The editing is still not very good in this book, similar to book #1 where there are many misplaced commas and some words are wrongly spelt. Line breaks are in the wrong place, which makes it confusing to determine who is speaking at times. Nevertheless, the story is good, which is why I'm giving the book four stars. But it is frustrating and I hope the author will get a better editor for future books.
So the book continues immediately where book #1 left off. In fact, there's a bit of overlap, as we go over the same scene from Lyric's POV (in book #1 it was from Callan's POV). I liked that Lyric didn't forgive Saint / Ryder immediately and take him back. She has to work through her feelings, which is exactly what it would be like IRL. She admits that she still loves him but says she was hurt.
The whole situation is tricky because the guys are afraid that with Saint back in her life, she wouldn't want them. Saint is afraid that with alphas in her life, she wouldn't need a beta, who can't help her during her heat because he doesn't have an alpha knot. There are things to work through and I thought this part was very masterfully done. Each of the guys has to make his own peace with his inner fears and insecurities, and choose to accept Saint / Ryder into their pack. Meanwhile, Lyric does a lot of communicating and is upfront with each of the guys about how she feels. I REALLY love the communication and personal growth that happens among all the characters, and if not for the editing issues, I would have given this book 5 stars for this alone.
I thought that Storm felt like an afterthought or last-minute addition to the harem. We never really got to know him and he didn't feel like part of the group. Saint / Ryder on the other hand, fit in quite seamlessly. I loved how he helped the other guys to care for Lyric and coached them on what an omega needs. It's clear that he had done a lot of research throughout the years to find out the best way to help her. He loves her desperately and that's something I love to see in every romance book hero.
I feel that the author gave us a good balance of time spent with all the guys, although I almost feel like Lyric favours Griffin a bit more than the others. We still don't get to meet Michael (Griffin's uncle and the owner of the security firm who protects Lyric). I felt cheated as a result -- if someone is mentioned so much and is so important, he ought to appear in the book at some point. And then there was Lyric's mother... I wasn't sure what all the drama with her was all about--like what did she hope to achieve with all that?
Finally we get some answers about Marcus Gaffney, Lyric's brother. And Lyric eventually decides to quit coke but I was frustrated that we don't find out how or why. Saint / Ryder seems to imply that it's normal for her to "indulge" when she's in a creative frenzy, writing songs. When one of the guys is concerned and asks him about it, he says it's not something to be worried about, as he has seen her like this before and she's being productive. Yet after that, she decides to quit coke but it's just mentioned in one throw-away line. In book #1, I had thought that she was close to becoming an addict as she would very casually snort coke or crystal quite often, so to me this was a big deal and I wanted to know why she had made the decision to quit.
All in all, I felt that this book was stronger than book #1 and I think the author's writing is amazing. It really just needs a wee bit more touch-up from a good copy editor to help it shine the way it is meant to shine.
