One might presume that at this point this volume would be quite dated, and while of course it doesn't cover developments in film theory over the last several decades, I have encountered few other sources that manages to be clear and elucidating while also being gracefully written in and of itself. A reference book I find myself turning to often.
I really am not into aesthetic theory at all, but I figured I need to actually understand it to move ahead. I read this like 4 years ago and didn't understand it at all, but now it makes a bit more sense. Obviously it's a little dated, but it provides a good foundation from which to tackle more contemporary theories. While I can't say I enjoyed reading it, it was worthwhile.
