In this superb novel composed of fragments of memory, Gilbert Sorrentino captures the unconventional nuances of a conventional world. A masterful collage of events is evocatively chained together by secrets and hidden truths that are almost accidentally revealed. Each episode, affectingly textured with penetrating detail, ferrets out the gristle and unconventional beauty found in the voices of the working-class inhabitants from an irretrievable, golden age Brooklyn.

“Death is not an event in life: we do not live to experience death.” Ludwig WittgensteinTractatus Logico-Philosophicus
In the first chapter Gilbert Sorrentino cites Ludwig Wittgenstein and this quote can be considered as a guideline for the entire novel.
Little Casino consists of short, elaborate, vaguely chained to each other vignettes and at the bottom of every yarn the author places his rather mysterious comments.
Minions and bacchantes, servants of Aphrodite and Dionysus, slaves to the black force of Eros, devotees of earthy, occulted mysteries. They order that which they desire to be done to them by their acolytes, their groveling husbands and lovers and trembling fools. They are pleased to have this power, although they are not aware of its effect on the boy who, though its creator, is obedient before it.

You are an onlooker, you stand still and all the events, personages, streets, scenery, dreams, fantasies are moving all around you… And time flies.

A short spectacular novel that forms part of an unofficial trilogy along with A Strange Commonplace and the posthumous The Abyss of Human Illusion we might label the “retirement” trilogy (GS having previously, and quietly, taught at Stanford until the late nineties). In a series of vignettes, Sorrentino dredges up the ghosts of his Brooklyn past for a typically sardonic, extra-specially perverse cockeyed slant at humanity and its failings. A warm-hearted and sometimes sentimental book, Little Casino is comfy in its artifice, with self-commentaries added to each chapter for further cranky or equally moving comments. Among the more amusing pieces is ‘Epistolary Associates’ where a woman criticises a letter sent by an ex-lover for not jolting her “into taking a fresh view of our relationship . . . your recollection of what we ‘had’ together seems, I’m afraid, rather flat.” The chapter concerning a vicious marital argument ‘The Tomato Episode’ is especially amusing when read by Sorrentino in this interview and podcast from the Lannan Foundation (sadly not filmed). The only video footage available of Sorrentino, seemingly, is him discussing Hubert Selby in the DVD It/ll Be Better Tomorrow.

Heartache, loneliness, the thorough emptiness at the heart of lust, the weird and vague memory-glow induced by classic mid-century American songs, the stupidity of hopeless longing, our shifting pasts and lost chances, booze, broken dreams, desolate marriages, “The bird of time has but a little way to flutter, Ruth, he said”, snow falling in the circles of the streetlamps but everyone just wanting to be someone else, whisky that accents the cheap cigarette smell of her pale blue dress, the women we loved who never loved us, our dear departed, light as if an afternoon bled through honey, he just wants to fuck someone anyone, years’ humid accretions, Christmas trees, let’s not make this a story, “Such contradictions and blithe disruptions are the stuff of poetry”, a bar fight for the hell of it and a broken nose, blood mixing with vomit, blood stained smile under a wrecked table, Aphrodite and Plato and Dionysus, “how high the moon, there is no moon above, when love is far away too”, neat tautologies, a deep royal purple, where he was to go after the war, to bury himself between her breasts, a white cotton strap slipping off a suntanned shoulder, this piano’s out of tune, we still float on summertime lakes of our past, her glorious blush, his fabulous coupe, “they rode off into the night” is a comfortable phrase, “Do you ever wonder if the stars shine out for you? Float down like autumn leaves and hush now”, casino means “little house”, let’s have a Coke, a rondeau on a rondelle, the sharp light of bowling alleys, unanswered letters, “For a little silver quarter we can have the Pullman porter turn the lights down low Ooh!”, that the moon is “silvery” is a cliche, the first steps toward a realm of silence, click!, “Pack up all my care and woe, here I go, singing low, bye bye blackbird”.*

*Many but not all of the preceding may be found in Gil Sorrentino’s Little Casino, which has the same strange haunting resonance of some classic mid-century American songs, which are of course a type of shared memory, and this is, I’m sure, an effect deliberately cultivated and honed by the author, who always has us, the readers, in the foremost of his thoughts, as he has admitted.

This was an exceptional book, although, I must admit it took me a little while to warm up to it. It's made up entirely of very short vignettes, from one or two pages to sometimes a little more, and have almost no connection to each other. They are mostly about little snippets in peoples lives, sometimes significant, sometimes not so much. Sorrentino's writing is magnificent using very descriptive prose and he seems to be drawn, mostly, to subjects that are sexual in content or have something to do with death. Some of the vignettes are shocking, some are lewd, some are vulgar, some are morbid and some are humorous but they are all entertaining. One of the vignettes that stood out most for me was titled "Epistolary Associate" that seemed to be a parody of the book itself. It was written as a letter to someone and then a second letter replying to the first. The second letter was critical of the first saying it was pointless and vulgar and served no purpose which are criticisms that anyone could make against this book if they didn't like it.

This was my first encounter with Gilbert Sorrentino. I'll definitely be reading more of him. This particular novel is sort of a non-linear, fictionalized memoir about growing up in Brooklyn. Sorrentino is best known as an "experimental" writer - a problematic term if ever there was one - and indeed this book is very fragmentary and "post-modern" in its constant subversion of narrative reliability. Each brief chapter is isolated to a single scene or memory which has been altered by obvious confusions of embellishments. Furthermore, each chapter ends with a tongue-in-cheek authorial "commentary" which, while assuming the voice of objectivity, ends up playing with the reader all the more. It's like looking through an album of faded photographs, and then finding that the writing on the back of each photograph is more humorous commentary and misdirection that fact.

I don't usually like self-consciously "pomo" writing, but here the structure is fully grounded in the needs of the tale. Furthermore, Sorrentino's voice - full of
the warmth and the rhythm of spoken word, replete with genuine humanity - cures the potential cerebral coldness that often mars novels with a self-contained, "high concept" structure. Sorrentino actually reminded me, at certain moments, of Harlan Ellison in his more earth-bound modes.

The best casino games for beginners in 2023

Have you always wanted to try your luck at a casino but found that you don't know how to play casino games? Since there are so many games on the market, some may seem complicated to inexperienced casino players. That's why we're bringing you a list of the best casino games for beginners so you can start playing right away. See a full guide here to learn how to sign up to the best live dealer online casino sites available to UK players.

These are some of the best casino games for beginners.

There are many casino and online casino games that you can play, but the ones that may seem easiest for beginners are casino slots, roulette, poker and blackjack.

If you want to know more about them, keep reading.

Key

Casino slots are a popular choice for novice players. And there's a reason for that; They are easy to understand.

Every slot game is different; There are no specific rules for this casino game. Slot machines have multiple paylines based on the game's algorithm. If you get one of these winning lines, your bet will be multiplied by 2x, 5x or even 1000x if you hit the jackpot.

The object of the game is to reach a winning line with your spins. All slot machines pay out when the middle reels land on the same image.

For example, if you are playing a 3-reel slot where the best winning symbol is the number 7, you win the bet if you get three weeks. If you are playing a 5-reel slot, you also win if you get three symbols in a row. However, if you get five symbols of the same type, your winnings will increase exponentially.

Most slots have "wild" features that appear on the reels. If you manage to activate them, your bet will be multiplied countless times.

Roulette

In roulette, one of the oldest betting games from ancient times, players have to bet on numbers from 0 to 36. You can choose to bet on a single number, different groups of numbers, the color of the number, whether the number should be odd or even, or whether the numbers should be high or low.

One of the simplest and safest strategies when playing roulette is to make as many 50/50 bets as possible (even or odd numbers, red or black, high or low number). In reality, though, the odds aren't really 50/50; Due to the green colored number 0 on the wheel, the odds are slightly tilted in favor of the house.

If you bet on this number and the ball lands there, you win 35 times your bet, which can be an impressive amount.

Twenty-one

Blackjack is another popular casino game played by famous players around the world because it is fun and easy to understand.

Dealers deal a face down card to all players participating in a game of blackjack, who then decide how much to bet in that particular round. The goal is to reach a total of 21 points without going over. The winner is the person with the highest number closest to 21 (or 21), player or dealer.

For example, if the player has a total of 18 and the dealer has a total of 22, the person whose card total is 18 wins. Cards 2-9 count according to the number they show. Cards from Jack to King are worth 10 points and Ace is worth 11 or 1.

If someone else has 21 points, the one who managed to draw this number from several cards wins.

video poker

Almost all online casinos today offer the possibility to play video poker. It is one of the best casino games for beginners and players all over the world play it for fun and of course for money.

You must beat all the other players (or the machine) you are playing against to get the winning hand. You can play different types of video poker, but the most common are classic 5-card poker or Texas Hold'em.

To make a bet, you need to have a good deck of cards from the start. However, since poker is a game of luck, you can always bluff and hope the other players fold.

For my money one of the finest examples of late-period Gil's most poetic short form prose workings. It is difficult to quote directly from any of the stories without robbing them of their incantatory power; the commentaries, however, are filled with gems.

"The day his mother died was a day of insanity and hamburgers, or perversions, of good clothes and fur coats and bank accounts, of booze and quiet saloons, of surrogate court and legal forms and leaky ballpoint pens."

***

"At the time of this particular New Year's Eve, disco had not yet been invented. One less thing for white, middle class, suburban heroes of irony to mock."

***

"The trouble with this girl, she says, that is, one of the troubles that I Can see, is. She stops, and takes a sip of her gorgeously blushing cocktail. Is, she says, simply that she is obviously a little tramp."

***

"It is an urban rule of thumb that police hangouts are good places to stay away from, at least while officers of the law are on the premises. This, in spite of the fact that the policeman is our friend."

***

"The beginner, bowling, looks somewhat endearing, but when shooting pool, he appears to be bumblingly incompetent, lost and abandoned and foolish. This proves that pool is a real game."

***

"Soldiers often attempt to seduce women with announcements of their imminent dispatch into the Jaws of Death. It is an old and respected con, wholly understood by both soldiers and women."

***

"That terrible events should occur on sunny, warm, and pleasant days seems a sour irony, and may well account for the quiet madness and despair, the frenzy and sudden violence, that are virtually inseparable from life in California."

***

"'Photographs, because they exclude everything except the split second in which they are snapped, always lie,' he once wrote. Time."

Having grown up in the same three or four square blocks of the same Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, neighborhood that Sorrentino wrote about, I found some of the content interesting despite the author's poor style. Like Carver and Bukowski, Sorrentino understood that, in order to be published and praised by the bourgeoisie, working class people must be presented in fiction as self destructive idiots. Yet he himself was not a idiot but, raised in the same environment he describes as brutal, a much praised and rewarded intellectual. His tarting up his tales of Brooklyn with Post modernist writers tricks didn't solve this basic contradiction.

You might love this book; you might hate this book. I loved it. I thought it was funny as hell with some fantastic lines in it. It's not really like anything I have ever read before, so it is hard to find something to compare it to. The writing reminds me slightly of Raymond Carver, but not really.

2.5.

I'm a big fan of Sorrentino's criticism but I feel as a metafiction writer... I found the interstitial postscripts a little wearying. Add to this a sort of pithy despondency that ultimately left a rough taste.

Bonus points from the Gamdom Casino Australia test

Whether you can look forward to special offers or other great features, I have determined in my Gamdom Casino experience. The provider has never won any special awards, but there are still plenty of extras. Get ready for a wide range of promotions, cashbacks and great bonuses every single day of the week.

If you want to claim a promotion, you simply have to enter the bonus code at the deposit window. However, my experience at Gamdom Casino has shown that there are very high turnover requirements. I recommend you to take a look at our separate review to learn more about the best casino bonus promotions.

The range of Gamdom Casino games in numbers

The range of casino games represents an essential aspect to review in my Gamdom Casino experience. I found out that over 2,000 slot games at https://gamdomcasino.net/ are available. In addition, great jackpot and Megaways slots are waiting for you. Scratch cards, Asian style games and sports games are also offered.

Popular table games like blackjack or poker can only be accessed through the search line. The games available are among the best on the gambling market. I was pleasantly surprised about the selection of casino poker games. By the way, the entire range of over 3,000 games is extended by the offer of games from the live area.

On the whole, players are offered an interesting variation of casino games. Even new releases and games with bonus purchase functions can be found in this Internet gaming store. In my Gamdom Casino test, I discovered that over 50 providers, including Betsoft and Yggdrasil provide a top selection of games.

The games in the Gamdom Casino live area

By the way, I was able to find out more about the live casino thanks to my Gamdom Casino experience. You will find a large selection of the top providers here, such as Pragmatic Play, Evolution or Ezugi. You can look forward to the popular Lightning Roulette, which can be played with high resolution in HD quality. You will also be offered many Live Blackjack titles.

In the test of Gamdom Casino, the live game shows particularly caught my eye. Titles like Gonzo's Treasure Hunt, Football Studio and Dream Catcher are waiting for you here. You can choose between the card and dice games Baccarat, Sic Bo and Craps as well as 8 live poker games. Gamdom Casino can keep up with the providers of the top live dealer casinos.

The mobile app of Gamdom Casino

Wouldn't it be great to be able to access your favorite casino anytime, anywhere? With the mobile app from Gamdom Casino, this is possible. I have already tested many applications and presented the test winners of the mobile apps in a special report. My Gamdom Casino experience has shown that you do not have to do without the welcome bonus here.

I could not find any weak points in the app. It adapts perfectly to the screen size on any device. The Gamdom Casino app is available for iOS and Android operating systems. The good thing is that it does not take up any storage space, as it can be easily opened in the browser of your choice.

Gamdom

Gamdom Casino Conclusion: A great variation of games

After I was able to gather numerous and comprehensive experiences about Gamdom Casino, I can now express my general impression of the provider. The provider has already been on the market since 2010 and has been able to further expand and improve the profile of games, bets and promotions since then. The professional customer service makes you feel very well taken care of.

The range of games and sports betting as well as the large live casino blew me away. The high payout ratios of the games, the mobile app and the selection of well-known payment methods left a very good impression. My evaluation of Gamdom Casino, which is also a betting provider, is therefore very good and I can highly recommend registering.

Sorrentino is one of those "author's authors" and I'm always interested in knowing what other writers are impressed / influenced by (the same way I tend to pick up records by artists whose music is covered and/or cited by my favorite musicians). It has been a while, but I remember this being simultaneously raw and polished, almost a memoir-like feel for seedy detail rendered with a stonecarver's patience.

My memories of this particular book are a little, shall we say, "impressionistic" - perhaps that's because I read it in a vicodin-and-antibiotic haze in the wake of a broken rib/sinus infection combo during an extended Christmas visit to Birmingham, Alabama with my then soon-to-be-ex-in-laws. Sigh.

Postmodern fun from Sorrentino in 2002. Talks about memory, desire and the writing process. Winks at the audience a lot. Does things like use a narrative device, then comments on it, then comments on his comment. Which also doesn't impact on the fact the device does its job. Felt there was a comic piece or two which broke the spell though.
