Norihiro Yagi (八木教広 Yagi Norihiro) is a Japanese manga writer and artist from Okinawa Prefecture. He started making manga in 1990.
Norihiro Yagi is a successful manga artist, having won the 32nd Akatsuka Award for his very first work, Undeadman. Undeadman appeared in Monthly Shōnen Jump and has had two sequels. Yagi's first serialized manga was his comedy-genre Angel Densetsu, which appeared in Monthly Shōnen Jump from 1992 to 2000. His most recent work, Claymore, has been running in the magazine since 2001.
This was so much better than I expected! I was a little put off by the art style but the synopsis was intriguing, and as I kept reading the art got a lot better anyway.
This is a comedy that follows a schoolboy called Kitano, whose looks are so scary that people either run from him or attack him in fear. But somehow he lives in blissful ignorance and actually has an incredibly sweet and mild nature. The situations he unintentionally gets himself into are amazing and his weird running pose made me laugh pretty much every time I saw it.
It's also nice to see how the side characters progress from attacking him or fearing him as they become valued friends and learn from his kind (but oblivious) nature. They're strong personalities in their own right and the author really knows how to write badass female characters - so it was no surprise when I read the synopsis for his other work, Claymore.
And for once having an oblivious MC isn't annoying :)
Every time I think I see how the misunderstanding can occur, author surprises me by going an almost more ridiculous and ludicrous route! In a good way!
I love Seiichiro so much. He is such an endearing character. You truly can’t help but want him to win and make more friends. The side characters are such a treat too. All gave their own gripes and comedic flow. So well done.
Is the art the best, no, but I love the art. It has heART *badum bass* (I’ll see myself out), but in all fairness, I think it’s the unpolished nature of the art that makes the comedy work so well. When you see Seiichiro try to interact with others and the expressions of the reactions of those around him. It kills me ever. Single. Time. I kid you not. I pause to properly guffaw. I guffawed so hard I had tears in my eyes and people around me asking if I were alright.
Definitely continuing. Really enjoying this manga in its entirety. No volume has been a let down so far. The art has been improving and the story beats and plot points keep steadily climbing.
Angel Densetsu might be my favorite manga of all time and I love it so much. I'm so glad I read it all again.
Yagi-san! Please write a "ten years later" epilogue, and maybe show how Kitano looks as an old man too, because he would be such an evil-looking grandpa. I beg of you. It would be so funny! And I want to know how everything turns out.
Hilarious! Simply hilarious. I can't stop chuckling all through the reading. The graphic is just so-so, but the stories & characters are more than enough to keep me reading this funny creation. More than that, this manga has a deep message, that looks can be very deceptive indeed.
The manga centers around Kitano Seiichiro, a boy with a pure and kind heart but has a scary face. The plot is basically a running gag of how people always assume Katino is a delinquent and a drug addict (sometimes even the devil incarnation). But that’s not the case all the time. Despite attracting delinquents from other schools and even becoming the ‘banchou’ (gang leader) of his own school, Kitano manages to attract friends and a lover who see him for who he truly is: a kind yet socially awkward boy. What I personally loved about the manga is that it doesn’t get repetitive. It’s what I was afraid of when I first decided to read it. I wouldn’t even call it a comedy since Kitano’s cheerful personality despite taken for a delinquent affects everyone he meets, which makes for great character developments. So much love is felt in the story. The artstyle is simple and a bit rough at the beginning but it gets better in the later volumes.
I had an amazing time reading this manga. I laughed harder than I could imagine, especially in the first few chapters. I loved how the story developed; every character had a moment to shine. Its ending was also very beautifully wrapped.
Uno de los mejores mangas que he leído jamás, con una historia divertida y una lección para toda la vida: "No hay que juzgar un libro por su portada", pero aplicada al protagonista de esta tremenda historia.
