Helen Beatrix Potter was an English author, illustrator, mycologist, and conservationist who is best known for her children's books, which featured animal characters such as Peter Rabbit.
Born into a wealthy household, Potter was educated by governesses and grew up isolated from other children. She had numerous pets, and through holidays in Scotland and the Lake District, developed a love of landscape, flora, and fauna, all of which she closely observed and painted. Because she was a woman, her parents discouraged intellectual development, but her study and paintings of fungi led her to be widely respected in the field of mycology.
In her thirties, Potter published the highly successful children's book The Tale of Peter Rabbit and became secretly engaged to her publisher, Norman Warne, causing a breach with her parents, who disapproved of his social status. Warne died before the wedding.
Potter eventually published 24 children's books, the most recent being The Tale of Kitty-in-Boots (2016), and having become financially independent of her parents, was able to buy a farm in the Lake District, which she extended with other purchases over time.
In her forties, she married a local solicitor, William Heelis. She became a sheep breeder and farmer while continuing to write and illustrate children's books. Potter died in 1943 and left almost all of her property to The National Trust in order to preserve the beauty of the Lake District as she had known it, protecting it from developers.
Potter's books continue to sell well throughout the world, in multiple languages. Her stories have been retold in various formats, including a ballet, films, and in animation.
Ich bin vielleicht schon zu alt für dieses Art von Büchern. So richtig einfangen konnte das Buch mich nicht. Die Zeichnungen sind ganz schön, aber die Geschichten dazu gefallen mir nicht. 😐
I listened to the librivox recording. as for the stories, they were great. so delightful! as for the lady reading them, she did great until she decided to do the animal voices. oh no honey! don't do that!
This was one of the first books my dad ever got for me and read to me. I love the illustrations and the stories are quite funny. Good stories for young animal lovers.
As a kid, I only read a few of these stories, so at least half of these were new to me. I was expecting cute little stories with simple morals, but was really surprised by what I actually got. The tales were incredibly funny, but often surprisingly dark (I'm looking at you, Samuel Whiskers!). And the animals were in turn lazy, and selfish, and rather stupid. I loved every minute of it! My favorite moment in particular was when Mr. Drake Puddle Duck is asked to help Tom Kitten get his little jacket on, so Mr. Drake puts it on himself and just wanders away, mumbling about what a nice day it is! I had to read it over a second time to make sure that I didn't miss something. But, no, it was just a really oblivious duck! And most of the stories had little moments like that. I never thought that they would make me laugh so much!
After reading American Psycho, I needed something light and fun to read, and I'm so glad I picked this collection, because wow! These stories are so precious! I'm especially fond of The Tale of Jemima Puddle-Duck and the various tales featuring Benjamin Bunny!
After reading 3 different biographies, watching a movie and a couple videos about Beatrix Potter, I felt I really should read her stories and see her artwork!
July 2022 reread: Perfect book for a cozy read with illustrations I wish I could slip into. I find value and entertainment in every story, although some are definitely better than others. Some should be better known--Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle and Squirrel Nutkin, for instance.
*** 2014 The gentle, old-time atmosphere of these stories is cozy and soothing, with soft illustrations and simple tales, each with its own moral. Of course, not all is gentle--there is killing or near-killing, brutality, malice, desperate escapes. But the outcomes are always good and the general feeling safety. The illustrations are half of the virtue of the stories, which would lose a good deal without them, though they are meaningful on their own.
My favorites are The Tailor of Gloucester, Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle, The Pie and the Patty-Pan, Squirrel Nutkin, and The Roly-Poly Pudding.
A wonderful collection of stories which can be enjoyed by all. Each story comes with illustrations drawn be Beatrix Potter herself and are beautiful additions to the stories. The stories can be the focus of literacy lessons or as part of a wider topic, for example the victorians or nature due to the time frame and setting in which these stories are set. Would definitely recommend incorporating these stories into school life.
This book grew up with me and has been by side for 14 years. I don't know where my parents got this book from.
This book has all the nursery rhymes that I heard during my childhood. It was very satisfying to read all the rhymes again and learn what you didn't when you read it the last time. Other than the rhymes, the illustrations are also very beautiful and is full of vintage style.
Was fun to read this collect and revisit some childhood favorites. Disappointed the ecopy on loan through Libby (via my library) did not include any of the book's illustrations.
Loved it! I just love Beatrix Potter and how she makes her characters come to life. I also love how the words are challenging. Makes for a good sit-down book.😊
So comforting I actually listened to this on Spotify through the podcast 'the Sleepy Bookshelf' and lemme tell you that lil show eases anxiety within seconds... highly recommend
