Lightning brought her back. Now, it's her best weapon to survive the apocalypse...
When the end of the world arrived, Elysia was already dead. Amid widespread destruction, collapsing cities, and dangerous creatures, strange lightning struck her grave.
Rejuvenated by the violent shock, life returns to her broken body. Elysia must find a way to harness the element in her veins or die as she's thrust into a dangerous new world.
Better than being dead.
She was always a free spirit, and survival is just another challenge. But as she powers up, something constantly nags at her... That maybe, just maybe, her family is still alive somewhere out there.
Don’t miss the start of this new action-packed LitRPG Apocalypse series about a reincarnated loner turned lightning-thrower. She'll carve out a place for herself in a world changed by a System, conquering zombies, dungeon bosses, and worse, all while fast-traveling on a yacht.
The stats are pointless, they are used often but are never given context so you don't realize they have no effect. The combat is terrible, just terrible. The situation has several holes that are never addressed. The MC has nothing that pulls you in. She bounces around in a panic with no direction for the entire book. She is unremarkable as a character.
This…this is not good. The MC makes inexplicable decisions, seems to possess knowledge and abilities not supported in the text, and is dragged around by the plot like a crash-test dummy.
‘Whittle’, not “widdle”…that’s not even a word. Maybe don’t *tear off and throw away* clothes because they are “stained”; this is (at least to that point) a zombie apocalypse with a tidal wave and destroyed stores. Oh, and leaving garbage in dumpsters…after a tidal wave…but heaven forbid you toss *anything* into the ocean…that seems to have plenty of wrecked boats a debris…
I stopped to write this when the MC got news her ‘kind’ were required to report to a camp and she didn’t want to go *because it would include forced training*…because that is immediately what I think of in terms of ‘camps’ and a government dividing its citizens - “training”.
I’m gonna try to keep going, but this makes my brain hurt.
This took a looong time to get moving, and when it finally did, a lot of it didn't really come together.
First off, Vancouver Island is in CANADA and we don't answer to the US President, especially post apocalypse when US military power ceases to exist. If the new Yank President told us to extradite our citizens for his use, he'd get told where he could shove that. I know we have a reputation as some sort of socialist "sorry" land, but that's not the part of Canada which would survive an apocalypse. You can tell that this annoyed me.
In terms of the story itself, the MC made a lot of irrational decisions which is frustrating. She had no business surviving (again) in the early stages which impeded my suspension of belief when she did in fact muddle through repeatedly. Not sure I can be bothered with book 2, but that's not 100%. If it's a slow week, maybe...
The blurb seemed promising so I gave it a shot. But honestly it lacks anything interesting. It was DNF after less than an hour I tried to skip past entire chapters and found that nothing really changed. The writing style was very mundane and lacked any feeling to it. I will be returning this book. The MC character is a typical nobody but instead of wondering what's going on and how she came back to life she ignores everything. Overly descriptive of every action she takes in an effort to fill the book with as much fluff as possible to extend the word count.
I gave this 4 stars on the simple basis that it is better than 90% of the same kind of books out there, and that point being momentum, never at any point in the book does the mc goes in super deep contemplating mode for wether the mc should eat the food in front of them or not, and wether or not to chew with open mouth or to use cutlery , cause they are feeling hungry but need to maintain etiquette, especially when they are strapped for time. I am sure you are as confused by that last line as I want you to feel, now sure, i know that the above description is a grossly exaggerated example of that kind of thing, but it's true since most of those mc go on tangents about so much useless stuff inside their head that it pads a 4 hour book into a 20 hour book , most of these book have a socially crippled mc that is so afraid to speak in front of another person that it makes you wonder how they even breath without having a mental breakdown, and speaking of mental breakdown, they have one every time they do something out of their comfort zone. Oh and did I mention that those social anxiety issues are portrayed as a highlight for the mc with looking at a girl without leaking being considered a noble prise worthy moment.
Now all that aside, this book is not that good other than the setting, which while interesting , is mostly used as a backdrop for the catalog of a girl stumbling around in the dark like a ew born kitten. The writer is very amature in terms of litrpg books, and it takes around 60% of the book to go into mc mode and even then it's mostly just for a few moments, and as far as story, yeah, have you read a book where you want some mystery and you get some mystery, but then it hold on to that mystery for so fucking long, that it becomes the single strongest downfall of the book, like a girl reviving from the dead and then not looking at a single newspaper to see how fucking long it has been, it's takes almost the last of the book to get barely any clarity with contextual clues that are thrown in you face to make the writer look like a smart person, and the system is utterly useless and frankly very disappointing. But dont worry the mc is super underpowered and had plot Armor thicker that an action hero in an action movie with bullets flying towards him from every side and yet he survives....because. The reason I called the writer amature, because the writer missed the point of the mc being overpowered in litrpg as a counter to plot Armor and convinces and most importantly, so that the mc can be thrown in absurd situations and yet come out victorious with ridiculous amount of action and fun. But the mc in this one is also quite dull i would say, she barely does anything other that to survive and even after realising that she needs to grow stronger she is not in the mc mindset and mostly coasts by with plot Armor.
Now all that said I would not recommend buying the second book and also not leaving the first book in the middle, but if you don't like it at the start, like around 3 hours in, then drop it, since it never goes into some overdrive mode after that and mostly just roll at a nice place with not much in terms of action, but if building a boat and cleaning it is your jam that get this book.
So many problems. But the biggest one is how mind-bogglingly stupid the main character is. It got to the point that I became certain that the author was trolling me. Just intentionally making the MC pick the worst option in every scenario. Especially, complaining about needing to get stronger, while leaving all of her attribute points unspent!
Also, the writing was just bad in general. About a third of the way through the book, I think the author spent more time describing, in detail, the steps she needed to take to clean her boat than any kind of exploration of her new reality or attempting to learn anything about the system. This character spends more energy and is more horrified by bad smells than any of her near-death experiences.
She spends almost half of the book naked or nearly naked. Why?! Her clothes got dirty, so she threw them away. Her clothes smell bad? Throw them away. Her clothes don’t smell bad? User her electric powers in a weird way and they all burn away.
I wanted to give this book 2 stars, but I like the overall idea of the story and I will grudgingly admit to barely wanting to know what happens next enough to probably pick up the next book… eventually. Maybe after I’ve read something really good and built up my tolerance for this level of writing. My Goodreads notes on this book are plentiful, though I’ll need to mark several as spoilers, which I hate to do.
*Audiobook Review* I could not even finish half way. The main character is a perfect example of simpleton. What is worse; it also portrays a female protagonist in a such a poor light. This is coming from a guy. The MC has poor survival skills and I mean before the apocalypse. The fact she died like Ned Flanders from a Simpson's Halloween special; was example of Darwin at work. Even after finding out that she died and zombies are around, he walks around town as if nothing happened. She is afraid of looting because she is worried that she will be arrested for theft...during an apocalypse. She goes home and thinks her family will accept her immediately. She goes like two days without choosing a class because she thinks the system is all in her head...but being dead and zombies walking around is beliveable? She can't figure out that she is pretty much running on electrical energy, even when the system shows that she needs electrical charge and has an electrical affinity. She electrocutes herself TWICE; by the same faulty electrute outlet. I just couldn't...go on. Bad vocabulary and grammar is one thing...but this was written by a thirteen year old boy. NOPE.
I’ve only found the first three parts of this book a slog. First of all the FMC what’s the deal with her. She’s always falling down, cracking her head on something or running around half naked, does the author have something he wants to tell us about naked teenage 18-year-old girls? The magic system is not explained until the book is almost over and still the explanation is not good enough or fulfilling. I am giving this three stars because of the action sequences they were very well done, there are some exciting scenes, but the FMC running around half naked or naked, is kind of creepy, especially with her being so young. and if she is supposed to be competent in the skills she has, why then does she make stupid decisions? Even the snarky and silly system in the book mentions that she makes stupid decisions. I want to like this character because of the action sequences and I think the book has potential, but lose the teenage nudity and give you a main character more wits.
Ask some other reviews have pointed out 1st few chapters were a bit bumpy. But be patient A good book awaits. New system apocalypse series. Century no and MC who is brought back to life by lightning. Basically most of the book is her mumbling about learning the system without any tutorial or instruction. Seems that most of humanity got such a deal she did not as she was awaken slightly later. But she is tough and perseveres. She is with the local term a "changed". Everybody seems to have the system but the changed seem to have some elemental powers. Basically magic. And that's not good as you were forcefully conscripted. So our heroine is on the run at the same time she learns about powers, dungeons, the system and skills.... basically everything. Was an awesome read. Look forward to the next book And I am hoping it is just as good as this one.
Mistakes that I have found will be listed on Goodreads.
I almost gave this three stars because the MC is a bit of a moron. First she steps in front of a truck because she can't be bothered to pay attention to her surroundings. Her supply gathering was not thought out or done very well. There are a couple more times that she just doesn't think or plan or just does something stupidly silly. Like sunbathing instead of reading the manuals for her boat.
The MC started off as a dead idiot. While it takes a while she does improve some. The leveling is super fast. I mean super fast. Still it becomes a decent story and I look forward to book two.
7/10 The MC will probably run into plenty of problems in the future from a lack of planning or even thinking things through. She just isn't very bright.
This is a great start to what I can only think will be an awesome series.
The world building & systems are intricate and different enough to be interesting while still familiar, and the implication of more to learn later in the book/in future instalments has maintained by curiosity throughout.
The characters are good, most focus is on the MC with no real POV changes for the most part. Elysia (MC) is realistic as someone who wakes up in a sort of post-apocalyptic world and the hints at her future power are already enticing for those who enjoy an OP lead. The cast of supporting characters are mostly introduced in the second half but we already get a sense of how they will fit into the larger story. I’m looking forward to getting to know them better in future books.
Overall I really enjoyed it and am looking forward to book 2, highly recommend.
This book really needs an Editor. It needs a copy-editor, and preferably a psychologist to give some much-needed realism to the character's behaviour. In an Apocalypse situation, when you've just come back from the dead and there are literal zombies roaming around, who the hell grabs a single change of clothes? Why would you take weapons once, then ignore chances for more?
Apart from these stupid character choices, the world-building is interesting, although the persistent snark from a supposedly hands-off System is jarring, as it implies a closer connection to the MC than is shown elsewhere.
Basically, the book is full of good ideas, poor writing, and badly plotted scenes. It's fun to read regardless, but only in that "WTF are you doing you moron? Now what?" way.
This doesn't make the sanity check. Dislikable MC repeatedly making incomprehensible decisions, compounded by surrounding plot-doll characters acting like chatbots.
What ultimatively drowns everything is how anyone could spend days without asking the most important questions regarding what is going on when they have the chance. And why is that? Because the author is desperatedly trying to leave some questions and mysteries so the reader keeps reading. The problem is that there are no questions and no story beyond the apocalypse and the MC being thrown from one situation into another (okay, one time she is literally kicked into a situation).
Ultimatively, it all comes off as forced and lazy and to my horror I must say: There are some harem-sex stories out there which have better plot!
This story needs a total rewrite, an editor, and a proofreader.
This book has a great story, the world building is great, the MC has a decent story, the others characters not so much. I have some serious issues with parts of this book, for instance the amount of time the MC is naked, or being completely ignorant to her own needs and basic survival. The system is “quirky” honestly it would be better if the system was just a system and not trying to be funny or quirky. However the book did keep me reading until the end, I’m debating if I want to read book 2, as the story is pretty amazing, but I really start to cringe at the amount of unnecessary nudity, that is completely unrealistic, (I will choose to be sweaty and smelly over naked 100% of the time). Not to mention the lack of basic survival ideals.
A pretty fun LitRPG as long as you A: don't expect a real progression system other than "Ding, Ding, Ding" when fighting as an underleveled and underprepared electricity user, and B: don't expect anything more than a fairly decent post-apocalypse wish-fulfillment power-user type novel that puts the reigns in the hands of the "altered" over especially the military types that just don't get the skill-ups they so desperately desire.
All told, despite the logic errors and the sloppy RPG elements, I didn't mind it so much. It was a popcorn read and it was pretty great just zapping everything with lightning and slashing with spears and knives.
If you leave your brain at home, you might just have a great time. And honestly, I guess I did, too.
I expected this to have a death variant heroine. The beginning of the book does have zombies, but the fmc is actually brought back alive. The system is snarky, the fmc is a loner on a path to being a major powerhouse, and she ends the story with allies, friends, and potential allies. I'm very concerned about the flashback of other's experiencing the integration. Green villain is setting up a nasty villain arc. I am excited to see where these adventures go next.
The book starts in a slow, muddled fashion. Some type of apocalypse occurred, leaving our MC on her own. Later, we get drips and drops of info... but much is still unexplained. The MC initially comes across as the stereotypical teenage girl, focused on chocolate and clothes, but gains power through her actions, willpower (and a bit of plot armor). The pacing picks up in the second half as she slowly gets a handle on both her strengths and events in the world around her.
The book was good not amazing what one could expect from a first installment of a litrpg series, could have used a bit more of World Building or elaborate the system elements more as teased at the end of the book.
Could have done with little less of specifying her eye colour every time they are mentioned we get it she is similar to a Targaryen, ten times would've been enough to get it in the reader's head, we pay attention when we read there's no need to specify it every single time, the only annoying quirk through out the book.
On one hand TBE author has done an amazing job of keeping the audience just as confused and in the dark as the protagonist. However, on the other hand it is annoying to know a LIT based progression novel is not sharing any information is annoying.
Because of the lack of information the book is a bit on the boring side in the beginning as our protagonist is by herself for most of the book with no clue what is happening.
The end portion of the book is nonstop interaction with humans.
The premise of the book was good but the execution not so much. I can't believe the main character never looked for her family. She even went to her house and thought about her family more than once but never went out of her way to find anyone from her town, that just not realistic. Although it's not a horrible book I don't think the author took enough time to think the scenario.
MC dies and is reborn in her own world soon after an apocalypse and has a system. She encounters only the undead for a long time and runs around killing zombies, gathering supplies, and weapons. She’s good with engines and the like and readies a lot of vehicles to escape the island and find her family. And it’s all just really humorless and bland. I tried to like it, but was just bored to death.
The tale itself was entertaining, but lacked any plot at all, and essentially nothing of substance was ever explained. The MC starts alone and clueless yet every time she gets the opportunity to get info/answers she either doesn't do so or is shut down for absolutely no reason. Overall fun, but frustrating and soulless in retrospect.
I enjoyed the book and it was an interesting take on a system takes over novel. The MC is likeable but makes random choices at times that make no sense. The magic system was not explained very well either which made parts of the book confusing. Good enough to read the next book though.
One moment, she's a high-school kid, the next she has a solid understanding of how to do anything. No emotion after the first couple of chapters. DNF. Edit: No idea why the author tagged this as "cyberpunk" or "epic". It is straight zombie, system apocalypse. The most advance tech in the book is an electric bike. The story is day-to-day minutia of the MC's life. Nothing epic going on.
Girlie be making some decisions that I just do not understand, also ends up naked like... all the time? I personally like more of a hard, crunchy lit rpg, and this is way on the soft side. A good story, a very interesting world, and enough mystery to keep me going. I am hoping the second book delves more into detail.
I honestly want sure what to expect with this book. It is somewhat a typical litrpg novel, but that's not a bad thing. I quite enjoyed this, and think that most people into litrpg will as well.
this book was not good. it did have every stupid litrpg trope including mastering the spear, a pointlessly snarky system, an unbelievably stupid MC, and a slave arc though, so that was nice. If you are playing LitRPG bingo this is the book for you.
Needs a lot of work given 60-70% of the book is repetitive survival filler with something like litrpg elements that are barely worth mentioning. Also creepy af old man vibes. If food, it’s a gas station I’m backing out of.
Very creative and original.. Enjoyed it greatly.... Keep it up and I'll keep reading... And if you ever want to be on my Facebook talkshow.. Find me on Facebook... Highly recommend JD Glasscock Author of the Series Blood Brothers and The Dream
