written and exciting, this romance opens with a tragedy that evolves into a beautiful love story, one that is almost destroyed due to the greed and duplicity of grasping men. Roi has lost his only and most beloved son, but that does not stop the grasping father of Lady Diara le Bec from demanding that the marriage contract is honored. Roi de Lohr has already lost everything that is important to him and he sees no reason to refuse marriage to the Earl's beautiful daughter. The author brings out the brutality and harshness of medieval England, including the plotting that would bring about the demise of a good man. However, retribution is swift and decisive, freeing more than one individual from a miserable life. Roi and Diara's future seemed uncertain at one point but ultimately they gain more than they lose. I received a copy of this exciting and page-turning novel as a gift through Dragonblade Publishing and NetGalley and this is my honest and voluntary review.
I still say a box of tissues needs to come with the purchase of a Kathryn Le Veque book!! As usual, I did some ugly crying at some of the scenes in the book but that's ok, it's a true sign of a good author who can wring every emotion out of you while reading her words. This is Roi and Diara's story, one that will have you reading late into the night because it's just hard to put the book down once you start reading it.
With Roi being double Diara's age, I wasn't too sure how that would work out but one needn't worry, he is exactly the kind of man she needs in her life!! It was instant attraction but I loved how they took the time to get to know each other better and let love naturally take over. I loved the interactions between them, as well as with the family, and I was thrilled to see so many beloved characters from previous books make an appearance.
Kathryn Le Veque continues to impress me with her stories and I, for one, will never tire of reading them!!
The de Lohr dynasty just as the de Wolfe's never fail to produce entertaining and satisfying characters. KLV's vivid imagination manages to devise a never ending crop of exciting stories involving likeable characters. In fact whereas I have often commented on her very terse basic style, I noticed that in this book, her writing is more fluid with the occasional description of nature and clothes. I would not qualify her style as lyrical yet , but she is making progress and there were very few of her set phrases, so characteristic of her earlier books. The only element I was not very comfortable with was the cold blooded murder by the Executioner Knights. I can't remember such a scene, described in so many details in the actual Executioner Knights series. By the way, it is one of her best series and I would encourage anyone who has not read it to do so. As usual i am looking forward to her next book. Thank you KLV
Loved It! What a Fantastic Story! Lion of Twilight will keep you spellbound as it takes you on a rollercoaster ride that weaves a story from beginning to end with threads of intrigue, greed, suspense and family unity. Kathryn Le Veque has written a story that's filled it with a great cast of characters that will hold your attention as their individual personalities become more than just part of the tale they come off the pages and pull you in into the story, sizzling passion, hearts ache, the book flowed well from one subject to another without being forced, and the plot brims with tension building twist and turns. With setting descriptions and action sequences that are wonderfully vivid that brings the story to life and as the unrest escalates the suspense builds and uncertainties abound which brings this read together perfectly!
This is my first Le Veque read. I really enjoyed her style; can’t wait to dive into the plethora of books she’s written! This book is the first in the Sons of de Lohr series. Roi and Diara weave a beautiful love story. A few obstacles in their way but their love never waivers. This was a refreshing aspect since the typical historical romance usually has a big misunderstanding or argument that causes the reader to have angst and tension…this did not. Outside detractors try to interfere but true love always overcomes! The only reason I gave 4 stars is because I reserve a 5 star rating for books that are superior in every way. I believe 5 stars get thrown around too easily, hence the 4 star review. But this book is absolutely worth the read!
Richard "Roi" de Lohr was pestered into betrothing his son to the daughter of an acquaintance. A tragedy will change everything.
Diara le Bec has a reputation for being overly friendly with men, but it's only because the women she has known didn't want to be friends with her.
In this medieval romance we meet lots of old friends from previous books by this author. You will need a huge box of tissues because there is a lot of emotion. As with any large family the high spirits or sadness will eventually lead to fights and giggles. Our characters are absolutely fantastic and you can't help falling in love with them. As usual from this author ,I couldn't put the book down.
My favourite so far (not the series it’s new, book from this author) I loved the characters especially Roi and Diana. But all the secondary ones as well. I love the huge families and their history that forms the foundation of these stories.
The blurb more than covers everything so it’s just my opinion you’re getting. And it’s good, if you like this author and her books then this is a must. I enjoyed it so much I read it in one sitting.
Not 5*? Very, very close I am very stingy with my stars after all.
I voluntarily read a review copy kindly provided by the publisher and NetGalley.
Lion of Twilight is the latest crowning work of Kathryn. It is fast paced, romantic, and contains all of Kathryn's outstanding writing skills. I have read all of her books, some several times. As medieval worlds go, she is the best. However, I did notice that her newer stories are shorter, and I miss her detailed description of a glorious world, steeped in honor, integrity, suspense, and intrigue. I have always excitedly waited for a new book to publish, and will continue doing so. Your master pieces stand alone, likely the Wolf, and the early beginnings of deLohr. When ever I get bored, I pull out your first books, in their beautiful length, and get lost in your magic. You are my hero.
Lovely story. Rio has just lost his son. After much herranging Rio had bethrothed Beckett to Robin's daughter, Diara. On Beckett's death Robin zips off to ask Rio's father Christopher to provide a different de Lohr son or grandson. Rio is livid at Robin's crass behaviour and says if anyone's going to marry Diara, it would be him.
Diara is pleased to be marrying a more mature man rather than the juvenile, arrogant Beckett. Good romance and then Rio has to deal with big betrayal.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
🌟🌟🌟🌟 This book is so good, heart warming and has great nuggets of wisdom. It deals with death of an adult child, arranged marriage, politics, battles, age gap arranged marriages and a romance that warms the heart. Wgilst touching on such heavy topics, it never drags you heavily, its a very easy read, a worthy read. This is the first book by this author that I've read but now I have to read them all, I lived the book so much. It is part of a series however I had no problems in reading as a standalone thankfully.
Wow isn't enough to explain the enjoyment I garnered from reading this book. I fell in love with midevil history in 9th grade umpteen years ago. Then I found a book by Kathryn LeVeque and I was hooked. She gives you everything you want in her books. Family bonds, happiness, tears, brothers/brothers-in-law comeraderodary same with sisters etc. She is so explicit from birth to death she draws you in and you can't put her books down. My suggestion to anyone reading her books don't bring it to bed you will not fall asleep especially if you love midevil romance.
I love this authors books and this was an excellent story. You normally hear about the Wolfe's family, but I'm glad to read about Chris's children. Roi was grieiving his lost son, Beckett, and didn't know how to cope. But then he stepped in for his son with his betrothed, this is where the story gets interesting and deadly. Betrayal, fighting and danger. Not enough stars to rate this book. HEA.
Loved reading about the infamous de Lohr family again, the children, grandchildren the brother's had me laughing and crying as only this author can seem to do. Especially when there is lack of respect towards a female, and grandma Dustin & mother Honey, are pulling ears & hair on a young knight to apologize for lack of respect! Couldn't stop laughing, love this family, can't wait to read more in this series. KLV never disappoints.
This was definitely a love story for the ages! Kathryn always writes stories that pull all the emotions out of us each time we read one of her stories. Parts can be brutal, yet she gives us humor, tears, second chances, and gives us the best love stories. I loved this story and reading about one of Christopher de Lohr's sons. Thank goodness there are so many more sons and grandsons to write about. I love your stories Kathryn!
Richard deLohr nicknamed Roi was the son of Christopher deLohr of Lion Cross Abby. Roi betrothed his only son Beckett to Robin le Bec of Cheltenham’s daughter Diara le Bec to secure an alliance. Roi’s son Beckett was thrown from a wild horse and died from a broken neck. Roi as a widow stepped in to marry Diara after Robin became upset and either wanted the money from the betrothal given back or another deLohr to marry his daughter. This was a great story.
Well, where do I start. This one brought out all my emotions! I laughed, I cried, got angry, got sad, and got happy! It was wonderful being a part of the Defender's family again. Roi and Diana's story is everything that a romance should be! Kathryn LeVeque, you have done it again ! I will always choose you!
A wonder story filled with all the emotions that this author always pulls out with her heartfelt writing! Yes even in Medieval times, which were brutal and hard, love can find a way!!
Starting with a tragedy, but a journey that will bring two people together, will keep you turning the pages and not able to stop until the end!
Roi and Diara's story keeps your interest throughout all the twists and turns of the engaging plot. Through great hardship comes a romance forged in steel.Happiness is granted these lovers once they overcome amazing odds in order to be together.
