Yamamoto Hideo , is a Japanese manga artist best known for the manga series "Ichi the Killer" (which was adapted into a live-action film in 2001) and the series, Homunculus (manga). Recurring themes in his manga are crime, sexual deviations, and psychology.
That is seriously disturbing, mental, and thought-provoking. I might get insane for real. The amount of internal screaming I've let out over the course of this volume! This is by far the heaviest to digest, and the hardest one to judge... I still have conflicted feelings but my head is still screaming on the overflowing cuts of symbolisms meshed together. I think I'm going to have a heart attack, so let me breathe for a moment.
I seriously feel for the sand girl. Not having emotions and such. It literally took me back to my high school days, watching Inside Out in the classroom for the first time, and my God did I cry so loudly saying sorry repeatedly. My classmates hugged me, asking what was wrong. That was the first time I broke down. It was a mess, but it was freeing.
When you don't feel a thing... that you're so empty and can't feel even sadness, anymore? That's a huge slap on my face. The movie was just screaming to me that I opened myself and poured everything right then and there. What a mess. I was young and disturbed.
Back to the story, this is going to be an unpopular opinion. But the rape that took place? I will treat it as a metaphor. It couldn't simply be here just because Yamamoto suddenly felt so horny (lol.) It was written here from the start.
The sand girl had this appetite for sex illusions and the need to be one with the subject of her delusions. She's empty and formless. Nakoshi, trying to penetrate her with his metal robotic hand, is him trying to give her a shape or form... freeing her from her homunculus. He knows because they're one and the same. It's a metaphor.
And Nakoshi succeeded in doing so.
The sand girl's finally able to feel emotions and kicked her way out of that terrible, shocking, situation. Back to the Freudian theory that the pierced guy presented: Sand girl found an overwhelming sense of consciousness and is finally able to grasp reality (dissolving all her sexual delusions) getting her emotions intact, to be freed from her homunculus.
But what will this freedom bring in Nakoshi's existence? We'll see that in the next volume.
So the in the movie did happen in the manga, and was just as unnecessary, tasteless, and out of place. It's even more aggressive and gross in the manga too (and I'm not even talking about him ), and showing the girl smiling longingly from her window after it was all kinds of wrong. Sigh. Disappointing on many levels.
The movie basically glosses over the fact that he and it's never really mentioned again, so I am curious to see what happens in the manga, especially if it continues to follow the same plot. I just don't understand why he acted this way when it didn't seem like something he had in him. Dude shows absolutely no remorse, even acts proud of himself.
Now I wonder why this manga has so many fans ... but here I am continuing to read it ...
I really didn’t understand the point of this entire volume. It was just full of sexual violence and vague plot elements. It was extremely uncomfortable which is what I expect from horror but there seemed to be no actual point to this volume. It was just genuinely disgusting for no reason, I hope the next volume clears things up.
Disturbante. No, è una violenza inaudita.
I wasn't very into the previous volumes either, but this one is where I'm noping out. Everything about the teenage girl plot screams "THIS WAS WRITTEN BY A MAN!!!" The 17 year old MINOR is portrayed as an unemotionless seductress who is going to "consume" the men, and who 'ackshually' had the power in those scenes. OK, Hideo Yamamoto! Eat shit!
This story had SO much potential. I attempted to give it the benefit of the doubt, but it just leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.
This manga was an amazing read up until Yukani appeared. However, it’s not Yukani herself that makes me uncomfortable. I am mesmerized with her character, the whole “symbolic sand monster” thing is extremely intriguing, so much to where I just couldn’t put the book down. Her entire personality is phenomenally written.
What I really, really dislike was the sudden derailment of the plot. This volume in specific really ruined the entire manga, it was so fast paced, and in the worst way possible. I don’t mind violence being written in manga, but this move in particular is just so disappointing, unnecessary, and disgusting.
I know some may argue that the point of …that scene.. was to make people uncomfortable, and to that I honestly could care less. It was cheaply slapped together and overall really fucking weird.
So, if I was confused before, after this volume I'm baffled. I'm not even sure what happened in the last few pages.. did they? did they not? I don't even know at this point. and what software? what program? what installation? what is he talking about???
I get the fact that he is linked to the homunculi now but I wish there were another way.. that was just disgusting I was just made extremely uncomfortable by the amount of purposeless sexual violence.
This volume has been the most disturbing, and perplexing of them all...
And gross!
I haven't really understood a lot of things in the series, maybe a lot of things don't make any sense, but this is where I found them to be a bit too much...
I couldn't give it a four star, either because I don't really know what I've just read, or because I'm too naive...
But it wasn't a complete waste of time, journey into weirdness and puzzlement never is...
Anyway, it's Mr. Nakoshi who has solved the case, after one hell of a show inside his car(actually, it's completely solved in the next volume; he thinks it's solved, but it isn't...).
Even though I couldn't fathom most of the things, unfathomable things are always both sad and interesting to me- those thoughts and chats/talks inside the car both disappointed and intrigued me...
Mr. Nakoshi has gotten more of a mysterious character in this volume, and those mysteries are only building up; at some points, I nearly took him for someone who has completely lost it...
that was so disturbing and uncomfortable to read… what is so necessary about violently raping a 17-year-old high school girl to the plot? while i dont really get triggered by this manga’s trigger warnings, this is just.. i just couldn’t comprehend any of these mindfuck things. well im going to drop this and watch the movie instead just bc im curious about how it ends. after saw glimpses of 6th volume i can tell this manga wouldnt stand a chance on me anymore
Okay... It was amazing up to this volume and now I have to stop. There was a violent rape scene that went on for a while and I just couldn't stand it. I don't understand why the protagonist had to rape her to get her "true form" out of her homunculi form... Unfortunately I didn't find that part of the story necessary and I am going to stop reading this series.
That's one way to lose all your readers, the likeness of your main characters, your dignity as a writer and just my total utter disappointment from what i saw was becoming a shit show.
The most painted over with "fantastic themes" sexual assault (the whole ass volume) scene ive ever seen I mean I thought I spit on your grave and American Mary was unwatchable but holly shit those don't even come close to the depravity of this one since 1) it's a minor, clearly stated and brought up often with the whole gross glorification of her being a virgin and "popping her cherry" (by two grown ass adults btw) 2) done by the main character over the subtext of her being some kind of demon that represents all the women he fucked ? Uh ? Main character is a life long rapist ? Why the fuck would I continue reading any of that shit,
Ok it's the next day and thinking back, she's the label demon right so...being an SA victim.. IS JUST ANOTHER LABEL!?? ALL THE OTHER ONES ARE STILL TRUE, IT DIDN'T MAKE HER A PERSON OF HER OWN !??? Motherfucker did not think of any of the shit he was writing his justification for the SA shit flips on it's head and it really shows there will never be justification for SA in a narrative like this no matter how much you layer with self fulfilling morals that never apply to the real world and the shit with the uno card of SA is so fucking stupid bro you bring a minor in front of her house to fuck her in your shit ride with your dumn ass robot hand that can "feel her" and what she ..made you do it ? Alirght dumbass, theres plenty of the other demon things around you chose to focus in this one you put yourself into that situation like this is the most shallow shit ever made what a waste of ink
this is a hard volume to talk about, and i think thats the point. its uncomfortable, gross, makes you want to crawl out of your skin. if people hate this volumn, totally understand. im taking this volume from the light that this is SUPPOSED to be gross to read. you are not supposed to support the main character and seeing this shift from her thinking she has power and understanding no. she never had power and the time she finally got her true emotions to shine was in this moment of terror. ofc i will still read on and i hope they take this in the direction of him being wrong but... who knows. (also he is def unreliable as a character so lets not take his word as gospel)
