Heat in real life is the bane of Vic’s life, whose favorite season is winter, and Vic’s life is far more mundane than fiction. And when it comes to fiction, the hotter the better is Vic’s motto. Make it romantic, make it sexy, make it erotic, but definitely make it hot.

This story has a contemporary setting, but it could be well set 100 years before and it would be the same, since things have not changed much in the country.

Justice has a little ranch and little money. He makes ends meet, but barely; his life is not bad, when the season is good he can manage also some extra, but most of the time, he is only him and his farm animals. Justice is gay, but in an isolated ranch near a very small town USA, he can only limit himself to watch the bullriders on saturday afternoon show television and dream of them at night.

Then Tuck knocks at his doors: tall, handsome and good at work, Tuck is a drifter who works for a roof and a meal. Roof and meal Justice can share, and he is more than willing to share also his bed when he realizes that Tuck is interested, but Justice tries to not being used to have Tuck around, since, sooner or later, he will go. And how he can not? What can draw Tuck to remain? Justice has a bit of self-esteem problem, he doesn't see what he can be for Tuck, home, partner and love all together.

The story is pretty and not very long, 52 pages/20.000 words. Justice and Tuck love and sex is easy and simple like the life they have; no impossible dreams of endless and repeated sex in the barn, no Justice who suddenly became a sex pro when having a man beside; Justice and Tuck work and love and work, and sometime they are too tired to love. As always this life fascinates me, since for my culture is something long ago forgotten.

Hmm, can I give this a 4 for the characters (Justice in particular) and a 2 for the story? I liked Justice so much. Hard working, lonely, caring and sweet. I just liked him. He works his family’s ranch, left to him by a hateful father but a connection to his loved grandfather. He works harvest to harvest, sometimes subsisting on peanut butter in the face of all that hard work.

When a drifter comes by, Tuck, who is willing to work for room and board, he takes the chance and they begin to form a relationship. Tuck is a hard worker and he is gentle and caring with Justice. He has a big secret, however, one that destroy them. When the sheriff comes calling and lets Justice in on the secret, Justice is immediately on Tuck’s side, as a loyal friend and lover would be.

My issue with the story is there is so little explanation of what happened with the crime that I felt it was unbelievable. The ending was too simple and I felt it needed more. The length of the story is probably the reason but maybe then the crime should have been something less horrific, something that could be dismissed in a few paragraphs.

I liked the writing very much, alternating from serious to funny. “You know I’ve never done anything with the ass.” “I hope not, that’s called bestiality and I do believe it’s illegal”. Tuck, funny guy. I liked how appreciative both of them are for little things, like Dairy Queen sundaes and watching a movie together. They are sweet.

I read this book more than a year ago, so it's not fresh in my mind, but I did like it. It was well-written. The author made me care about the characters and their developing relationship. I enjoyed my time in this little world that he/she created.
