Something dark is brewing in Europe... Weeks after the events in Philadelphia that saw them come face to face with the Sorcerer King, Mae Jin resumes her job as a mortuary assistant at Grandview General and Nikolai Stanisic goes to Prague to train with the Council of the Moon. When Mae stumbles upon something strange during an autopsy and more dead bodies with similar findings turn up, she soon realizes their enemy is up to no good again. Meanwhile, Vlad Vissarion is approached by an infamous Colombian cartel demanding an introduction to Budimir Volkov, one of his Bratva's most senior generals. A man he knows harbors ill feelings toward him by virtue of their shared past. When Budimir's grandson Roman is ambushed and kidnapped by Oscar Beneventi, a chain of events ensues that results in Nikolai and his familiar Alastair absorbing a dangerous new power into their bodies. New and deadly allies come to the fore as everyone converges on Prague to stop the Dark Council's next scheme. Will Mae, Nikolai, and Vlad be able to save Roman from Oscar and Barquiel's clutches and uncover their nefarious intentions? Or will the Sorcerer King succeed in moving one step closer to his goals?

This book was great! Nice twists, great characters and I love the familiars!!! It is such a fun series and I can't wait to see how they all get along in the next book.
We get more gangsters this time. Seriously these are the most accommodating criminals I have ever read about. I get Vlad’s uncle not being a truly horrible person. He did what he had to for his sister’s sake. But now they are making Cortes be a walking punch-line. His people were the traffickers in the first book. He is scum. But hey he’s not really bad. The Bratva head who is over Yuliy also took to crime in order to protect people-one of whom we meet when her people attack our group. But wait-she’s an old lady so Mae can’t fight her because Yoo-Mi will be mad. The woman attacked her!! Mae’s mom would probably be OK with Mae taking action to make sure it doesn’t happen again. But again the bad guy that the actual Bratva leader was worried about has changed. Yeah sure. Next time knock instead of blowing the door down. Then we get to poor Roman. His actual age isn’t given except to say he is a teenager in school. I was thinking 13-14 year old. The fact that now he’s in the running to be Mae’s “consort” I am hoping he is 17-18. It is still gross. I loved the first two series so much that I purchased the all of the books after reading the first two. I will still read this series because there are very good parts to the books, but I doubt I will purchase them.
Thankfully not literally, but I love Mae, Brimstone, and Hellreaver. They are my favorite trio. Not only are they full of snark, and getting snarkier with every book, the conversations these three have are fodder for many a laugh and happiness.
“‘I’m just a glorified can opener to you, aren’t I?’ Hellreaver said sullenly. Mae swallowed a sigh. ‘Look, it was in the heat of the moment.’ She brightened and patted him. ‘And you did great. You saved us all. Why, you’re the hero of the hour!’ Hellreaver hesitated before lightening against her chest, practically vibrating with smugness. ‘It worries me how susceptible he is to compliments,’ Brimstone told Mae.”
Pure gold, and I loved every moment with them. When you add in action-packed, magical excitement, a tingly love triangle—I do love me some Nikolai and Vlad, witches and sorcerers aplenty, and new faces that have begging for more—well, mostly one and their mouthy friend, it’s a win-win-win-win. I can’t wait to see what happens next and I’m sending Mae some extra sweets to tide her over as I think she may need them.
I loved the third instalment of the Witch Queen series, the newest potential—ok no spoilers—is kind of cool and I’m looking forward to seeing his character arc in future books. We’re introduced to a few new characters, the conversation in the closing chapter is priceless and had me snorting my tea down my nose at one point. The consort triangle is skewing a little and I do hope it continues in that direction, which is rare for me as I usually go for the… (not telling you that either!). Love the book, the series and the world that AD Starrling has created. Obviously this is third in a series but the series is the third set in this ‘world’. If you love reading I would seriously consider starting with ‘Hunted’ the first book in the ‘Seventeen’ series, once you’ve finished that series, move on to the ‘Legion’ series. Then you’ll have a really good grounding as to who and what every is. And just to clarify… I loved it!
Mae Jin, Vlad, and Nicolai must again team up to go against the Dark Council and their attempts to take over the world. The three of them must again combine their abilities to defeat the Dark Councils plans. Mae, Vlad and Nicolai lives had started to return to normal when the latest threat arises. New friends are found, new abilities develop, secrets of who parents are and a new magic user vis for Mae’s attention. Will the three be able to overcome the latest threat? Will they be able to manage the new truths that have been brought to light? And what the heck is going on with Mae’s mom’s live life? I love ADs Starlings stories her imagination and imagery in her stories are just fun, so entertaining and you feel like you are there with Mae, Vlad and Nicolai! Enjoy!
Okay so I enjoyed this book but not as much as the previous one. I know it’s a fantasy book but seriously Cortes (the human trafficker, yes that one) is a nice guy with a tragic past. Roman whom I’d assumed to be about 14 must be older but no age is given. So I liked this but just didn’t love it. I also thought the next book was the final one but that’s not the case. Now that’s my fault for not checking first. My problem is this feels like a series that could run on and on. I hope it doesn’t because it’s getting a bit samey in places. Same bad guys, big fight some huge new spell or power and a portal.
Leading up to the release of the new book, I re read the previous two books.
The new one is a welcome addition to the series. When you have a series that includes, demons angels, witches, sorcerers and magic, as well as great writing and action scenes, you don't need anything else! The interactions between characters, especially Mae and her familiars, has had me really laughing out loud.
The book also had a more sinister feel throughout, thanks to the dark council's experiments. Cant wait for the next one.
These books get better and better. This is my third reading (not sure why I didn't review before) and I am still completely enthralled with the story. There are several threads to this story with characters old and new. The Dark Council are abducting magic users again, Vlad is forced to work with the Bacata Cartel, Nikolai is training in Prague where the story takes place and a young man, who turns out to be a relation of Vlad's is kidnapped. The characters, world building and plot are excellent. I would love to spend an hour in the author's head, her imagination must be amazing.
So in love with this series, this book book three did not disappoint. Sometimes thete are books in series that are what I call throws in that they do not being anything new to the series and if you did not read it you would miss nonething. This book is not anything like that it had many things to say for it self and added much to the series. It in my humble opinion is a must read. I cannot wait for the next book. I thoroughly devoured and enjoyed it.
I'm thoroughly enjoying this entertaining and engaging series with its incredible MCs, action, adventure, and danger. Brimstone and Hellreaver are my favorites, and let us not forget the sizzling hot love interests that surround Mae. One can only hope she sees the benefits of a RH relationship with those yummy men. I can hardly wait to see what happens next. I voluntarily read an ARC and this is my honest review.
I finished this book this weekend. I could not put it down. This Book added one more main character, from Witch Queen # 1 and # 2 and it kept bouncing between 4 main characters a lot - in the actions scenes that was were very cool and helpful to see what was happening in other areas of the mystery. Interesting slow romance with the Queen.
Mae Jin. Vlad and Nic on the trail of the sorcerer King and his evil minions. Lots of action but also lots of humor which is so refreshing in supernatural books. a.d. Starrling does such a good job of handling these supernatural stories with light dose of humor. Chris leaves a little bit of attention when fighting evil doers.
Exciting as ever. Looks like Vlad and Nickolai may have another contender in their way to Mae’s heart. As with all the spin off stories in the 17 realm this is just as good, fast and full of lots of fights, magic and humour. You never know what’s around the next corner. LOTS. I just love AD’s books.
The third book in the series brings the heat! A duo worth reading. I enjoyed all of the action, thrills, and drama displayed throughout the pages of this book. A really great series so far and 'Of Flames and Crows' managed to keep up the vibe from the previous books and set this series on a path that will make for fun times. Can't wait for more!
This series has got me sucked in. Mae and her growing group of allies are again needed to stop the Dark Councils plans. I’m loving the characters, the humor and the building plot-without it becoming too overwhelming to keep track of people/places/relations between books. I cant wait to read book 4 and discover where all these pieces land in the end. Would recommend.
This series continues to enthrall me. The plot is interesting and complex and there are many interesting characters that support the main Hs, If you are considering reading this be advised to read the series in order and the underlying plot continues through all the books, it is not a standalone. My only complain, I have to wait until March 2023 for more of Mae, Nikolai and Vlad.
Mae is the BEST witch queen! She takes no crap from anyone and has a heart of gold to go with all that attitude. She also has a long stream of admirers that seems to be growing... Love this series and can't put it down. Full of action and the detail in which it's written is fantastic. I don't have enough positive things to say about this book! Keep up the good work A.D. Starrling!
Another wonderful installment in this series! Loved the new characters we met in this book - definitely made it interesting- especially for Vlad and Nikolai 🤣 And the new pet near the end is priceless! Already counting down the days until book 4 is out 🙂
My only criticism is that I wasn’t ready for it to end! Mae just keeps getting better and better! Nikolai & Vlad are constantly entertaining. Mae’s mom and grandma crack me up!! Great read!!
Great fun, four suitors? Haha! Since Mae went into the ley line can she do it on her own? One has three different powers and another just let his powers unleashed!
A .D Starrling has joined my list of favourite authors . Absolutely love this series and I am going to try more from this author. Already got the next book in the series
This part of the witch queen’s story has lots of action and some very emotional scenes. New faces join the team and the magic just gets stronger. After so much edge of the seat action, it was a release to end on a smile…ok, full on laughter. :)
The third installment of Witch Queen does not disappoint; I could not put the book down. The snarky humor is in abundance along with the nonstop action. I’m hoping to read more about the newest familiar in future installments.
Another fantastic book. Mae Jin and her friends are together once again, only this time they have to go against the Dark Council. Danger and intrigue. Loved every word.
