Edward McKendree Bounds was a Methodist minister, revivalist, author and lawyer.

Unsuccessful in the California gold rush of 1849, E.M. Bounds returned home to Missouri and became the state’s youngest practicing attorney at age 19. In his early twenties he was deeply impacted by the Third Great Awakening, and at age 24 he was ordained for ministry. During his lifetime he pastored churches, traveled as an evangelist, served as a Civil War chaplain, edited a Christian periodical and was a devoted husband and father. But E.M. Bounds is best known for prayer. His daily habit was to spend the time between 4 am and 7 am praying. His writings on prayer are widely acclaimed to be among the finest of any author before or since.

This is such an interesting book. It makes me understand why the older generation/churches have a reputation of being bible beaters or pushing heaven and hell so much that is all they care about. This stresses the idea that Earth is an unstable, insecure place and we are to be pilgrims just passing through to the stable, secure, and eternal Heaven. It gives supported detail as to the characteristics of heaven that make it such a desirable goal of life. His thought was that heaven was not discussed enough as a place where we should want to go, but in reality, we will dwell with God and have none of the earthly struggles, and as we go through our walk we should aim solely for heaven as our hope. One of the most striking parts to me was the citizenship in heaven and the comparison of how much a roman citizenship was worth (see the power it gave paul) and how much greater our citizenship in heaven will be with the perfect God and system. It made me think deeply about Heaven far more than just the final destination, but rather a place to be longed for and worked for and thought of.

Buenísimo, lo leí en la traducción castellana. Súper recomendable. Articula muy bien nuestro futuro hogar en el cielo, haciéndonos ver lo frágil, lo pequeño y efímera que es nuestra vida terrenal. ¡Ay Señor, ven pronto y llévanos a Tu ciudad, a nuestro eterno hogar!

Heaven is the hope of every Christian, the place where they will be with their Lord forever. It is the place that we pilgrims think of daily and long to be in. And E.M. Bounds stirs up this natural longing with elegant (if a little outdated) language that touches the soul of his readers.

Take a look into Heaven now as Bounds explains the key aspects that make Heaven such a wonderful place. What the author describes is a place of beauty, rest, and joy that is boundless. Using biblical references, Bounds explores what the Lord has told His people about their eternal home.

This is a classic book by an American pastor from the late 1800s/early 1900s, and it has stood the test of time for a reason. I recommend this to all Christians who need a reminder of just what their running toward. The language is a bit old fashioned, but it is well worth reading.

The language is a bit dated, and some may find it difficult. The message, however, is inspiring. A worthwhile read for those who have set their sites on making it to Heaven.
