It's the dawn of the twenty-first century, or at least the year 2000. Instead of partying like it's 1999, Olympic gymnast Mark is ringing in the New Year alone in a hotel gym overlooking Sydney Harbour. When Mark's boyfriend Daniel returns unexpectedly from his job at a gold mine in Kalgoorlie, Mark shares his concerns over making the Australian Olympic team, and over maintaining their long-distance relationship for another year.
Mark is probably the only person in Sydney working out instead of celebrating for New Year's Eve. On the eve of the new millennium, New Year's Eve 1999, Mark is focused on a single goal, to completely recover from a recent knee injury. As an gymnast, he is determined to be a member of the Australian team when the Olympic Games begin in eight months. When his lover Daniel surprises Mark at the gym, they enjoy the fireworks display the government is putting on and create a celebration of their own.
This is the second holiday themed story I have read from G.S. Wiley and it is another exceptional story. It is not what you would necessarily expect but it is wonderful in the way that it combines the New Year's holiday celebration with the point at which these characters find themselves in their lives. I enjoyed everything about these men and their intimately sexy and erotic pairing. At the same time there is serious discussion between the two as Mark is based in Sydney to focus on his training while Daniel is in Kalgoorlie in Western Australia for his job. For a year and a half they have been maintaining a long-distance relationship, and they don't necessarily agree on what to do about it. What this story features is a relationship between two men who have to deal with circumstances that are not necessarily ideal, but who are willing to deal with anything for one another. This is another exceptional tale about love and devotion from a wonderful author.
Mark is an Australian Olympic Gymnast that during New Year's Eve of 2000 (the year in which Olympic were held in Sydney) instead of enjoying the holiday, is practicing. Mark is not at the best of his performance, but as an Australian athlete he can't not going to the Olympics, even if, maybe, it's not what he really wants. What Mark really wants is his lover Daniel, an mining engineer who is working far from Sydney: with Mark's training and physical problems, he can't leave Sydney, and Daniel can leave the mine only few time a year.
But on this special New Year's Eve, Daniel makes Mark happy, and he arrives to share the night with Mark and to say to his love to not worry, that he will always have an home and a lover, being a champion or not.
I like this story since it shows a moment in the life of two people that feel to me real; despite being deeply in love, Mark and Daniel live in different places due to their careers... love could be a very strong bond, but not always allow people to do as they wish. Secondly, I like that Mark is not an invincible hero... this is only a night in their life, 25 pages, so we don't know if Mark will make the Olympics or if he will be a winner, but we know that he is real, with doubts and hopes, and we know that, in a way or another, after the games, he will still have a life, not glamorous, but probably happy.
Mark is an Australian Olympic Gymnast working an trying to get fit for the next Olympics. Daniel works in the mines. They meet 3 years ago, they shared time together. Daniel loves mark no matter what what's them to be together bit mark just want to see what happen if he can compete in the Olympics. Every often Daniel takes time of to spend with mark but he is willing to wait. I wanted more to see what happens with them Olympics but it's ok still there is hope for them.
I found this to be a rambling story with no cohesion or character development. The story flashed back and forth between the beginnings of the main character's relationship to the present. I've seen this done before successfully but in this case I was wondering what the point was and why I should care about these two characters.
I liked Mark an Daniel and wanted to like the story as well...but I just didn't. The story was to unfinished. It felt more like a excerpt. That said I would definitely be interested in reading a longer work from this author as both MCs were real to me. Their points of view were interesting and 'real'.
