Albert Uderzo (1928 - 2020) was a legendary French comic book artist and scriptwriter. The son of Italian immigrants, he is best known as the co-founder and illustrator of the Asterix series in collaboration with René Goscinny. He also drew other comics such as Oumpah-pah, again with Goscinny.

Miraculix ist verzweifelt. Seine letzte Ration Steinöl neigt sich dem Ende und der phönizische Händler Epidemais, der ihm Nachschub liefern soll, ist immer noch nicht da. Als der Geschäftsmann samt Ware doch endlich an der gallischen Küste ankommt, offenbart sich eine Katastrophe: Epidemais hat das Steinöl vergessen. Und ohne Steinöl kein Zaubertrank. Und ohne Zaubertrank haben die unbeugsamen Gallier den römischen Legionen wenig entgegenzusetzen.

So kommt es, dass Asterix und Obelix sich auf den Weg in den Nahen Osten machen, um in der Wüste das mysteriöse Steinöl zu finden. Begleitet werden sie dabei von einem fahrenden Druiden namens Nullnullsix, der kurz vorher im gallischen Dorf eingetroffen ist. Doch können sie diesem seltsamen Druiden wirklich trauen? Und warum scheinen ihn die Insekten so zu umschwirren?

Netter Band, der die Gallier ins antike Israel und Phönizien führt. Gespickt mit vielen schönen historischen Details, parodiert er hier altbekannte Agententhriller und spielt auf die Entdeckung des Erdöls an. Interessant – am Ende findet Miraculix sogar eine alternative zum scheinbar alternativlosen Erdöl. Vielleicht gelingt uns das auch irgendwann.

First published in French in 1981, as L'Odyssée d�Astérix, Asterix and the Black Gold, was first published in English in 1982.
Julius Caesar, at the advice of his spymaster M Surreptitius, dispatches the villainous Druid, Dubbelosix, as a spy, to finally destroy the Gaullish village that has become the bane of his life.
Meanwhile, it happens that the Druid Getafix is right out of rock oil, which is a vital ingredient of the magic potion. So Asterix and Obelix se t out for Mesopotamia with Phoenician merchant, Ekonomikrisis, who our friends met in �Asterix the Gladiator�, and unfortunately also, with Dubbelosix.
Their search for rock oil takes them past the coast of Phoenicia, where they come under fire, and to Judea (where they enjoy the hospitality of the only people who have ever to this day been indigenous to that land, the Jews), and sleep over at a little stable in Bethlehem. Then it is into the desert where they get caught in the crossfire of the Akkadians, Hittites, Assyrians and Medes, who are all at war with each other.
After that they have to face the heat and thirst of the desert, in their search.
Dubbelosix is something of a parody of James Bond (and looks like Sean Connery) Perhaps the French author Uderzo, wanted to poke a little fun of this British national hero.
Asterix albums have a lot of parody and satire in them, which is only apparent to older readers.
After the rather weak �Asterix and the Great Divide� which was the first Asterix book written solely by Uderzo, �Asterix and the Black Gold�, is a superb example that like Goscinny, Uderzo too knew how to write good comic scripts.

AWESOME!!! There is nothing that comes close to Asterix - I have the whole series, both on e-books and hard-copy and they are some of most treasured possessions. I grew up with them and they are simply the best!

A (már sajnos csak) egyszerzős szériába tartozik, ami azt jelenti, hogy a rajzok pazarak, mint mindig, a sztori viszont messze nem olyan vicces, mint René Goscinny idejében.

A cím azonban teljesen félrevezető: franciául nyilván kicsit mást jelent az "odüsszeia", úgy értem általánosabb a jelentése, mert ennek a történetnek halvány köze sincs Odüsszeuszhoz vagy bármi homéroszi kontenthez. ("A sziklaolaj" vagy "Asterix Elő-Ázsiában" lett volna esetleg megfelelő cím. Látom, hogy az angol nyelvű kiadásokban változtattak is az eredetin.)

A Júdeában játszódó részek felhúzták a laposabb előkészítést, így már egész jó kis kötet lett a végére.

With Black Gold, Uderzo mixes oil politics, espionage, and the Middle East. Getafix needs rock oil to complete his potion, so our heroes travel to Mesopotamia. They're trailed by the nefarious Dubbelosix, a James Bond-style spy, and sabotaged by a Roman traitor. It’s a clever, fast-paced adventure that feels more like a Bond spoof than traditional Asterix, but still fun and visually delightful. The shifting desert landscapes and multicultural gags offer fresh flavor.

I read this in 1008, while prepping for a College debate on oil politics. Funny how a comic helped more than The Hindu. It made me realise that even world affairs can be filtered through humor. I wasn’t sure about the spy motif at first, but Obelix mistaking camels for weird horses still makes me laugh. Not classic, but gutsy.

It's Asterix time, once more. Boy, feels like It's been a while since I picked up one of these. But 'Asterix & the Black Gold' is the just the right kind of story to get back into the mayhem.



The magic potion which gives the Gauls indomitable strength to keep the Roman legions at bay. Getafix the druid is worried over the same potion; a key ingredient required for making the potion has run out. Without it, no potion, and no super strength.

Now Asterix & Obelix need to travel of Mesopotamia, in search of the ingredient; the common rock oil, which the Romans have come to call 'Ptreo Oleum'. But unbeknownst to them, Caesar has dispatched a secret agent to discover the recipe of the potion, and thwart their efforts to making them. The suave and sinister Dubbelosix.



Now the duo have to face Roman legions, Spies, some hapless pirates and other challenges, traverse the great desert all to fulfill their quest, and ensure the survival of their village. Will they succeed in their mission? Read the book to find out.


It's all fun and games until you consider the Boar-ateral damage of the Gaul's explosive appetites.

Our favorite Roman soldiers are back with a bang. So many puns per frame. Must not Laugh. Must.Not.Laugh! Failing.


You get distracted by all the cartoonish caricatures, and out of the left field get smacked by this crisp and awe inspiring portrait of a cityscape. Bravo Uderzo.

Me ha gustado mucho. No se nota la ausencia de Goscinny en esta historia, o por lo menos yo así lo percibo. Los chistes están muy bien metidos y la historia es adictiva. De los mejores álbumes.

? Voor mij vooral nostalgie, lezen van Asterix en Obelix. Dit album kwam me wel erg bekend voor, lijkt toch niet zo lang geleden dat ik het gelezen heb.
🤔 Leuke verwijzingen naar James Bond (spion, nulnulnix, de vlieg met boodschappen) en de ontmoeting met Jozef in Jeruzalem en het dorpje Bethelehem ;-)
Ook in dit album (nieuwe druk uit 2018) weer 16 pagina's interessante toelichtingen, onder meer de ingrediënten van toverdrank...

Panoramix fica fora de si porque o mercador a quem costuma comprar um dos ingredientes necessários para fazer a poção mágica teima em não aparecer e a poção está a esgotar-se.
Astérix e Obélix partem em busca do ingrediente com um inesperado companheiro de viagem que se lhes juntou, que mais não é do que o agente secreto de Roma zerozerosix que lhes vai boicotando todos os esforços.

Muito bom.
Dos javalis que se servem de patrulhas romanas para fugir a Obélix às aventuras de lugar em lugar exótico de cada vez que lhes boicotam a possibilidade de obter o ingrediente em falta a ação não pára.
E o que dizer dos momentos hilariantes do episódio no deserto (em que são atacados por erro por uma série de grupos) e das jogadas de mestre do espião romano zerozerosix (desenhado à imagem de Sean Connery, o inigualável 007 – Divino!).
De referir também que esta história é de 1981, mas ninguém diria, tal é a atualidade de algumas das cenas.

[capa] – A capa é, claro, bem desenhada, mas pouco nos diz de tudo o que nos espera neste livro.
[arte interior] – O desenho é lindo, seguindo um belíssimo traço clássico da banda desenhada franco-belga, para cuja lenda de excelência muito contribuiu o talentoso Uderzo (de quem é o texto e o desenho deste volume), e as cores não ficam atrás (basta ver como foram maravilhosamente aplicadas na cena noturna junto à muralha da cidade de Jerusalém).

Another fun Asterix read.

Synopsis
Panoramix needs a special ingredient to make the magic potion but he ran out and now the Gauls are pretty defenseless.
At the same time, the Romans send a spy, Zerozerosix to Galicia to find out the secret recipe of the magic potion.
As Asterix and Obelix set out to find the missing ingredient Zerozerosix joins them and tries to stop them.

Review
It's a fun read as always, with a lot of jokes a bit ahead of their time. This one had Asterix and Obelix staying in Bethlehem and Pontius Pilate made an appearance.

Un peu monotone... Le passage dans le désert est le seul un peu distrayant, lorsque Astérix et Obélix croise successivement un florilège de peuples moyen - orientaux en guerre les uns avec les autres.

Le reste de l'aventure est à peine égayé par la présence d'un Zérozérosix parodiant (vite fait) James Bond.

Je n'ai pas détesté cette aventure d'Astérix. C'est certain qu'à la longue, les calembours m'énervaient. L'idée de la mouche était mauvaise et ne m'a pas du tout fait rire. Le clin d'oeil à Sean Connery était correct. Sinon en général, j'ai trouvé cette BD quand même pas si mal.

Mi-a plăcut mult.

Rămas fără unul dintre ingredientele poțiunii magice care le dă puteri deosebite oamenilor, Panoramix îi trimite pe Asterix și Obelix în Mesopotamia, să i-l aducă. Dornic să afle secretul galilor nesupuși, un druid aflat în serviciul Romei li se alătură celor doi eroi și încearcă, prin orice mijloace, să le saboteze misiunea.

Al doilea album realizat doar de Uderzon menține ștacheta ridicată. Da, mi se pare că autorul apelează la un truc care nu poate da rezultate pe termen lung, dar care, pe termen scurt, cucerește. Trucul fiind acela că se folosește de elementele pe care seria deja le-a inoculat în mintea cititorului și le inserează în jurul unei povești care te prinde, fără să fie ieșită din comun. Ici-colo sunt inserate și câteva elemente originale, ce dau impresia de prospețime, partea vizuală este fără cusur - și iată cum, din toate aceste elemente, iese un produs finit care arată bine.

În general, poveștile unde Asterix și Obelix călătoresc în sânul altor civilizații au reprezentat punctul de atracție al seriei, deoarece translatarea stereotipurilor popoarelor actuale la strămoși a fost făcută mereu inteligent, aducând hohote de râs garantate (pentru cei care gustă acest tip de umor, desigur - iar eu mă număr printre respectivii). De data asta, cei doi ajung în Fenicia, Israel și călătoresc spre Mesopotamia - acest din urmă periplu oferind un regal deopotrivă amuzant și menit a pune pe gânduri, mai ales în contextul conflictelor interminabile din Orientul Mijlociu.

Druidul-spion Zerozerosix, care, la a șaptea încercare, a trecut probele, oferă ocazia parodierii parțiale a celebrului 007 (personajul chiar aduce destul de bine cu Sean Connery) - de data aceasta aflat în tabăra „băieților răi”. Insecta îndrăgostită, ce transportă mesaje scrise pe pergamente minuscule, mi s-a părut o găselniță teribil de amuzantă. Pirații au din nou parte de suficient timp de expunere, iar modul cum sunt tratați în acest episod este original. A fost plăcută reîntâlnirea cu fenicianul ce-și conduce ambarcațiunea ca pe o societate pe acțiuni, m-au amuzat bufnițele plecate în pribegie, ce apăreau periodic pe parcursul acțiunii, iar cei doi mistreți care puneau la punct strategii menite să le salveze pielea în fața lui Obellix au fost savuroși.

Cum am spus, partea vizuală a fost impecabilă. Prim planuri perfecte, scene de acțiune extrem de vii, imagini panoramice excepționale plasate exact acolo unde trebuia pentru a avea impact maxim - toate au contribuit la realizarea unui regal în ceea ce privește desenele.

După două albume realizate fără sprijinul lui Goscinny, pot spune că Uderzon se achită excelent de misiunea sa, iar seria pare a cunoaște o nouă perioadă de glorie.

Asterix and the Black Gold is the 26th volume of the Asterix comic strip series that was written and illustrated by Albert Uderzo. It was published in 1981 and it is a surprisingly solid entry in the series.

Asterix and Obelix must travel to the Middle East to find oil that Getafix suddenly needs for his magic potion. The fact that he at first needed the potion was already a convenient plot hole, but later he found the other supplement, which felt ridiculously convenient. Still, the story mostly worked because it was a rousing adventure and a great return to the travelogues that Goscinny once wrote with gusto.

There is so much to love here, in particular the character of Dubbelosix. He is an obvious riff on James Bond and especially Sean Connery as he literally looks like the actor, but he was also a very amusing villain as he was smirking throughout while consistently losing. But I did not care for the fly that followed him around. That was a needless fantastic element that made no sense. The return of Ekonomikrisis, though, was great and he was a terrific plot device.

The main duo got to argue here in one very well written sequence and Dogmatix discovering oil was a great touch. The story flows well, it’s reasonably diverting and adventurous, plus the illustrations are quite detailed, frequently even gorgeous and benefitting from terrific darker-hued panels once again. The dialogue was also pretty strong here and so was the humor for the most part.

My main issue with this volume is its middle stretch that felt rough. In particular, their meet-up with the Sumerians, Akkadians and other peoples from this area was poorly written as it was rushed and hardly as memorable as you’d expect from this real life area. As an adventure story, this comic book worked because it was well illustrated and it featured strong characterization and humor, but it wasn’t a truly great Asterix story due to the fact that it was overly convenient and rushed in its second half, plus it was overstuffed with spy genre references.

Overall, Asterix and the Black Gold is a pretty good installment, though it has its significant flaws. It was too convenient and rough in the second half, but the first half was great and the characterization was excellent here and so were the illustrations. It’s a solid travelogue, but one that also could have been much better.

Asterix and the black gold depicts the adventures of Asterix and Obelix in the Middle East, while they search for petroleum. The village's druid gets desperate at the beginning of the volume, as there is no petroleum left and it is an ingredient for the magic potion. A Phoenician merchant forgets to bring him the oil and he falls ill.

Another druid, Dubbelosix, succeeds to revive him. But he is in fact a Roman spy sent by a Roman official, Devius Surreptitious. Our heroes must go to the Middle East to get petroleum. After a funny adventure in the desert, meeting various friendly to them people, but hostile to each other, Dogmatix finds an oil well, the moment they start to despair. They carry some back to their village but the Roman spy throws it over the ocean while sailing.

It seems like a disaster but when our discontent heroes reach their village they find their fellow villagers beating the Romans as usual! It turns out that Getafix managed to prepare the magic potion substituting the petroleum with beetroot juice. So the whole journey was for nothing after all!

What I liked most in this volume was the parody of the James Bond character, making fun all the sophisticated gadgets that he uses in his adventures. There is even a fly-messenger which Dubbelosix and Surreptitius use to communicate, and falls in love with the traitor druid. To top it all off the face of the roman spy resembles that of Sean Connery! Another funny event was at the start of the story, when two wild-boars learn a trick to save their lives from their hunters and especially Obelix. They continually lead them into Roman patrols and escape while the Gauls are busy teaching the Romans a lesson!

Uderzon toinen yksinään tekemä albumi on ehdottomasti hänen parhaansa. Albumi pohjautuu kahteen niinkin erilaiseen pohjamateriaaliin kuin James Bond -tarinat ja Raamattu, mutta viitteet pysyvät Uderzolla hyvin hallussa.

Tarina käynnistyy kahdella taholla samaan aikaan. Caesar lähettää druidikoulutuksen saaneen vakoojan Nollanollakuusixin urkkimaan tietoonsa taikajuoman salaisuutta. Samaan aikaan Asterixin kylässä taikajuoman valmistuksessa välttämätön vuoriöljy on loppunut, joten Asterix ja Obelix lähtevät Mesopotamiaan sitä noutamaan. Nollanollakuusix päätyy matkalle mukaan ja luvassa on monivaiheinen seikkailu Välimeren itärannikon maisemissa.

Asterixin harharetkien alkupuoli mukailee kekseliäästi Bond-elokuvia: Sean Conneryn näköinen Nollanollakuusix hyödyntää takaa-ajoissa ja taisteluissa erilaisia teknisiä innovaatioita. Kun päästään "luvattuun maahan" ja lähestytään Jerusalemia, tämä puoli tarinassa saa antaa tilaa hilpeille viittauksille Raamattuun ja juutalaiseen kulttuuriin. Käänteitä ja tapahtumia riittää aina yllättävään loppuun saakka, ja esimerkiksi viestejä kuljettavan kärpäsen seikkailut jaksavat naurattaa. Tarina on toki hieman episodimainen, kuten usein Goscinnyn matkaseikkailuissakin. Kulttuuriset viittaukset ja yksittäiset gagit nousevat vahvaa juonta tärkeämmiksi.

Uderzolla on visuaalinen puoli edelleen hyvin hallussa; erityisesti sivun 30 kuva Jerusalemista on upea. Hahmojen elävyys ja ilmeikkyys saa lukijan eläytymään tarinaan.

Tämä oli parempi albumi kuin muistinkaan, jopa parempi kuin jotkin Goscinnyn heikommista suorituksista. Valitettavasti Uderzo ei kyennyt myöhemmin pitämään yllä samaa tasoa.
