Maria was thirteen, pregnant, and forced into prostitution by her drug-addicted mother, Sofia.
Longing for a relationship with her mother, Maria did everything she could to make Sofia see that she was worthy of her love, even things she vowed never to do. But when her younger sister, Selena, comes to live with them, she begins to fall into the same trap of performative love.
In this heart-wrenching story loosely based on real-life events, you will be taken on a rollercoaster ride with this mother and daughters trio, turning their American dream into a nightmare.
It was a decent story, but it wasn't well written or edited. There were so many mistakes that it was often hard to follow the author's train of thought. Hopefully, this author will continue to write and will find a better editor.
`I DID like this book. It was just always something going on which at the same time made this book very interesting. ABUELA was one of my favorite characters when I first started reading this book if it wasn't for her them kids would have had it even worse then that already did. Later on in the book some things came to the light that had me questioning her true intentions. SOFIA was literally the worst character in the book in my main opinion she did everything but be a damn mother. She literally had her teenage daughters out there selling themselves. She took their innocence without them having any say so in it. SELENA she kind of aggravated me especially with the way she treated maria when it all came down to it. towards the end of the book she started blaming her mother for the way she turned out and the way things were going. she did end up getting herself together towards the end of the book but it took ALOT of work and alot of mistakes. MARIA even tho what happened to her was indeed so tragic she was most definitely one of my favorite characters out of the whole book. The way that she completely turned her life around and overcame obstacles that alot of people wouldnt be able to deal with. I love it so much. Her past ended up catching up with her when it was all said and done and what happened to her she definitely didnt deserve it. EVEN with what was happening with maria towards the end of the book she didnt manage to blame anyone but herself for her mistakes, and its definitely sad with what happened to her. ANNA i really liked her persona she reminded me alot of myself. when she started finding out the truth about her best friend maria she didnt know how to deal with it so she backed away a little bit. All in all she didnt really judge maria for what she had going on and how she made a living she just wanted her to be safe and find something better as time progressed on. Anna was always there for maria when something was wrong or something serious was going on, she was such a great friend. The things these girls had to go through in life definitely made me appreciate my parents and the good life i have. I did look into more books by this specific author but this was the only book I managed to see. I would recommend this book to people. SO if you haven't read it.. go out there and get it. ITS a good read !
This book has been on my TBR list for so long and finally decided to read it!!!…I was not expecting what I read, but this roller coaster ride filled with many emotions, anger being the main one!!!… The excuses and reasons behind a mother’s treatment of her children and the trauma inflicted on them!!!… I laughed when Maria laughed, I was confused when she was confused, angry when she was and prayed for a better outcome for her!!!… I love the fight she had in her to protect her son Ana finally her peace!!!…I cried at her ending because I wanted to see the mother she would become as her son got older!!!… I was happy Salena finally had a reason to get clean and stay clean!!!… Sophia, that’s all I’m going to say because she was definitely damaged and nothing was going to change her mindset!!!…
This book was sad, but had special meaning to it. To me it shows what can happen if you run around in the streets doing things like was going on in this book. Another a mother that did what this one did is not a mother anyone can be a mom but it take a hellable woman to be a mother you suppose to love , care and nourish your kids not what she did and she had no remorse for it just much. I'm glad the brother is going to finish raising the son good thing. Now I'm not going to say anymore cause I will be done told the story. It's an awesome book. Lata
This was a great sad tale of some very true life situations that kept me riveted on what would happen next. Unfirtunately, these type situations really do ocvur. Cycles start unbeknownst to a lot of people and many become uncouth in their daily lives. Hurt people, hurt people to get their own satisfaction even though they know what their doing. I feel like the grandmother could've done a much better job with the grandchildren seeing how she failed her only child when confronted with her woes. Thankfully the ending brought closure to many a soul.
This story made me mad, sad, surprised me, made me cry,shout,smile,laugh...... And also realize how BLESSED i really am!! There have been women and men who go through this situation!!! So much to say about this book. but imma jus say,READ IT FOR YOUR SELF!!💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
OMG, I was reading this book at work and I know stuff like this happens in real life. I cried and was very emotional. This was my first time reading from this author She did a damn good job. Looking forward to reading more.
I went through so many emotions reading this.. I can’t imagine living this way.. Then I realize I was close to it at one time.. that’s a story for another time..
This was litterly a terrible story about a mother who pumps her two young daughters out to pay for her alcohol, drugs, rent, food everything. It was hard to read, but it was an interesting book.
I was expecting a wild ride but I was not expecting THIS!!!! My heart broke for these children I know it’s a book but my heart wanted to save these children LIFE failed these ladies whewww! You really showed us that life can be so cruel
Excellent story..If I didn't work nights I would've been done with this book 🙃. This story hit like a brick in all sincerity. It's just sad to know that somewhere in the world this is actually someone's true story..
One of them books...don't judge a book by its cover. No it's not written in the best way. But OMG it has the most heartbreaking storyline! I will never ever judge a prostitute again! My heart has officially broken!!!!! If you have KU download it!!!!! Read the book!!!!! 😭 ❤️
Extremely hard read. Author did a good job telling g a story, which is why I gave 5 stars. This book a reader may need to take several breaks to process in the moment. Hug your daughters tight after.
I selected this book based on title and cover. I had to put it down a few time since it was a lot to ingest. I also read a lot reading this book based on the situation they were in. I look forward to finding other books by this authors well.?
This was based off trust events and some parts were hard to read. The story had rape, prostitution and drugs. There were some grammatical errors but the characters were believable
This book had so many typos… Lol!! It was a traumatic book with lots of drama… Violence, seggual violence! I understand by the title that it was going to have some drama and things… but… yeah… It was predictable.
This is one of my favorite books I've ever read!! I've had a similar life, I'm so proud of Maria for overcoming everything and looking at life the way she did!! What a great book!! MUST READ!!
The plot is quite captivating once you get used to the unique way the author phrases her sentences. I enjoyed the story as Maria, the protagonist is very easy to relate to and to root for.
Very I interesting and sad read. Not expecting how the mother treated her daughter and expected her support them both at a young age. It kept you turning pages wanting to find out what happens next to the daughter, hoping things get better.
