Dividido em duas partes, este livro começa por tratar o próprio conceito de trágico, comentando-o em textos filosóficos e estéticos escritos por 12 filósofos e poetas, como Schelling, Hölderlin, Hegel, Goethe, Schopenhauer, Kierkegaard e Nietzsche. A segunda parte analisa oito tragédias que representam as quatro grandes épocas da poesia trágica, entre elas - 'Édipo rei' (Sófocles), 'A vida é sonho' (Calderón de la Barca), 'Otelo' (Shakespeare), 'Fedra' (Racine), 'Demetrius' (Schiller) e 'A morte de Danton' (Büchner).
