Eiichiro Oda (尾田栄一郎, Oda Eiichirō) is a Japanese manga artist, best known as the creator of the manga and anime One Piece.

As a child, Oda was inspired by Akira Toriyama's works and aspired to become a manga artist. He recalls that his interest in pirates was probably sparked by the popular TV animation series titled Vicky the Viking. He submitted a character named Pandaman for Yudetamago's classic wrestling manga Kinnikuman. Pandaman was not only used in a chapter of the manga but would later return as a recurring cameo character in Oda's own works.

Switching to volume-by-volume review now, as I’ve run out of omnibuses!
And this volume’s theme would arguably be…facing death and fighting to live (if not for yourself, for your friends) I guess?

At this point in the fight, Okiku is in real rough shape, having and Kin’emon isn’t doing much better. Usopp is trying to help them out of the burning palace, and they’re both doing the “no, just leave me!” noble sacrifice thing. And our beloved cowardly sniper snaps:
“What is it with you samurai and your death wishes!...I cling to life with snot running from my nose if I have to! I don’t care if it’s pathetic! I survive – it’s what I do!...Why are you idiots so satisfied with just pulling off your raid?!”
Showing up to back up that point is .

Chopper is worrying about Zoro, who basically took a performance enhancing drug to be able to fight King, but who is probably about to crash right now. And then we cut to Zoro, literally . But he’s made a lot of promises – to Kuina, to Luffy, and to Sanji – so will that be enough to pull him through?

And, meanwhile, Kaido (again) thinks he’s killed Luffy. And our rubber boy is NOT looking great, that’s true! Then one of the most interesting (and controversial-at-the-time) twists/reveals happens:

At the same time, we hear a telepathic conversation between Zuneshia, the giant elephant that carries the island of Zou on its back, and Momonosuke.

Gear5

Seeing Luffy’s awakened devil fruit in action is SO fun – and, I think, quite an appropriate progression! Yes, it is a little weird to have your hero be , especially given the bit about people of the D being . But actually we got the first foreshadowing of this all the way back in Skypeia: There has also been a ton of sun-imagery linked with Luffy throughout the series.

And this “super saiyan bugs bunny” form (as Mugiwara no Goofy memorably called it) is just right both for Luffy, whose strength has always been in his flexible nature and his capacity for joy and friendship – ESPECIALLY in contrast with Kaido, who doesn’t seem to think anything but prowess in battle worth considering and who, as a result, is miserable because he hasn’t had a serious challenge since Oden!
To see Luffy literally ? Hell yeah!

I also appreciate a 2022 interview, in which Oda cited the inspiration of goofy cartoons like Tom and Jerry said: “Battle mangas have to keep becoming more serious in order to meet the fans’ expectations. I’ve always hated that…I just want and decided to be playful, and I’m finally able to do that.” So this choice, in a way, represents freedom for the character and the artist at the same time!

The interactions between Yamato and Momonosuke in this volume are also great. With Luffy having swapped back in to fight Kaido, Yamato’s goals were, first, to make sure all the explosives down in the basement of the palace don’t blow up and, second, to help Momonosuke (in his dragon form) stop There’s a lot of pressure on Momo to master flame cloud production and manipulation real quick, and – though aged up by devil fruit magic to take on this large dragon form – he’s just a somewhat cowardly 8-year-old kid. So it is neat to see how Yamato helps him to not give up!

Well that is it, I am caught up to One Piece!! It's been a two year journey, but a LOT of fun.

I think Wano might be in contender for strongest arc in the series, I don't think its the best, Alabasta, Paramount War, and Dressrosa I think all are better. But, it was great!

So why the 3 stars? Well I didn't love the reveal for Luffy here, it felt a bit like plot armor intervening. I don't think it fit the more serious vibe that the series has been really maintaining.

Law, Kid, Zoro, and the samurai stole the show for me here.

Sigh.... now time to take a bit of a One Piece break, and let some chapters reaccumulate!

If we didn’t think that Luffy was a menace before, now with him being revealed as basically a reincarnation of joyboy who are the nika Sun god devil fruit, he gonna be 1000 times worse. I love it. This was so exciting. He is kicking ass and taking no names.

Kid and law were also stars of this volume. They kicked big mom’s ass. She better stay the fuck down fr

WANO COUNTRY ARC - PART 13
0. THIS ONE IS A FIVE OUT OF FIVE OUT OF FIVE OUT OF FIVE OUT OF FIVE

1. king smash, absolutely would pls

2. you know what's funny to me? it's been 20 years, and neither kaido or big mom are like ACTIVELY pursuing the one piece. they probably, with their fire power, could have wrought the red ponegliffs off other people's hands, or forged alliances to acquire it, but they didn't. i don't know if something was hindering them, that i don't know about yet, but in just a couple years of the straw hats on sea, and suddenly everybody wanna go after it again, or actually GOING in action about it

3. i actually quite like how kaido and king got together as friends and a crew; it puts it a little bit more into perspective - yes, we're on straw hat's side of this all, because in the end, kaido and his people have fucked up wano beyond belief, but king and zoro are both fighting for what they believe in. zoro for the promise he made luffy, and king for the belief and hope he's got in kaido. it's a different side of the same coin.

4. ZORO IS A DEMONNNNNNNNNNN; everything about that fight was perfection i am frothing at the mouth I CANNOTTTTT

5. i continuously find it funny how izo left the swords behind and adapted a gunner attitude (god, he is so hot) - ALSO IF YOU KILL HIM OFF, ODA, I WILL NOT FORGIVE YOU

6. why is law so into animal prints? ALSO HIS FUCKING PUNCTURE ATTACK??????????????? EUSTASS AND LAW DID SO FUCKING WELL, THAT ENDING WITH THE EXPLOSION GOING OFF IN THE SILENCE BUBBLE - corazon would be PROUD

7. all the fights before having been so intense and so mind-boggling cool, are only making me even more excited for luffy vs kaido: CIPHER PHOL?????? and once again, kaido is not going to like it if he wins because of the interference of somebody else; he hated it with the appearance of the hag against oden, and he hates it now. (not a chance that luffy doesn't win in the end)

8. THE DRUMS THE DURMS THE DRUMS THE DURMS RUDM RHEJ TUN THE DRUMS THE DRUMS THE DRUMS DRUMS OF LIBERATION ?????????????????????????? JOYBOY????????????????????????????????????????????????????? MY HEART IS RACING OH MY GOD GEAR FIVEE??? DUDE I CANNOT MY HEART IS THAT HIS POWER SNAPPING??? THE GUM GUM FRUIT IS A ZOAN???? GOD??????? i have goosebumps, i am shaking, i am tearing up HOLY FUCK ITS PLAYING WITH MY FEELINGS

This is the first One Piece volume in a while I unequivocally enjoyed and maybe even loved. Yes it still has some of the same problems I’ve been having with the other parts of Wano’s climax (cutting away too quickly from certain scenes, having some fights off screen, and introducing more storylines/characters). But this volume at least focused almost exclusively on the final fights with Kaido and Big Mom. It was a bit weird that a major villain like Big Mom was taken out not by Luffy or another Straw Hat. But because this extended story arc started with Luffy and Traffy forming an alliance to do so, it does work with Traffy being one of the characters to land final blows on her.
Kaido vs Luffy meanwhile had that epic quality to it that had been lacking in many other fights in Wano. Even if I’m not too keen on Luffy becoming yet another Chosen One and the reveal about the Gum Gum Fruit being another Zoan Fruit for the Sun God, Gear 5 is appropriately goofy and makes him feel like a very unique Shonen protagonist. I’ve heard the Drums of Liberation track from the anime before and did play the track while reading which does help sell the insanity of this next stage of the fight.

Beyond that there’s a few other parts of this volume that did work very well (Oden’s daughter getting revenge on Orochi, Nami’s faith in Luffy, Jinbe and the Ninja finally starting to bring the flames under control). So hopefully the final bits of Wano and the final part of the Kaido volume match this volume and the arc can end on a high note (I’m doubtful it’ll change my overall view on Wano but every bit helps).

I've been a fan of cartoons for a very long time. I watched Loony Tunes and Merrie Melodies when I was a child and The Mask starring Jim Carrey was a favorite of mine. Furthermore, I remember Yu-Gi-Oh and The Simpsons having episodes where the characters gain cartoony abilities.

What does all of this have to do with One Piece, though? Devil Fruits have been a mysterious phenomenon in One Piece since the first chapter, Romance Dawn. Oda constantly doled out information on this plot point carefully. Shanks' crew got the Gum-Gum Fruit from an enemy ship. Luffy happened to eat it by accident. I recall Oda discussing the different types of Devil Fruit in one of the Question Corners, but I don't remember which one off the top of my head. There are three types; Paramythia, Zoan, and Logia.

We learn that Devil Fruits have higher stages called an awakening. Of course, Luffy needs to gain this power to get strong enough to face newer foes. What will it be like? Will he get some kind of resin power or vulcanization or something along those lines? No. Oda throws a curveball and makes Luffy's awakening a toon-force version of himself. We even get a lore drop from the Five Elders, where the World Government pursued the Gum-Gum Fruit for the last 800 years.

I cannot wait for the next volume, even though I know a bit of what happens already. Thanks for reading my review, and see you next time.

Gear Five, incredible. Was laughing at every Luffy moment—that’s something that kinda fell away as the series got more and more serious and covered larger scale battles, bigger moments, and more heartbreak (was still awesome, but missed the fun that came with it all). Love that all Luffy’s future battles, big or small, can be goofy as all hell again now.
