couldn’t finish

This series has really fallen off a cliff. No plot or character development. Tons of inane conversation. I really hate to abandon this series but I can’t read another book like this.

This series has some really good points, and strong negatives as well. I like the premise, some of the interactions, and many of the characters. The story itself is pretty good as well, with an interesting array of characters, battles, and interactions.

The negatives are dragging the series down for me. Casual swearing, weird sexual tangents that are awkward, and a lack of progressing the story line in a meaningful way are my top three. I've quit reading the series a couple times I think, mostly due to my reviews being deleted off amazon, and being unable to remember if I wanted to read the next book or not. Partially because I like many aspects of the story, and partially because I occasionally run out of things to read and so I start reading things that are not my favorite just to have something to read.

Fun

Yay! More Mayor of Noobtown madness. Jim travels to gather what he needs to defeat the Dark Overlord. He powns the whole Elven society then gets them onboard with his war. He then jets off to the Capital to fight the Boss of the criminal underworld. He loses, but kind of wins. And he learns there might be a way to save Jara.
Still a hilarious and fast paced tale brimming in pop culture references and fourth wall breaks. Well told and an excellent installment in the series. Please enjoy

Love this series

Rimmel, you are hysterical! We clearly are into similar things as I love that I pick up every reference you make! Thanks for a wonderful story with lots of twists and turns and believable fantasy situations. No part of your books is ever cookie-cutter unless it's a spoof, then you still twist it around. Lots of laughter in this one, excited for more of your work, at your leisure, Mr. Rimmel!

I love a book that can make you laugh out loud.

Jim’s adventures continue to grow more complex and hilarious. The author uses many of the side characters to more affect, which is a real pleasure. The dialogue between the three main characters, Jim,Shart and Badgelor is as fun and witty as ever. I can’t wait for the next book.

Disappointing

Just..... What the hell was that????
The previous books were....lets say good but this one was absolute chaos.
The only reason I'm giving 2 stars is
because of the previous books.

This was not my series favorite. I really didn't like Jim's visit to the lookout, and I found the eventual battle in Filly disjointed. I am frustrated that none of the "bad guys" stay dead. I plan to finish the series. However, I understand that the author has needed to focus on a serious health scare in his wife, and no release date is yet posted.

The Noobtown series might be marginally more tolerable in its audiobook form due to a skilled narrator masking its many flaws, suffers from fundamental issues in its written form. Glaring spelling and punctuation errors are rampant.

A significant concern lies in the writing style, which can be best described as shallow and juvenile. The author's approach seems to revolve around cramming as many memes and catchphrases into the text as possible. This inundation of pop culture references feels forced and often out of place, failing to add any real humor or depth to the story. It comes across as an attempt to stay relevant or engaging, but it achieves neither.

The character development, or the lack thereof, is another critical shortcoming. Characters who once might have had the potential for depth and growth have been reduced to mere caricatures of their former selves. Their interactions and progressions feel superficial, stripping away any charm or relatability they might have once possessed. This lack of depth extends to the world-building aspect as well. The series initially promised an intriguing exploration of city-building and management within a fantasy context. However, this aspect has been almost entirely abandoned.

TLDR: Sometimes, the jokes are funny, and some of the combat scenes are nice to read. However, the author will then repeat the same joke a dozen more times, seemingly randomly. Every good thing about this book is marred by being over done or becoming a running gag.

I go back and forth while reading this one. Sometimes the jokes get really old and just aren't funny and then all of sudden they are funny again. I just can't figure it out. This one was nonstop questing to find the crown so that Jim can be recognized as the mayor of Windfall. The rest of the group had their own mission which brought them into the path of the dark overlord. This one was missing something for me. I think it was the interactions with the characters. There was some fun missing in this one. It was a little too serious despite being completely ridiculous. The same problem I have with other books of this type I had with this one. What would it take to make Jim happy? He is doing all this for revenge which I have no problem with, but what else is there? If that is all he has planned, then what is the point? There needs to be a little bit of balance. Something that will make him happy and that is missing. Overall, it was still good. Sometimes it was funny and sometimes it was annoying. Sometimes it was a quick read and other times it dragged on. It seems like it is getting close to the end, so I am looking for a good finish.

Overall, a very enjoyable read. There's a clear reason why Amazon decided to categorise the release as 'humourous fiction', rather than anything else. If anything, I missed the secondary characters that go along with Jim, as in this book, they all go their (mostly) separate ways. Also, less city management than was present in the very first books, and a bit less of the MC 'Jimming it up'. It did happen, of course, we weren't be deprived fully of that pleasure.

This book makes it very clear that the final showdown will happen in the near future. I'm excited for what that will entail. Probably won't end too well for the two Control Room demons. We shall find out

Excited for the next

I do love the Noobtown series only the problem was that it was starting to feel like the author was not planning on completing the story arc. Now a lot of things are getting set for the end and I enjoy the battles the book had as well as the humor. Eager for more and my thanks to Ryan Rimmel for this series.

Laugh out loud funny series. Another great addition to this fantastic line of books. I can't wait for some more of the authors work no matter what it is. I'm excited about the future books and crabby was excellent

I just discovered the Noobtown series a few months ago, so this is the first book that I've gotten to that didn't have an audiobook version. I didn't want to wait, so I grabbed the Kindle version. Yikes, I wish I'd waited.

Since this is my first print version, I'm not sure if the rest are like this, but the writing is just awful. Not in the sense of storytelling, but in terms of typos, wrong words, missing words, random misplaced punctuation and spaces, etc. It was like reading a talented story teller's 3rd grade English assignment.

Beyond that, I feel that Noobtown is falling prey to Xanth syndrome. By that I mean the author is now so focused on his running gags and references that the actual story and characters have become secondary. From Shart's sudden and unprecedented obsession with calling himself "the big dog" and literally WOOFing at things to Sir Dalton being reduced to barely more than a person who talks to his body parts many of the characters just didn't feel as organic as they did before. Everything has become a cliche and a gimmick. I also got incredibly bored with the constant fake deaths and cloning.

I saw someone else mention that the author was dealing with some personal stuff while writing, so I'm hoping that the time between book and audiobook publishing will involve him having some time to do some serious editing, otherwise the narrator is going to be reading some really weird (ok, even weirder than normal) lines.

Tower of the Noobs (Noobtown, #7) by Ryan Rimmel

Tower of the Noobs disappoints as the seventh installment in Ryan Rimmel's Noobtown series. Despite the promise of new adventures, this book fails to deliver anything of substance, ultimately feeling like a filler episode rather than a meaningful addition to the series.

Rimmel's writing lacks the spark and excitement that once drew readers to the series, with flat prose and uninspired dialogue.

The plot meanders aimlessly, with little sense of direction or purpose. New characters are introduced haphazardly, adding little to the overall narrative, while old characters stagnate, their development stalling in favor of tired tropes and clichés.

Rating: ⭐ (1/5)

Die-hard fans of the series may find some enjoyment in revisiting familiar settings and characters, but for others, Tower of the Noobs is likely to be a forgettable addition to the franchise.

Love this series. Definitely have to be a l’il immature though. I laughed like crazy personally. Visiting elven town (Look Out!) and all the body humor jokes that come with that was hilarious. Especially the sing off competition with the Dalton girls.

I do feel that the humor could be turned down just a hair. I know I know this is blasphemy, but I felt the story itself suffered a scotche because of it. I love all the classes and skills that he encounters as he remorts. Last book it was as a cleric and this one as a monk. These brought so many opportunities for cool character development that wasn’t utilized anywhere near as much as they could have.

Still one of my favorite series though. Especially the audible version! Johnathan McClain does the most epic narrating work. The voices and joke delivery is spot on. One of my top three narrators for sure. This series has to be experienced in audible form.

3.5 ⭐'s really. I enjoyed the story but I felt like the build up didn't lead to an adequate payoff. I get that there are more books coming and we're catching hints of what's to come but still, it felt like there were implicit promises that the author made in the story that didn't get fulfilled. And all the old movie references are starting to get tired.
Was there even a tower in the book?

Jim starts over again so he can come back as a wizard and build up those skill levels. This gets him into a lot of the expected problems. The best thing about the book is the badger's secret identity as a legendary and heroic academic professor. It leads to dozens of frankly hilarious interactions and finally to one truly stupendous battle that was just oodles of fun.

We also get to see the elven lands in this novel and learn just what it means to be an Elf Buddy. If you thought it was anything like Tolkein's elf friend, you are mistaken. The reality is much more humorous, as is the secret of the elven plague that Jim helped to bring to an end.

The ending of this book surprised me mightily despite the fact that I predicted key components. I guess I just didn't believe that Rimmell would go that route, but he did, and it's very good. The next novel has the potential to be even better.

This LITRPG series began as a fun and exciting adventure featuring plenty of action and humor. However, the humor has continued to deteriorate and become increasingly immature, to the point where it has become annoying. The narration by Johnathan McClain was good, with the exception of a slew of annoying voices he introduces in support of some of the characters. The introduction of the Valley Girl and Surfer Dude speech, a woke elf society, along with the fact that I have finished the books I purchased on sale, has led me to decide to stop reading this series. Tower of the Noobs 1.75 Stars rounded up to 2 Stars. Ultimately, I was entertained but disappointed.

The not quite final boss battle.

Everything comes crashing down around the big boss, thanks to Jim and his variety of friends. He even convinces some unlikely allies to help - or at least to not get in the way.

This installment jumps perspective between a few groups of characters, making following the action a little difficult if you can’t read in long sittings. And, as with the other books, there are jumps in the action that make me scratch my head and wonder how that happened. (Did I miss something, or was it never stated?)

This entire series is littered with puns and cultural references, but previously, it has seemed that the underlying story was the focus. In this volume, that story seems to be taking more of a back seat to the humor.

The humor was actually entertaining at some times and the story did progress, but if I had had the same impression of earlier books in the series, I would probably not have continued.

I'm sure this book has its audience, but I would not recommend it to anyone not already committed to the story.

I love this series so much!
It is one of the best series, with such good comedy to it. I also love the fact that the audio addition gets really close to breaking that forth wall without barreling through it.
You do get to learn more about the back story for people, and see more of the bad guys, but really... the mayor is the center for most of the story. And the ending promises the next book is going to be even more interesting.

I'm not giving up on this series because the characters are enjoyable and the dialogue is fantastic, but I may have to wait until the entire series is complete and go back to re-listen to the entire thing because even though I wrote the summary after book 6, it was so hard keeping track of all of the secondary characters and a lot of the plot in this one.

Almost too silly

Alternate universe, LitRPG light, OP adventure

Plenty of twisted pop culture and fantasy and SF references here, with MC Jim and his band of friends struggling to end the Dark Overlord. Reading book 6 and 7 back to back was almost overload. I guess there will be a book 8.

Almost like he isn't even trying anymore

It's almost like the author isn't even trying anymore. He spent more time trying to force in bad jokes and references than he did trying to write the story. If you took out all of the horrible jokes poorly done references, you would have the start to a pretty decent book.

This story is bananas, pure and simple. The jokes, the crazy characters, the demons... this whole book is a can of hilarious worms. Very enjoyable, but I was hoping we would get the ending of this series with all the epic battles... I will stay tuned, but I would very much like to see the mayor of Windfall win....

another great read

Ryan hit it out of the park again. His books are funny with the right amount of crunchy to keep the crunchier fans interested. I loved the book and I’m excited to see this story arc close with the next book.

Unfortunately the series lost it´s magic

The book was quite a slog to read for me and i had to struggle to finish it. The plot was just meh. I hated the narcistic elves and the author´s fixation on dragon penises.
