Oklahoma Run

Rate this book
The settlement of the Indian Territory in the late 19th century is recorded through the experiences of one family, the Sheridans, viewed through the young eyes of Lainey who grows up with the land, and bears a comfortable air of domesticity. For Bushrod, the new country has a challenge which the gentler Allegra can never really share; the birth of a boy there, after a hard pregnancy, ends with his death when he gets the "flux," and is the cause of one of several separations through the years as Allegra goes home to Missouri. But for Lainey, there is always the solidarity with her father and the land he has chosen. There is also the fascination for Quirt Kearney, a drifter, which makes her forget Arch - her first beau following a candy pull - and when Quirt hightails it off without her, she thinks she has no one. Bush dies, in a cyclone disaster, and Allegra leaves for good-but it is Lainey who returns to find that Arch is waiting for her.....

I remember liking this book when I was about 15 or 16–IOW, decades ago. I think it’s a sweet romance but not what I would now call “historical.”

This is the book that started me reading, really reading. I couldn't put it down as a 10 year old. I have read it 1-2 times every year since. Without saying how old I am, I've read it a lot!

Oklahoma Run By Alberta Wilson Constant is about the Oklahoma Run in 1889; It follows a girl named Lainey and her family. We see the trials of starting a new territory and creating a new life with new challenges. I really enjoyed this book. It was entertaining and it was easy to keep the pages going. I enjoyed the character development and it felt like the book was written about some real family who went through these ordeals. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys books that are full of adventure and plot twists. It was a little bit dry for the first chapter but it picks up real fast and stays entertaining. I learned about the Oklahoma run more than I had previously known.

I am in love with this book. I happened to pick it up at our local friends of the library sale, and it sat around for the longest time before I actually read it. I love historical fiction, and I found myself excited to get back to this book whenever i had a few minutes of downtime. I would highly recommend Oklahoma Run to anyone of any age.

I was attracted to this book because my grandfather rode in the Cherokee Strip run as a boy. This book is well written, full of adventure , romance, and historical events. I really enjoyed it.

I had this book when I was young and it disappeared. It was a favorite and I just got a copy of it and loved it. Now, that might be because it was like an old friend, but it is a young girl's life moving with her family from Missouri to the "Territory." It is wonderful, there are the happy times, the frightening times and the very very sad times. But, to me, it is a strong book of strong people who just did what had to be done.

So glad to see the good reviews! Read this in my teens, lost the book and bought another copy from a second hand bookstore. Fell in love with the characters and the times.
