Peter Szondi was Professor of Comparative Literature at the Free University in Berlin. He is the author of groundbreaking works on the theory of drama, on literary hermeneutics, on Hölderlin, and on Celan.

Ez volt az első színháztudományi szakkönyv, amit olvastam, és nem tagadom: azután, hogy a tanárom úgy adta ide, hogy "kicsit nehéz, kicsit tömör, de jó", fogtam a fejem (hát jó). Minden esetre kíváncsi voltam és nagyon buzgón jegyzetelgettem mert bár ténylegesen tömör volt, de (no offense) talán többet adott annál, mint egy félévnyi tanulás teatrológián. De visszafogom magam, mert nem fényezni akarom e könyvet, se degradálni a szakot (egyáltalán nem is érzek jogot arra, hogy e kettőt szembeállítsam vagy egyazon mérlegre tegyem). Viszont mindenképp ősszefűzte azokat a kis láncszemeket, amiket itt-ott elcsípegettem a félév során és kaptam egy olyan összképet, amiből majszolhatok majd, ha szükségét érzem. Szintén személyes megjegyzés, de (tekintve, hogy mindig is érdekelt a színház elméleti háttere) sikerült egy olyan tudást nyújtania, amit elvárnék egy ennyire elhíresült szakkönyvtől.
Voltak viszont olyan megjegyzések néhol, amelyeket nem értettem - vagy megérteni kívántam inkább, de nem szorítkozott több magyarázatra az író (ld. miért felel meg az orosz ember jelleme Csehov stílusának vagy tökéletesíti ezt az orosz nyelv).
Össz-vissz szerintem elég jó olvasmány, rövid és velős, és bár lehet, olyan számára olvashatatlan, aki most vág neki a pályának, de egyebek mellett el tudja vezetni olvasóját azon az úton, amin hivatott elvezetni.

کتاب خوبیه ولی مثل بقیه ی کتاب های تحلیلی که ترجمه می شن ، نویسنده برای توضیح سر فصل ها از نمونه هایی استفاده کرده که اکثرا به فارسی ترجمه نشدن.

- Zastor ne pada na moderne teorije, tako ni na povijest moderne dramatike. Szondijev pokušaj teoretskog formuliranja ne može se nazvati uspješnim, koliko korisnim. Uspješan je prikaz novih oblika. Ovu knjigu autor je napisao sa samo 25 godina, te je ona kao svojevrsna tema diplomskog rada, stekla neizostavan i kultni status u svijetu istraživanja teorije drame. Izlaganje Petera Szondija pokušaj je da se različiti oblici novije dramatike objasne načinom razrješavanja unutrašnjih antinomija sadržaja i oblika (Hegelov recept za istinska umjetnička djela istovjetnost je sadržaja i oblika; sadržaj je prema Hegelu prometanje oblika u sadržaj, dok je oblik prometanje sadržaja u oblik). Kroz ovu razmjerno kratku i konciznu knjigu, uporište pronalaze (a uporištem i bivaju), uz zadivljujući podlogu filozofskih postavki, bardovi moderne drame poput Ibsena, Čehova, Strindberga, Maeterlincka, Hauptmanna, kao i Piscatora, Brechta, Brucknera, Pirandella, O'Neilla, Wildera, Millera itd.

Originally published in 1965, Peter Szondi's Theory of the Modern Drama has many important points to make about how dramatic writing moved out of the Neoclassical period and into the Modern. Despite his outrageously strict definition of what constitutes a drama and his insistence on regarding artistic choices in terms of correct or incorrect, Szondi clearly has reverence for the great playwrights of the period. His theories about how dialogue changed function from conflict-based to existential, the use of the epic "I" in the voice of the playwright, and description of how the passage of onstage time changed all make for a fascinating addition to a more general knowledge of the period. He is particularly adept in his analysis of Chekhovian and Brechtian conventions and, although his language is uncomfortably dense at times, a close read is worth the effort for those particularly interested in theatre history.

Präzise und auf den punkt: wie sich die subjekt-objekt-dialektitk des klassischen dramas mit ihren gegenseitigen übergängen zum erneuten (epischen) widerspruch zwischen subjekt und objekt wandelte, als autoren wie ibsen, hauptmann oder maeterlinck begannen, die absolutheit des dramas thematisch zu unterminieren, und wie diese krise gelöst werden kann, indem die episierte thematik zum formalen prinzip wird.
ansprechend geschrieben, intelligent durchdacht - eine tolle lektüre mit interessanten randbemerkungen zur dramatik becketts und sartres, die allemal die mühe wert ist.

A difficult read due partly I think to the translation of concepts from German and the language used. Worth persevering, I finally got it in the last chapter of examples. I'm not sure it is a theory, far more of a detailed history of how "drama" has developed over the ages from one person narrative to a stage full of characters with different roles to play in the drama
