La passation de Jean Van Hamme à Eric Giacometti est plutôt réussie. Le passé de journaliste d'investigation du nouveau scénariste ancre le personnage de notre scénariste belge octogénaire et désormais retraité dans l'actualité pour ce nouvel album, première partie d'une aventure dont je ne connais pas encore le nombre d'opus.
"Notre" Largo est toujours à la tête de l'entreprise dont il a hérité mais dont l'image vieillissante face aux "start-ups" où l'on peut reconnaître un équivalent de SpaceX. Le (toujours) jeune milliardaire se démène pour changer la donne face à l'enjeu écologique et de responsabilité sociale de son entreprise en réorganisant son groupe et en tentant de nouvelles acquisitions, en particulier une entreprise française, et même varoise, œuvrant dans le spatial. Riche idée quand on son nouveau conseiller à l'innovation annonce le chiffre d'affaire prévu par le secteur en 2030. Mais c'est sans compter avec la concurrence de ses rivaux et surtout sur quelqu'un qui semble prêt à manipuler la presse, employer des tueurs à gage dont l'un est rodé à la manipulation, à la guerre électronique, au brouillage, au meurtre, efficace quoique nostalgique et à la limite de l'indolence pour son départ à la retraite. Bref, un ennemi se terre, prêt à tout pour nuire à Largo.
Un seul regret: le passé de journaliste d'investigation d'Eric Giacometti au Parisien aurait pu nous distiller quelques connaissances techniques, économiques quand on sait que celui-ci est adossé au journal Echos qui fait référence dans le domaine. Mais cela reste un album dans la ligné de son créateur. Le dessin demeure impeccable.

Dit is het derde album geschreven door Éric Giacometti die hiermee nog eens bevestigt hoe hij de perfecte opvolger van Van Hamme is.
De Largo-albums spelen de laatste tweeluiken nog meer in op de actualiteit. Deze keer liet Giacometti zich inspireren door het clubje miljardairs die enkele jaren geleden elk hun versie van ruimtevaart-toerisme voor de allerrijksten introduceerden. Dan is er ook oog voor de uitbuiting en kinderarbeid in ongezonde omstandigheden ten behoeve van de productie van de nieuwste technologieën en de hiervoor nodige batterijen. (Het figureren van een ergerlijk stereotyp beeld van de #metoo-beweging wil ik het auteursduo nog vergeven.) Een mens zou beginnen vermoeden dat Largo in albums 25 & 26 de strijd met misgelopen of misbruikte artificiële intelligentie zal moeten aangaan.
De reeks blijft garant staan voor een uurtje toffe striplectuur vol actie en intriges, telkens prachtig in beeld gebracht door Philippe Francq.

Vermakelijk om te lezen, zeker als je door de stereotypen heen kunt kijken. Die zitten er helaas wel veel in. Vrouwen lijken sowieso maar voor een paar dingen goed te zijn en hun denkkwaliteiten zijn dat niet. Verhaal zat wel beter in elkaar dan het vorige deel en was wat beter te volgen. Ben toch benieuwd naar het volgende.
Vermakelijk om te lezen, zeker als je door de stereotypen heen kunt kijken. Die zitten er helaas wel veel in. Un peu de finance , des tueurs professionnels, de la remise en question de l'économie mondiale, Simon toujours aussi fanfaron, c'est du bon Largo comme on l'aime. On espère juste que Dwight Cochrane changera d'avis dans la suite du diptyque !

Assez drôle de voir la tentative d'actualisation de cette BD. Concilier Largo winch, écologie et metoo, une tentative intéressante... On n'y est pas encore.

Giacometti continues to prove that he has the writing chops to follow on from Van Hamme with another solid tale of business intrigue, dirty tricks and high stakes. The world around us has changed a lot since Van Hamme and Francq put out the first Largo Winch book, and so this story aims to bring the narrative bang up to date. The W Group's diverse holdings and ventures, up until now, have been very traditional, and so far there's been little acknowledgment of emerging tech and the future of industry. That all changes here.
When we first meet Largo he's visiting a tin mine in Indonesia where he's a major shareholder. Wanting to get a good look at the real operation, he disguises himself, posing as a buyer, and finds exploitation of the locals on a grand scale. We're reminded, instantly, that Largo is not your average business owner as he puts the house in order.
But there are other players on show: The Munskinds. A husband and wife team personifying perfection, success and the embracing of new technologies. Jarod Munskind shrugs off any effort that compares him to Largo Winch, dismissing his fellow business giant. But they're after the same prize, and that means their paths are going to cross.
The conclusion, or cliffhanger to put it more accurately, is an intriguing one. Not quite sure how they'll address this, but I'd be surprised if they're bumping Largo off...
But let's have a quick chat about Francq's choice of inspiration for the look of some of the characters. Jarod Munskind is undoubtedly Tom Hiddleston, while his wife is clearly Angelina Jolie (and Waldo looks like a young Frank Sinatra). Using famous people's likenesses has certainly been a thing for a while. Bryan Hitch drawing Nick Fury like Samuel L Jackson and Simon Pegg turning up Wee Hughie in The Boys are two prime examples, and Uderzo was quite happy to use a likeness throughout his run on Asterix. Here, though, I did feel it was a bit of a jolt that took me out of the story for a few pages. Fortunately, it is a minor distraction, not a great one, and the story carries the day.
Once again, another great Largo Winch book. If you've not discovered these yet, then you're missing out.
